Thanks everyone who was kind enough to post. I started Cider House Rules last night. I didn't quite make it to chapter two, but I did get about forty pages into it and now I'm remembering why A Prayer for Owen Meany is on my all-time favorite list. John Irving is simply a fun writer. He breathes life into anything he writes about and has such an amazing knack with character depth.

I hate it when you don't push enter but your post shows up three times unfinished. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
LOL! Yeah, that's frustrating. Well, I'm going to go with the crowd. Cider House Rules it is. But I got votes for The Onion Girl and A Widow for One Year too, so I'll probably read those next. Night everyone!

Where the Heart Is is one of my favorite movies. It spoke to me on so many levels: abuse with the ability to forgive and move on, a creative person chasing her dreams, finding a mentor in an unlikely spot, the compassion, the honesty, the undying love that he had for his Nobily. Mmmmm, what a wonderful movie. But, I don't have it or Fried Green Tomatoes. So, I need to choose one from the list. At this point, if I follow the advice of the audience, I'm going to be reading Cider House Rules.

Just thought you should know...demunz...Everybody run!!
by RisingEagle ini was sitting with my to-the-death jw mom eating dinner tonight while watching the show 'dateline' on nbc.
it was an innocuous little program on happiness.
the narrator for the story got about 30 seconds into his presentation and mentioned something about the part of the brain that controls our happiness.

That's what happens when someone is not capable of admitting they are wrong. They have to come up with some way to discredit anything that suggests that things aren't how they portray them to be. Kind of sad, but I guess we were all there, or most of us were there at one time.

As a Witness I Hated Personal Study- How About You ?
by flipper ini started a serious thread on cult mind control- so i figured i'd start a sarcastic funny thread, or serious, your choice how to explore it , on personal study !
i got so sick and tired as a witness with that expression being crammed down my throat !
" personal study " they told us !

Actually, I'm with Stilla on this one. I've always loved learning, regardless of the topic. Plus I was one of those loons mentioned in another thread who enjoys taking notes. To bring my nerdiness to an even higher level in y'alls estimation, I enjoy reading technical manuals. I read them both as a reference, looking up which part currently applies to what I'm doing, and from cover to cover.

Happiness and the minds of JW's
by megaflower inif god is termed "the happy god" and he truly wants people to be happy, even in the present sense, then why are so many witnesses unhappy, miserable deep down inside, popping who knows what kind of prescription pills, and even driven to the point of suicide?
can witnesses ever truly measure up?
we've been told: "the new system will take care of everything"; "don't get an education in the world"; "don't save for retirement".

well, of the books you listed, my suggestion would be borrow the next Harry Potter from someone and read it!
You know what I'm probably going to do. I'm probably (read definitely) going to go to the used book store tomorrow and see if I can snag it for cheap. The first two books were soooooooooooooo amazingly well written that I'm sure not wanting to deviate from that series yet.
