What did you have for Christmas dinner?
by GrreatTeacher inmy inlaws are polish, though my husband is a 3rd generation american, but the food traditions have stuck around.. we have christmas eve dinner starting with red beet soup with sour cream, pierogies filled with mashed potatoes or saurkraut, ham, polish sausage sliced and cooked with saurkraut, turkey (that part is american), krischickies (likely spelled wrong) which are crispy pastries dipped in powdered sugar, and apple pie (also american.).
there are goodnatured threats toward bad children who may need to get their dupa busted (butt spanked) and therefore santa will bring figismachen.
i also love golabkis (ground beef and rice wrapped in cabbage leaves), but these were not served this time.

We are going non traditional this year, barbeque tri tip (sirloin), marinated and cooked in a Komodo style grill, garlic French bread, barbeque beans and Sunshine salad (oranges, red and orange bell peppers, avocado, red onions, candied walnuts) with a Tiramisu Buche Noel (Yule log). -

Today is Christmas, and guess what? Witnesses's were going house to house on my block, TODAY ON CHRISTMAS!!!!!!
by Dunedain ini kid you not!!!!!
my family, and i, were on our way to my wife's brothers house today, which is the families christmas tradition.
we open presents in the morning, and at around 10:30, we head over to my brother in laws for breakfast/brunch, with all the family.. so, as we loaded some presents up in the car, and we all jumped, and drove away, at the end of my block, jehovahs witnesses!

Its beyond obnoxious, especially given how they condemn people for celebrating Christmas. People are busy with family, preparing food, eating and opening gifts, and here comes Debbie Downer telling them they are wrong to do it. I think I might have done it once when I was a new convert, but it didn't feel right and I never did again.

American accents, Bette Midler, Clinton, Rick Fearon, Strathclyde, Morningside
by slimboyfat ini used to enjoy being able to distinguish different local accents, but for some reason i've got worse at it.
i was thinking about this today when i was listening to bette midler on the scottish radio.
i thought to myself i quite liked her accent and also that it reminded me of someone else.

Americans are somewhat losing their regional accents, too many people move around and also due to the influence of television. My parents were from Texas, but they moved to California and consciously got rid of their accents, Texans were looked down upon at that time (late forties), but I could still pick it up from a few things my dad said, likes hep instead of help. A Texas twang is similar to southern, but not exactly. In Texas when you walk into a store the clerk will always say "how ya'all doing?", it's very cute. I am a California girl, so no accent.
If you want to hear a distinctive American accent, watch the movie Fargo. They got a North Dakota/minnesota accent down. Not as distinct as a southern accent, it's as much the words they use as the way they say it don't-ya-know.

Where the real abuse lies.
by ctrwtf inlet me start with a disclaimer: i am in no way minimizing the horrific crimes done to children by pedophiles.
i'm not downplaying the number of lives lost due to the blood issue, or hearts broken because of shunning.
i do not want to discount the feelings of those who have come to the end of their lives with expectations of paradise postponed.. but to me the biggest atrocity committed by this awful cult is raising children from a small age to believe that soon god will kill billions of people.

I agree this is a horrible thing. It's not unlike the people who stood idly by while the the Germans killed the Jews. The mental toll it takes to make yourself OK with the idea of the gruesome deaths of billions of people is no small thing.

Beards galore at the Assembly
by Truthexplorer inok, at our recent assembly, i noticed that there were quite a lot of brothers wearing beards.
not just the older dudes, but right across a range of ages, young men, middle aged men and older men.
is watchtower beginning to relax this rule at last?

Since Jesus and the apostles wore beards they would have a hard time proving they are unscriptual. At one time they may have been a sign of rebellion, but that time has passed, beards are widely accepted in society, so what is the reason for banning them? Obviously they are going to have a hard time maintaining the ban, I suspect they will start allowing them even for elders in the next few years. -

Lme explain something to you. Um, I am not “Mr. Lebowski”. You’re Mr. Lebowski. I’m the Dude. So that’s what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.

Does Jehovah Intervene - JW Teaching
by thedepressedsoul ini have been a jw my whole life and i have never been able to get a clear answer on this question.
jw's do not believe that jehovah will intervene if someone is sick, dying or stopping a car crash.
they feel that jehovah is letting "this world" play out before he solves all of these problems.

I can understand not feeling excited by a holiday you never were a part of. There is nothing wrong with that, but there is something to be said for making something special out of one day a year. It's a way to mark the passage of a year, to connect with loved ones, to slow down, to do something a little different. Things become special because you make them so, so create your own holiday traditions. It doesn't have to be anything everyone else does. It could be going to the movies, or having friends over for chili. We find ourselves without family around this year, so my husband invited some people over for a tri-tip bar-b-que. Not very traditional, but who cares, he didn't feel like ham or turkey.
I made a late minute decision to send cards this year, as I do paper crafting I even made them all by hand. As I was addressing them I realised that if I hadn't done this I don't know when I would have contacted some of my family, the date pushed me to make that connection, I was glad I did. I hate malls too, so I don't go there. I buy gifts throughout the year, stash them away and hopefully don't forget where they are, lol.

Hope and Reality
by Alive! infor a long time, i've been moving into a place of utmost hope and faith.
universal reconciliation.
as a converted jw - i began my conversion with the joy that there is a hope for something we all would love - a world where each of us sees our fellow kind as a true brother.. i don't think that's an unhealthy way to live.. but - i'm living with the effects of corruptive thinking from a 'sect' - a divisive sect and judgemental sect that has hurt my sense of self.. it's terribly painful to have completely believed one thing, and then completely believe something else.... well that's how it feels to me.. i've read of some here who were jws for years, then became devout born agains for years and now are confirmed atheists.. wow.. how do you cope with the frivolous nature of your 'beliefs' - beliefs that were 'truths' for you in their own time.. i'm struggling - anyone else?.

The realisation that the Watchtower was not the truth caused me to reexamine everything I once believed, that examination proved to me beyond doubt that God didn't exist. It was hard at first, I felt a loss, a belief system that made me belief the bad in the world would be fixed. But as time went by it got better and I could never go back to believing something just because it makes me feel better, or because the real truth is unpalatable. I would rather have reality.
