Internet was indispensable to me in finally being able to break the hold this cult had on me. -

Raised in
Baptized in 1967
Finally left completely in 2005. I was disfellowshipped previously from 1975 - 1983, but ended up coming back. Was never comfortable with coming back and hated the religion even when I was trying to practice it.

Rich, I am so sorry to hear about Josh. I would never have thought he would do this, but as we both know he had many problems in life from a young age. Distracted said he had a family member who took their own life and then left signs afterward that they were okay. We experienced that same thing with Ryan and hopefully you will with Josh, too. My heart goes out to you. If you need to talk or I can help in any way, I am still in the phone book. My deepest sympathy to your whole family. -

Caleb and Sofia used to brainwash children
by shattered_origins inokay, i need to vent.
as a newly awoken individual, i have yet to "come out" to my hard core jdub parents.
my plan was to lay low and use my unbelieving husband and baby as an excuse for my "inactivity", it has worked for the last few months.

Don't make any excuses; i.e. marital problems, etc. Just tell her flat out that you and your husband do not want your child exposed to these videos, that they are manipulative and use mind control techniques. Make it clear that She will not have unsupervised visits if she tries to indoctrinate your child. Then I would follow through and begin supervised visits only because I guarantee she will not respect your wishes in this matter. -

Did Ray Franz manage to live out a comfortable retirement from the proceeds of his books.
by joe134cd ini'm just curious if anybody knows.
firstly i don't take issue with the man making money from his books and if he was able to live comfortably from it then i say power to him.
but what i'm wanting to know was just how successful was it and did it allow him to live out the remainder of his years in comfort e.g buy a house, eat good food etc.

I thought that he and his wife depended on the help of an ex-JW who had a business and had done well for himself throughout the rest of their life. Being a part of and working for the Watchtower Society does not prepare one to support themselves after all. -

Good for you! I was trying to be low key and continue to go for the sake of my elderly mother and other family who are in, but I reached a point where I just couldn't take it any more and just stopped. I have to say it was the best decision I ever made too. -

My deepest sympathy in the loss of your mother. I hope that elder leaves you alone. It's enough you have to grieve without dealing with that. -

I have not read all the posts on this as I don't have time right now, but I wanted to add my 2 cents about what a wonderful letter you have written. Very well-spoken and puts the case so clearly. I am keeping a copy of it for future reference. -

It's not the same religion anymore.
by punkofnice inthat was a quote from a dyed in the wool jw recently.
it was a complaint.. we all know that with 'new light(tm)' that the watchtower corporation's version of 'religion' has kept changing for a long time.
since i remember.....and i go back a long way too.

I was born in 1952. My mother was studying with the witnesses then and it was not long before she was a staunch believer. I can say the Watchtower Society has changed immensely in all these years. When I was a child there was not the money grabbing that has been going on for decades now. There was a real sense of urgency in doing the preaching work. And when you went out in service, you did not take breaks. I can remember being so hungry by the time we got done and went home. The Kingdom Ministry, which I believe was called something like "Kingdom Service" back then, each month listed peaks of publishers in different countries and we were all so proud to see increases everywhere, but of course at that time it was not nearly in the numbers seen in later years. Their teachings were all wrong of course, but it seems to me there was a more defined sense of it - not all the waffling we have seen in later years (this is wrong - you can't do it; new light - now you can do it, etc.). It was very rigid, of course.
My observation is that as we have become more technologically advanced and information and communication have become readily available, they have had to make changes to stay in existence. And they have had to reduce meetings, etc. to let up on time restrictions on people in today's world. And the money hunger - just amazes me how people can follow along when they are constantly being fleeced. It just shows how deeply they are deceived.
In looking at the evolution over the years, I can clearly see the progression of corruption. This is a religious organization that just sickens me, but truthfully I have not a lot of respect for any religion.

"Why did Jehovah give us needs?" - An example of JW thinking...
by Goldenash inso i had a conversation with my brother some time ago.
i don't entirely remember how, exactly, but the following subject came up:.
"i wonder why god gave his earthly creatures needs... you know, like how we need water to drink, food to eat, air to breath, etc.

A prime example of J-dub think. Reminds me of the time my brother told me that the fact there were more and more animals in urban areas was a phenomenon because Jehovah was calling them to the great day of the feast of Jehovah when they would eat the dead at Armageddon. Oh, really? I thought it was because urban sprawl was invading their natural habitat.
