Do JWs really believe the end is near?
by keyser soze inor do they merely pay lip service to the idea?
i have no doubt that some of them sincerely believe.
but when i was a kid, growing up in the '80s, i didn't know of a single witness, myself included, who didn't believe the end was close.

How do you handle ... being shunned?
by Awakened at Gilead inmy da announcement was last tuesday, so i have been on the official jw shun list for about a week now.... i am curious how you handle shunning.my situation:.
i have spoken with my family (my parents and 1 brother) and discussed whether they will shun me.
i explained that biblically they should not shun me since i am not an antichrist, and i have not rejected the teaching that jesus cam in the flesh.

I see your point over this one. All I am trying to say is that I personally find it quite frustrating that people on this website will not stand tall for their believes. When I left the Org, I left everything behind, 30 years of friends and family..
I hear you Marty. Everyone takes a differrent path out. I always think that if every fader stood up all at the same time they could trump the GB. I wish it were that easy.
A@G, the firat time I experienced shunning I was a teenager and it is one of those memories that are buurned into my brain. I was at a laundry-mat doing my laundry and Sister H came in. She was an old schooler and her son, Paul, was kinda the spiritual haed in my family since my mom was burdened witha UBM. Know what I mean? Paul did our family study and took us out in service. The whole 9 yards.
Sister H knew me from the tiime I was a little boy and when she acted as if I were not even there, it hurt me deeply. I'll never forget it. This sweet old lady standing there staring into space, ignoring me as I tried to greet her. I'll never forget that moment. I'm sure she is long dead now but, I will still always love her.

while i readily admit there were some "good," and "kind" jws in the congregation i grew up in.
and maybe it was the location -- my dad was asked to move there -- but for the most part it was an intellectual sahara.. yet i've noticed that on this forum there are some incredibly "smart" people.

Others of course, Blondie for her WT comments and Mary's brain always shines through even though she talks like a truck driver.

Met an exJW when I was out Friday Night. His pain broke my heart.
by str8?so is spaghetti..until you heat it up ini was out friday night with a few of the friends i have made since leaving jws behind, when lo and behold, it turns out that one of their boyfriends was an exjw too!
i was excited at first, as i had not yet met someone who was exjw and gay in the flesh until now.
however, my excitement was shortlived.

I was just like that guy. For 30 years. It wasn't until after reading CofC that the wheels started to turn in my brain but, the wheels were very rusty. I continued to "believe" it although I never stepped foot in a KH or convention since 1979.
It was reading and meeting people from JWD that finally freed my mind. I still have bad days but I know in my heart that we were all deceived by a publishing company.
