Quality Thinking - Warning: Long Post Ahead

recently, several threads have had some debate about logic, evidence, critical thinking and skepticism.

i wanted to write a post discussing those things, hopefully to clarify what those things are, why they are important and how to use those tools.

first, logic, at its core, is simply a method for how to reason validly, how to draw conclusions based on a premise.

That is so true. I have heard witnesses tell me about their experience learning to be witnesses. One witness told me that he said to his study conductor "If you can show it to me in the bible I'll believe it." When you start off with reasoning like that your goose is cooked. His conclusion was already formed. The bible is the truth. He was very appreciative of the witnesses setting him straight on what the bible says.

Critical thinking is important and as a part of critical thinking it's important to realize when your conclusions about something are wrong. Sometimes that's the most difficult thing for any of us to do. Proving someone wrong on something sometimes leads to all sorts of new discoveries.

Well said. I wonder what it is in the JW mind that attracts them to conspiracy theories? To believe all the nonsense that you have to believe to be a witness is really astounding when you sit back and think about it. For some it's just a stage but for others like my parents who beat it to death it still astounds me. Ignorance of anything should be just a stage in ones life when I stop learning it will be because I'm dead.

In fairness to Rebel I think his/her post has elicited some interesting responses and it was a nice break from reading about the Australian Royal Commission. Maybe that was the intent of the OP. I for one believe that man landed on the moon. Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question but there are lots of stupid sources that provide answers those same questions.

I know as one gets older you forget about being recognized for your achievements and one of your biggest achievements was escaping the belief system of that cult. There is nothing wrong with asking questions and there is no such thing a stupid question.

Sorry Rebel I couldn't resist. Do you have a University near you? If so email their science department and ask about your concerns I am sure they can find someone to address your concerns. They actually love questions from John Q Public.

i actually started clapping at that point, as his honour explained to the wt type creep sycophantic slithery lawyer that........" i understand that we all have issues to face in life and .....that is a part of life...........however it has become obvious that this man ....is in such a position to assist with this investigation.....".

it boils down to the fact that stewart outright accused the latest witness of misleading the royal commission and this lead to some document searches which led his honour to conclude that they had been protecting mr jackson.

this was a warm and fluffy moment folks.................brilliant stuff!!!!!

I think if he is forced to testify he'll fake a heart attack or some other ailment that will require a long term rehabilitation and then he can claim the I don't recall defense.

i am inclined to feel that this classifies the views of a large percentage of atheists.

"atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities.

What will this mean to the future of the Internet?

i read articles like this and wonder what effect it will have on the future of the internet.

will the internet stay as free as it is now or will it lessen?.

i am sure there are many on this site who have a greater knowledge of the implications of this than i do so is this anything we need to worry about?
