Yes, the Bible Students (not JW's yet) were told not that 1914 was the beginning of some long end-time, but rather that it was the end. And barring some last-minute "new light" that it was to be the start of Armageddon or a great tribulation, they expected the world war to develop into the great war of Satan vs. Jehovah.

The End of World War 1 was Exactly 100 Years Ago
by ILoveTTATT2 init is so amazing that the end of wwi was signed exactly 100 years ago!
and in just a few more hours, at 11:00am on 11 november 2018, paris time, the combat actually stopped!
(the war wasn´t officially over until 1919).it is such a historic moment, for the entire world, but also for jw´s, and for exjw´s.for almost the entire length of the war, the witnesses thought that the war was the prelude to armageddon.

Why is the watchtower tight fisted
by pepperheart inwhy when i can get many books and magazines sent through the post from many other cults does the watchtower make a big fuss about a little 16 page magazine.
-
OnTheWayOut
Watchtower was accustomed to making money from most literature placements, so the thought of free mail-outs is just too much for them.
They are probably right in that mail-outs won't lead to much money.

The Biggest Issue Is Not Guns—It Is Mental Health!
by minimus incrazy people shoot up places and kill people.
take away guns and they will find knives, poison, bombs , etc.. seriously, there are a lot of mentally unhealthy people!
they need professional long term help..

I could go on a tangent about funding mental health issues.
But on the subject at hand, you have been provided some great answers.
Guns are easy to obtain in the USA and easy to go on a rampage with. Multiple victims with a knife-wielding assailant are rare because 1) it's hard to do and 2) the person will probably be stopped before it becomes multiple victims.
I am not against reasonable gun ownership for people who are capable responsible people. Screen them. Tax their license like they tax our gasoline or my kayak use on Illinois waters and use the money to provide them with mandatory training. And set reasonable limits on what people can own. Otherwise, why can't I drive a tank with a cannon and carry a grenade launcher? -

Keeping Track Of The Brothers During The Great Tribulation
by new boy ini couldn’t help but watch the “bunker video “again.
i learned that once they are in the bunkers they will need to get the attendance numbers from the different groups that are in hiding during the “great tribulation.” chris and wife risked their lives going to the different groups and getting the numbers and putting them on slip of paper which he then handed to brother brown.
of course these numbers would have to be kept track of so they could make a full report back to the headquarters.

The bunker video is all nonsense as they never expect such a time to actually arrive but to remain "just around the corner."
And if it did arrive, yes- they would be paranoid about the ones not at their meeting last week going over to the dark side. They would forget that Jehovah is supposed to protect them and take it upon themselves to keep their secret handshake and/or bunker location away from "Kevin."
Imagine if they could "count their time" visiting faithful JW's in the nursing home, and could not "count their time" standing in front of a cart. That faithful elderly JW woman would be visited all day every day. -

Why don't JWs have problems with board games involving dice?
by cognisonance inso i don't really care about these things anymore, but i was reading this article (and it's a very good one): gamified life.. in the article it mentions (without references):.
dice-based games of chance are thought to have originated with ancient divination practices involving thrown knucklebones.. .
so it's okay to play yahtzee but not okay to go trick-or-treat.
-

Watchtower "demonized" things that encouraged interaction with outsiders. Birthday cake at school or the office led to normalized relations with worldly people. (Certainly, trick-or-treating did that, and Halloween is clearly an easy target to demonize.)
Board games would most likely bring JW kids and family together. No need to poison the idea.

What Are The Differences Between JWs Born In and Converted?
by minimus ini tend to think that many jws who joined the religion in their later years feel foolish or are embarrassed by their decision to become one of jehovah’s witnesses.
.
i’m not embarrassed by my years “in the truth “ because i was raised from infancy to believe everything was god’s word and who are we to question jehovah and his organization?

I tend to think that many JWs who joined the religion in their later years feel foolish or are embarrassed by their decision to become one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Well, yeah. I was exposed to it, stayed clear of it, then let it fully into my young adult life willingly.
But I figured it all out through therapy.

didn't see a post about it yet.
will you be tuning in?

I greatly appreciate the exposure. Having been a JW, I can say that we believed some ultra-wacky stuff too.
On the lighter side, if this causes any arguments about Lloyd, he will be the first to say in his non-apology that although he said nothing wrong, he is sorry that people are upset because of their own shortcomings. -

When I click on the video, and any of John Cedars' videos, it says "This video requires payment to watch."
So forget about it.
Editing to add:
Oh, now it's working. Not a Cedars video. Well, okay. -

The impossible FLOOD
Chronology vs. archaeology
The whole idea of live sacrifice
Silly rules about food and land and boiling baby goatsBut mostly, God choosing a certain group of people to have insider information, deciding not to interfere with people figuring out they need to choose proper worship, but interfering all the time like at Babel, the flood, various battles.

What will JJ Abrams and Disney do for Star Wars episode IX?
by LoveUniHateExams ini heard that jj abrams has finished the screenplay and they'll be starting to shoot the final episode soon.. so where will the story go?.
han solo is dead, snoke is dead, leia can only have a very limited role at best because carrie fisher unfortunately died .... plus, rey has already defeated the main villain once before, in her first lightsaber fight (in the force awakens, because 'ovaries!
', i guess xd).. and she saved his ass against snoke's elite guards (in the last jedi) - so it will be difficult to film any kind of dramatic tension between rey and kylo ren.. i won't be seeing this film in the cinema or buying it on dvd but i am kinda curious how things will pan out .... what do you think?.

Before most of you-all's time, but when an entire season of the television show DALLAS was made into a dream so that a dead character could be brought back on, I cease to wonder where continual series scripts can take you.
In Star Wars movies, a character is not gone just because he is dead.
In Star Wars movies, a previously cut scene can be put back in and a live actor can be covered over with Jabba the Hut, so the point is that much footage exists, much technology exists to change it or make it different.
I suspect it will be similar to scripts of the past where there is a new super weapon that all good guys must overcome. Maybe Kylo Ren will die but turn away from the dark side.
Chewbacca is very much alive, so maybe Lando and Chewbacca will save the day....or maybe the droids will have a bigger role in it all. R2D2 will turn out to the new leader of freedom.
Who cares? It is fun to speculate, but in the end, it's a movie that many over-involved fans will get upset about.
