Have we become like those we despise?
by boyzone inak jeff and i have just had a small disagreement on the charlton heston thread.
nothing important or serious, but it just struck me that in our exchanges he and brentr have used a couple of lines of false argumentation to get their point across.. i can't help but think its strange that with all our moaning about the watchtower and its false argumentation methods, are we prepared to use exactly the same methods when our views are challenged?.
i find this a bit disconcerting, especially on here of all places.

What Was The Silliest "Offense" That You Were Counseled For?
by minimus inwhen i was a teenager, i was told by an elder that because i smiled a lot and was known for my good sense of humor, that i should come across as "more serious".
so before i was appointed a ms, while in my late teens, i transformed myself into a much more "serious" brother.. were you ever told that you needed to work on something that you knew was stoopid?.

A "dear" highly spiritual sister councelled me on my son. He had ridden his bike to the group one evening and the chain had come off. He'd fixed it but by the time he arrived, his hands were covered in grease. After washing up, his hands were not greasy but a little grease stained. This sister watched him closely throughout the group and as soon as the amen was said, she turned to me in a hushed angry voice and said it was disgraceful for me to allow him to sit at Jehovah's table with dirty hands and that she would NEVER had allowed HER children to have come to a meeting in that state.
Now considering I was on my own, tired, and had a lively 2 year old to control at the time. That was the last thing I needed from her. I packed up the bags, got the kids shoes and walked out of there without a word to her or anybody. I was so furious I didn't trust myself to speak.
I got the feeling there were a few words said to her after I left as she was very sheepish with me after that.

I find this a bit disconcerting, especially on here of all places. Have we learnt nothing? Is it really a good idea to raise ourselves above the Watchtower and pat ourselves on the back for escaping only to stoop to their methods when its expedient for us to do so?
hmmm something to watch out for maybe?
what do you think?

Jeff
This thread was to remember Charlton Heston right? In Memorium yes? That means the good and the bad about him. Its not just a thread to HONOR the man.
When I made a reference to Witnesses and the way they respond to criticism of Rutherford I was comparing your reaction to my less than favourable views of Heston. They were the same. If you didn't like the comparison, don't react like a Jdub every time you hear things you don't want to. It has NOTHING to do with how you felt about gun control. Stop changing the subject and tying to act all aggrieved. Thats called a red herring.
Heston was an admirable man in many ways. In his involvement with the NRA I believe he wasn't showing us his better side. That is my opinion. Others agree with me on here and others don't, that's fine by me. So stop being so silly about this

It tells alot about a person when they stoop to that level.
Oh really??
Now you resort to Ad Hominem remarks to make your point.
Again, where have I seen THAT before........

isn't it unfortunate that instead of honoring a man for his life, what he stood for, and the good he accomplished, some feel a desire to fillet his intentions at the gravesite?
To be honest Jeff, that sounds just like something a witness would say when confronted with some of the rubbish Rutherford came up with.
Bearing arms may well be part of the bill of rights but just because you have the right to bear arms, doesn't make it a good idea. Just ask any one of the 1000's of americans who have lost loved ones every year due to firearms, either accidently or deliberately. When Heston stood on the platform and raised a rifle above his head and proclaimed in his best acting voice "FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS!!" Then I lost a great deal of respect for the man. Not as a man with an distinguished career in the acting profession, my respect for him still stands in that field. But I lost respect for him as a compassionate human being who didn't want to take into account the terrible human suffering that has been caused because guns are so readily available.
But he was only human, he made mistakes. In supporting the NRA I believe he made one of the biggest mistakes of his career.
By pointing out his mistakes does not negate the good he accomplished in his life but it gives a fuller picture of the man, warts and all.
And that does far more justice to his memory.

Take off your rose-tinted glasses BrentR. Charlie was no saint.
I don't believe he had altzeimers when bowling was made so stop making excuses for him. He was a great actor, I loved Ben Hur, but he showed little compassion for the 6 year old girl killed by a little boy because he found his uncle's handgun and took it to school one day.
If he was able to stand up and rally a crowd of NRA members with long speeches and pithy punchlines, then he was able to handle a one to one interview. If he couldn't because of ill health why didn't his people tell him to refuse to do it? I'll tell you why. Because he thought Michael Moore was sympathetic to the NRA cause and that the interview would be a good PR exercise.
When he realised MM wasn't as sympathetic as he thought, ole charlie left the building.
Now which other group never wants to hear negative info about themselves and runs away from hard questions??? Hmmm let me think...........

Good actor, bad at answering hard questions.
Come to think of it, he'd have made a good JW.

Do you think JWs actually care if they convert people or not?
by LouBelle inthe reason i ask this is because when i was on the field way back in the day - i really couldn't be bothered if the householder was interested or not.
if they took literature and paid for it (we asked a certain price for literature before it all became on a donation basis) it was a bonus, plus meant money for a cooldrink / tea & cake afterwards.. actually i would prefer it if they weren't interested so i could get away from the door - sometimes their ""conversation stoppers"" made too much sense and i couldn't answer back.. that meant i didn't convert anybody.
do you think most of the jws' are like that today?

I can't remember caring if nobody I spoke to came in. For me the important thing was to do the time and place the mags. One sister I know has been pioneering for 15 years and hasn't brought anyone to baptism. When I asked her how she felt about this, she just said it shows the preaching work is pretty much done here in the UK.
Now that I've been disassociated a year I can see things from the "other side" as it were. For example there was supposed to be 19 auxillary pios in the cong in March, and a real buzz for the work locally, but I haven't seen ONE witness out in service. I haven't seen them on street corners, working the street or out and about. And I definately haven't been called on. As I live on a small island off the south coast of the UK, youd've thought I'd have seen them somewhere!
Cant help but think they really overestimate the impact they have on the daily lives of people

Is there any way of getting hold of Rutherfords medical records? I know they're confidential, but does that confidentiality last forever? Is there a point in time where these records come into the public domain?
Anyone know the name of his doctor?
