Glad to see ya here flippers....
Life is very good for me.... sure you read the threads. In all seriousness, the happiest I have ever been, JW or post-JW. I keep dreading waking up from the dream. Thankfully its real.
Finishing community college in Aug finally. Will have an AS in Business. May have to take a break from school before pursuing a B.S. and catch up financially....and I am headed out to work shortly...only reason I am still here is the PO of the local congo stopped by...soft pitch this time....

about 15 people meet for a bible study in the home of the pastor.
the county has informed him that he cannot have a religious assembly in his home without first applying for a very expernsive permit.. hmmm.
maybe the society took home book studies away for legal reasons.. personally, i think the government has no right to tell people they can't meet up for bible study..
It is not a religious issue though I am sure they will make it one.
The issue is logisticsand safety. If there is enough room in the couple's driveway (if there is one) to accommodate all of their "guests", then no one has the right to complain....assuming that they keep noise levels down. However, if the is no driveway (or limited driveway), and the "guests" have to park on the street, then that is where the issue comes up. For an occasional party then that is just life in the city. First come, first served. If someone is having a party (or a bible study) every week and attracting lots of vehicles, then that is going to cause problems.
Where the couple crosses the line is that they are apparently in violation of zoning ordinances. A church zoning is different than a residential zoning. In my town we have residential zoning (R1 and R2 is single family; R3 is mixed, single family; R4 is multiple family (apartments, condos) and R5 is manufactured homes (trailers) and is restricted to a mobile home park). Churches have to apply for special use permits for just the reason in this case..it is causing parking and/or traffic problems...to get input from the neighbors on how an exception to the usual use of a property will affect everyone else. I think forcing them to apply for a permit and making the process transparent for public input is a good thing.
minimus:
Personally, I think the government has no right to tell people they can't meet up for Bible study.
I agree with certain exceptions. If the people want to all come in a single van (instead of 5-10 cars clogging up the street), and the house/property can accomodate the number of guests (for whatever purpose...bible study, frat party, tupperware, etc) without violating fire codes for number of occupants in a building, then yeah no problem..have the gathering.... But if parking is an issue, then the government has the obligation to protect the rights of all the people in a neighborhood. The purpose of the gathering is irrelevant but will be used to inflame the argument.
I have a personal stake in issues like this. My residential street is very narrow and barely can accomodate two cars passing each other slowly. My neighbor insists on parking on the street in front of their house, this despite the fact they have a perfectly good driveway that has room for two cars. It is legal but it is not safe. Their car blocks my view of traffic coming from that direction. There is no safe way for me to back out of my drive when they park there. I got hit recently because of this. (This cost me $500 deductible on my insurance to fix my car, $100 for the ticket, and $159 for the useless lawyer that was supposed to fix the damn thing when all he did was do what I could have done. This does not include whatever rate hike I will get come renewal.)
Every other tenant that has lived next door has not parked there when I point this out. These idiots (until recently) have insisted on their rights. I am trying to get the city to restrict the parking on this block since everyone has driveways that can accomodate at least two vehicles......until then....idiots have rights....

we had a blast.. first - yesterday i got my flags out and hung properly for the summer.. today we had a little bbq.
we had family and just a few friends over and played softball and talked and drank some beer.
my gay friend jeri and i did tequila shots [i never did that before!]..
I wish I could say I spent the day doing noble Memorial Day things. I did watch a couple of services this morning on TV. I presume the Memorial Day parade went on today in town despite the rain.
Today was a unique challenge....I spent the day with my gf and her 8 year old son. Because of the rain and the late start we ended up skipping the city museum (that's what its called: citymuseum.org) and the zoo and doing the science center instead...watched an Omnimax movie that her son wanted to watch .....in between him playing mini nintendo or whatever the hell that game is called (lol)...and trying to sneak just normal regular kisses from his young eyes...lol...no such luck... he was timing us for god's sake... challenging us to kiss longer .... where the hell does an 8 year old boy get these ideas..... TWO WORDS:
Family Guy.
Yep, I think his days of watching that show are over...... then we drove down to a pretty cool pedestrian friendly area a few miles away and had noodle dishes at one place and root beer floats at another... drove by my office to drop off work...took them both home.... really really really really tried to get the 8 year old to go upstairs to their apartment for a few minutes...no such luck... damn that Family Guy..... lol
By the way, I lost my infamous hat today (the one that was a replacement for the one I wore in TO). The 8 year old liked it....and kept wanting to wear it.....thought it made him look cool...and it does....., sweaty stains and all. I was going to give him my new one. Good thing I have the back up at home. I took the hat back from him briefly to wear to the car 'cause it was raining... he looked crushed.... so I gave him the hat (yeah, I have sucker written on my forehead by an 8 year old) and in return we got a tiny bit of peace as her son walked ahead.... very observant little kid....toodamn observant for his own good. His mom and I have dated only a week (but knew each other for 3 years prior) and her son is already planning our wedding. 8 years old...damn...lol... That's enough for the moment.... I promise I wont be blogging or posting all the time about us......but you asked how was memorial day.... you got it.... I love to write of course, so I am keeping a journal for us in case it goes well....and for ritual burning if it does not......these first few posts are part of that.... much more that will never see the light of day....
side note (but more germane to the board purpose)...she and I had a long talk about JWs (and Catholicism)...she went on the internet to learn more about dubs....and she still went out with me... I promised her that it will never be JW stuff that gets in our way... I am done with dubs...but a very good discussion.
A good day for the three of us. Regular mundane things in the way most of the week.... school and work for me, work and kids for her....
HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO YOU ALL......My dad was military, my brother was briefly....so a special salute to all former and current military.... I don't have the strength or courage to do what you do or have done for us. Thank goodness YOU do or did.

That's a nice facility... if you are forced to go to a DC (or CA's and SAD's there as my mom used to do), that is the place to do it.. wall to wall carpet and nice cushioned theater seating. The city of West Palm took a bath on that sale... WT bought the place, sold a bunch of the land off to Home Depot, poured what I hear is the largest concrete parking lot in S. Florida, restored the leaky roof, gutted the place...beautiful landscaping.
I think Beltrami used to serve as CO in St. Louis... fairly certain I met him.
Still a whitewashed grave. And how stupid does that spokesman sound talking about swine flu?..... sheesh...

while much has been said about bible dramas in recent years, very little information has been given on the effort that goes into one.. i thought i would share my experience.. i played a minor role in the 2003 drama, "boldly witnessing despite oppsition".
this was a full costume drama and revolved around overcoming opposition to the preaching work.. when a congregation is chosen for a bible drama, it is a serious responsibility.
the presiding overseer takes full responsibility for the drama, and in effect becomes the director.
Never been in a drama.. did watch quite a few rehearsals at the assembly hall. Those of us "regular" volunteers were allowed to watch, but we were reminded of confidentiality.... We were also the ones that had to move all of the dining room tables.... they were the kind found in many schools.. individual stools..8 to a table, all attached...fold up and roll around pretty easily. We also used that occasion to clean the carpets after 6 months of use for CA's, SAD's.
I was involved in theater in high school, always as a techie, never on stage. The JW dramas were a joke in comparison. But, to give credit to the dub "actors", most of them put their heart and souls into doing their best.
Of course, one of the "instructions" in the drama scripts were that if the characters were husband and wife in the drama, they had to be husband and wife in real life..... yeah.... one year, there were two couples in the drama...they were putting a lot more than their "heart and souls" into the rehearsals.... can you say wife swap? They carried on like this and performed in the drama.... it was found out not long after the drama.....
The DC I attended in 2006 ....one at home and one in Hamburg, Germany.... they had a full costume drama....that was the year they build the altar with the golden calf.... at Hamburg they just had smoke coming out of it and I dont know what was coming out when it cracked open...I was too far away to see that.
But in St. Louis, at the first convention, damned if they didnt have real flame shoot out of the thing.... and it broke open and all this stuff that looked like ash (really gray spray painted packing peanuts) come out when it opened up...best special effect ever at a DC.... (the second convention someone in stage department had tripped over the extension cord that controlled the set up...they just got smoke at theirs).
...maybe the best "special effect" at a DC was the year of the Noah drama... back in the 70s probably... It was held at the state fairgrounds in Springfield, IL.... it was hot and humid as midwest summers always are... the 90/90 rule.... 90 degrees plus F/90%+ humidity.... the flies were thick from nearby horse stables... umbrellas were out in force shielding us from the baking sun....
... "Noah" was standing in the middle of the (cant remember if it was the stage or the racetrack..I was young)....arms outstretched to the heavens, and forcefully the audio said "Jehovah, I have never seen rain before." The brother playing Noah, however, was not lip syncing to the tape...... he was laughing hysterically because he was being inundated with rain..... I think that was my best drama memory. Anyone else remember that one?
Most of the dramas in later years have gotten horribly lame....dumbed down...not the spectacles we used to have (or was that a childhood viewpoint of them affecting how I remember?)... and in 07 (my last DC) when they made up Bible characters ...how bad is that....
