Wow, that Slate article makes some interesting points. I think the most interesting point is should the journalist be assiting the prosecutors office. Very interesting.....I dunno...I think the reporter was right, he iddn't have a lot of easy choices.

Hmmm....any kids that all of a sudden has money or new things...that is such a huge red flag. Sounds like his mom trusted him, and didn't ask very many questions about the web business. It is really too easy to let kids that are having a hard time socially to just get online and deal with it there. I don't think there is anything wrong with making online friends...if I did, I wouldn't bother coming here hahah. But to use the internet to try to completely replace offline friendships is dangerous. I am not thinking so much about physical dangers, but if someone can only make friends online, etc...then they have no motiviation to improve their social skills to deal with people in person.
TV, video games, computer games and the internet are all privillages in my house. And these are the first to go out the window if there are bad grades or behavior issues, etc. My son does have a computer in his room, and the younger kids have one in the living room. My husband knows a lot about computers, so there is a lot of things that the girls cannot do from their computer. I must admit, I don't really monitor my son's IMs..though I could....but he knows that my husband can and does some time check logs of where he has been etc.
It is good the kid is trying to make amends. I realize he was young, and his father sounds like a piece of garbage...but at some point he knew what he was doing was wrong. I am glad he is trying to move on and take responsibility for it.
given that so many practises associated with christmas are blatantly christian in origin but christianity endorses spiritual self-flagellation/crucifixion, moderation, and enough "-isms" to make your eyes water, is christmas truly for fun?
i know that often there are few christian connotations attributed to it nowadays, in such a hedonistic and sensory society, but history is on record in showing that the whole baby jesus thing is definitely a christian element.
would any true hedonist today want to drink such a mixed cup (potentially of poor-grade wine)?
Interesting...I told my husband in IM today let's just take the word CHRIST out of christmas and just call it Xmas in our house, because nothing WE do on December 25th has anything do with Christ.
And neither does most anything else that people do on Christmas hahah...except for the nativity seen and church...but you already know that you, you trouble maker you.
I am going to make a Flying Spagetti Monster to put on top of our tree...no star or angel for me, thank you very much hahah.
ok i was kidding about the mason thing.
if i find the original i'll post a transcript.
right now i can't find it and the text seems blurry when i post the scan.
I think that is very interesting, but I think any JW you send it too well be like: well, he didn't know any better. He didn't have the "new light" yet that showed they shouldn't celebrat xmas"
yadda, yadda yadda...that is very cool though.
=)
i really fancy reading r franzes book " in search of christian freedom".
has anyone read this book?.
if so is it worth a read?
yes, that is a good book...I need to reread it.
Actually, if you are looking for fluff, Harry Potter books are fun. I am currently working on the 6th one.
"Job: A Comedy of Justice" by Robert Heinlein. I read it about 6 months or so after I left the KH. It is not religious, per se, but it made me think quite a bit about belief systems, etc.
dandelion wine is one of my favs, by Ray Bradbury.
I read CoC a few years ago. Well worth reading. I have not bothered with In Search of Christian Freedom, mostly because I am no loger any kind of Christian. I may read it someday though, because it has been spoken of very highly by people on the board.
I just finished Anthem by Ayn Rand...a bit black and white, but an interesting, if not simplistic read. I just started We the Living by her as well, but Think I am going to finish the Harry Potter book first, since I have a very bad cold and cannot handle anything too deep at the moment hahah.
i am so sick of this whole, "war of christmas" junk that the conservative groups are harping on this year.
i have people on my own street with signs that say "keep christ in christmas!
" give me a break!
jeez louueeezzz...I had no problem leaving the class or staying home. Gosh almighty...the schools down here call them winter festivals or winter feats etc...
How about "Winter Trees?" Does that sound stupid, too?
Hmmm....yes, I am being a bit silly, I agree. It just doesn't sound right the holiday trees...but that is just a matter of semantics for me, it doesn't offend me.
I hate the words panties and purse too. Don't know what to tell you...I am a freak I guess.
here is a thread about a letter that was recieved telling elders to give the blood talk early this year.. "special talk" being given next week about blood.
did all congos get this?
did this come before the news on this board?
Ip..you were an elder? But..but...you seem like such a NICE guy ??!?!?!?!!?
no wonder you had to leave.

I agree...it is crazy...just say thank you, and add your own greeting if you so desire.
If some says to me Merry Christmas, I am going to smile and say "Thank you! And have a Happy Human Light Day!"
And in February, I will say Happy Darwin Day...which down here in TX may get me some looks, heehee. Don't forget, Happy Festivus!!!
The right wing is going nuts right now. So sad. Yes, you can keep Jesus in Christmas...just don't make everyone else forgo their holiday celebrations that have nothing to do with Jesus, thank you very much. (Not that Christmas - except for the Christ in the name- has anything to do with Christmas celebrations.)
I do agree that "Holiday Trees" just sounds stupid. But that's just me.
