Large flows of immigrants from various poorer war torn regions is to be expected from time to time in the 21'st century. World overpopulation and all the crisis that humanity faces is nothing like the gloom and doom prophesied by end times Armageddon spewing cults like the witnesses. If you get a chance listen to what a real scientist and statistician has to say. One that makes a compelling case is Prof Hans Rosling.

Largest amount of refugees since WW2 in Europe
by Powermetal4ever inso i had a discussion with my mother about this, and she claims that because of this that: "we are surely living in the last days right now" while i must admit myself that the situation seem chaotic, i don't want to believe that it is the last days.
so question is, how do i face an opinion like that?

A Judicial experience.
by John Aquila inwhen i was an elder in the 80s, a 16 year old baptized jw girl had confessed that at school during lunch a boy kissed her and touched her privates over her dress.
the circuit overseer was in town and we told him of the situation and he called the society and then told us that mother said we were not allowed to conduct the funeral in the kingdom hall or anywhere else with the threat of removing us and being dealt with judicially if we disobeyed.
the mother who is about 79 years old comes once a year to talk to my mom about the situation.

John AquilaThen on my last day I would feel that I accomplish something good in this life. Instead all I can say is “I was a Jehovah Witness for 40 of my best years.”
It's a sad legacy indeed but at least you're aware of it now. To borrow a colloquialism from Christendom that's your cross to bear. Many of the ignorant or lucky ones depending on ones perspective never see the harm caused by this cult.
As long as there is breath in your body there is still time to change and do good. Stay positive.

Secret Slave Class: I don't watch the news. They all have an agenda.
I know the feeling I agree they do all seem to have an agenda.
I am just the opposite in my consumption of the news. I listen to and watch some of the conservative news I also listen to and watch some of the more progressive news media sources. It's true they all have an agenda but I have a little fun trying to figure out what they are reporting and why.
The news media that is the most difficult for me to wrap my head around is the financial news media. If they report that its daylight out and your watch tells you its lunch time you still should check two or three other sources before eating. LOL

WHEN people leave a cult...MAN landed on the moon? Or critical thinking......
by The Rebel ini believe anyone who has voluntarily left a cult has shown they can adapt to new solutions, and have used " critical thinking" skills otherwise most would not have left.. yet i believe a safe place for support is still needed and this safe place i believe is searched for.. now i may not measure up to much in ways of education, but for me personally " critical thinking skills" = " new" a " new" way of thinking, that takes time for me the individual to be visual and to contemplate.
and the more i read about " critical thinking," the more convinced i am that i can live with the ridicule of those that claim i do not possess it.
furthermore i would say those that criticise others " critical thinking skills," often luck the sensibility and thoughts to snore, spit, and fart....nor would they understand a room full of tobacco smoke and cheap booze...where " critical thinking " can often be found in its most profound, in the most sensitive poems and "pictures" that were ever drawn.

Orphan Crow: Leaving the cult is often an emotional choice and has little to do with the concept of critical thinking.
Critical thinking skills do not (and should not) require an emotional involvement.
I couldn't agree more, the farther one can remove emotion from thinking the more critical the thought process becomes.
Vivianne makes a good point also about not being offended by criticisms of ones lack of critical thinking.
As humans we are all prone to occasional emotions and pride affecting our thought processes.

If God exists ....
by iconoclastic inif god exists, he must be a god of freedom.
because he has endowed us with free-will, and never interferes with it (as confirmed by our own experiences).
that means he wants everyone to make their choice and reap the fruits accordingly.

Caleb I have read many of your posts on Judaism and its beliefs. I have a new understanding of them because of you.
These days I am probably the last one to embrace any religion but it's nice to know what your dealing with when I meet one. Thank You

Why Me?
by John Aquila indo you ever wonder why out of all the witnesses, you are the one that woke up?
i wonder many times why me.
i know many men and women that are much, much better persons than me; either they are much smarter, more humble, kinder, more successful, or just better persons all around.

I too have thought about (why me?) many times and I don't think it has anything to do with intelligence I think its as simple as being a follower. Many follow because it gives them a sense of comfort some follow out of fear some follow to achieve a sense of notoriety they wouldn't otherwise have. For me it was just a desire to know whats really going on in the world around us.
The objective of what really going on at least for me is its own reward, sort of like a Fermat's last theorem kind a thing. I'd like to elaborate more on this but I can't today because of the constraints of time and the words in this post just won't suffice lol .
It occurred to me the other day that even if I wanted to go back to "the truth" and get reinstated I'd have to sit down throw my hands up and learn what the witness teachings are today before I could agree or disagree with them as far as they are concerned. The overlapping generation thing would be the biggest change. For an organization and individual members that swallow this kind of new light all the time its clear to me that they are not averse to changing their minds about things as long as the GB says its ok to do so. They are followers and their peaceful existence is their reward.
My reward is just being able to figure something out and be content in doing so. It's doesn't sound like much but it's all just a matter of perspective. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" truer words have never been said.
