When I stepped down in 1995, elders were encouraged not to step down, but to remain elders but not hold any positions such as presiding overseer, secretary, etc. They really didn't want elders to step down. Few that do ever "step up" again.

Help needed Re: Elders stepping "aside"
by Pathofthorns ini have a vague recollection of elders who voluntarily took a break from their positions due to health matters or to take care of family situations.. in some of these cases it was possible for them to have some sort of understanding with the congregation that they would still be respected as elders but without the title and less assignments.. i realize this subject is somewhat stupid, but i have my reasons for asking and if anyone has sound information regarding situations where an elder can take advantage of something like this and how one would go about it, it would be appreciated.. path

Check this out:
http://www.swissbankclaims.com/PDFs_Eng/WatchTowerBible.pdf
Basically they are trying to gain a portion of the Swiss Banks Settlement for their "Holocaust education" work.
These two paragraphs really struck me though:
"The few remaining Witness survivors have used their waning vitality to speak to young people, educators, and scholars about their experiences and those of their martyred fellow believers. If the court sees fit to allocate a portion of the settlement fund to the Watch Tower to continue this work of remembrance, we believe it would constitute fitting recognition of individual Witnesses who suffered and died while maintaining their faith and human values.
Some Witnesses died prematurely and left no heirs to make a claim to the Swiss Bank Settlement Fund. However, the legacy of spiritual resistance that they left behind is of great value in the education of future generations about the importance of standing up for the dignity and value of human life. Representing these individuals, the Watch Tower would be pleased devote any allocated moneys solely to the interests of Holocaust education and the remembrance of the prisoners who bore the purple triangle, according as the court might stipulate."
In the first paragraph, it would seem to me to preempt any individual JWs who might otherwise apply for a portion of the settlement. And in the second, they are attempting to set themselves up as the heirs of those who died and left no heirs. What arroagance!

There was also the version they told Hitler in their letter that accompanied the "Declaration of Facts" that they sent him in 1933:
"The Brooklyn headquarter of the Watchtower Society is pro German in an exemplary way and has been so for many years. For that reason, in 1918, the president of the Society and seven members of the board of directors were sentenced to 80 years in prison, because the president refused to use two of the magazines published in America under his direction for war propaganda against Germany. These two magazines, 'The Watchtower' and 'Bible Student' were the only magazines in America which refused to engage in anti-German propaganda and for that reason were prohibited and suppressed in America during the war."

Fred Gott's brother is Bob. He was at Bethel for years. I met him when he came to visit friend. He was later dismissed from Bethel. There is an article written by Bob and Fred's mother Tarrissa in the 6/1/87 WT.
