To StillinLove: Well, it sounds like you have your mind and heart set on marrying this guy, so I won't waste my time or yours by saying, "Run, and get out while you can". Please find this website and bookmark it for the future, as you will definitely need it if you ever have kids: www.jwchildcustody.com .
Maryblondgirl: I watch the world events and live in daily fear that its coming soon and that i'm on the outside and will lose my life and the lives of my family. Does anyone else watch the events that have happened in the last few months and wonder?
This is a typical mind control technique employed by most religious cults. On September 11, 2001 I was out for 14 years, and the first thing I thought of was whether this was Armageddon. It takes a long time to get out of that mode. When you are in it, just think, "Well, if this is Armageddon, at least I will die with my husband and children". It helps you get through the fear. Months or years from now, you'll be over it. You will have a better chance of getting the thoughts of others on this board if you post your own topic instead of replying to a topic. Best wishes to you, and welcome to JWD!

JWs and weddings
by YellowLab indoes the watchtower frown upon jws and wedding parties and receptions?.
my reason for asking is my jw brother is having a small wedding at a local restaurant in july.
he is not having a bridal party, no flowers, no reception, and no children allowed.

I haven't heard any official word lately on weddings and receptions. But based on my experience with my jw wedding 26 years ago, there are a lot of rules to follow. For instance, most music, dancing and over indulgence of alcohol are either forbidden or at least looked down on, My husband was instructed to choose a male to oversee the whole thing and to stop anything that may be objectionable. We had no alcohol, and the band consisted of elders and ministerial servants. When they played "Wipe Out" and one of my "worldly" cousins swiveled her hips while dancing, the music stopped and she was advised to stop it. Aside from the rules, there is the matter of expense. I'm certain there would be gossip if the reception was at all ostentacious. The whole thing really wouldn't be worth the hassle in my view.

using humour with cult members
by besty infolks i needs some input on this subject.. i have 3 family members who are shunning me due to their jw belief system and i would like to prime some non-jw relatives on the use of humour to reach out to them.. its not right imho to poke personal fun or be sarcastic or unkind about their belief system so what do we do?.
any suggestions on how humour can be used in this way?.
garybuss + dogpatch - you guys are the experts - please advise......

Good idea, but I guess there aren't many funny things about belonging to a cult that demands shunning of family members.
I too have wondered what type of messages my "worldly" relatives could pass along to my jw mom, but to my mom and most other jws, there is nothing they want to hear from df'd ones unless it is that the shunned one wants to return to the cult.

What is the point?
by Princess Daisy Boo ini am tired.. tired of thinking.
tired of wondering whether every issue or hangup i have as an adult is because of my cultish upbringing.
tired of not having a normal relationship with my mother, father and sister.

So when does it end? When does it get better?
Unfortunately, as long as you have family in the organization, it never ends. However, as time passes, and you gain more "worldly" experience, the better most things get. There are holidays to celebrate, friends to make, volunteer work to do, and involvement in community, education, politics, etc., whatever catches your interest.

Murietta is in CA., and it is the same city in which a jw was tried and convicted of child molestation.

IF I did the right thing why do I feel so bad?
by IndependantThinker ini noticed a few minutes ago 2 sisters are on the block over from me.
i have told them over the past year to put me down on the do not call on list.
i figure it's going to ignored, so i printed out the 1981 boe british letter about child molestation and protection of elders and the amended page on that subject from the flock book (the one with the co's handwrittten notes) and stuck it in the handle of my screen door.. .

It's probably due to two things: 1. condiitoning and 2. it can be painful to reveal the real truth to the deluded. Think how much you are taking away from them if the come to believe the real truth.
The only thing that changed my mind about revealing the real truth to deluded ones is the child molestation issue. If anyone on this planet deserves consideration, it is the victims who were molested and thrown out of the organization for their trouble. Stop feeling bad and start thinking about just how wicked the WTB&TS is.

My mom thinks she has a big secret that is known only to those at the hall.
by JWdaughter inso, she tells me today has some interesting news, but she can't tell me what it is.
eventually, she revealed that her news was from the hall, but said it is a secret and she really can't talk about it.
so, i say to her--you mean about how the bookstudy is changing and not on a different night anymore?

The Aid to Bible Understanding book says jws are only obligated to tell the truth to people who deserve to hear it--it's called theocratic wafare. Anyway, she was only playing by the society's rules, so there is no integrity there.
How insane is it to flat out deny what is easily found to be the truth?
Well, how can jws continue to deny the sex abuse cases, the doctrinal flip flops, etc. when they are all over the Internet and the national news? It's easy--it's called DENIAL.

I think I remember hearing the name Shirley, but it was difficult to hear everything when several people were speaking at once. To undo the mute, you had to press *1. I had to do it several times during the first 2 hours of the call before I got through.
