The police knocked on my door
Police : Are you a Jehovah`s Witness ?
Me: I`m sorry I don`t know Jehovah ,or was even aware that he was in an accident ?

even though i now consider myself an atheist and have little time for religion as such , i have to acknowledge that some religious institutions , and even some i would consider a cult more so than others , do a fantastic job in the field of charitable works.. for so many in our communities who are disadvantaged ,in one way or another , the down and outs , for a better phrase , those that have succumbed to alcoholism , drug dependency , mental illness in it`s many forms , homeless people , juveniles suffering abuse of one sort or another at home , domestic violence , etc.
etc.
the list just goes on and on .. yet their are religious charitable institutions who are at the forefront of helping these people offering and lending a hand both physically , emotionally , and even financially to support these people without judging them .. so even though i consider myself an atheist i can commend what these religious institutions do to for these people... i can`t say the same thing for jehovah`s witnesses who will take , take , take and give nothing in return.. smiddy.

I am an Australian , Shriners ? , I`ve never heard of them ,but from what I read here they put the religion of Jehovah`s Witnesses who call themselves a charity to shame ....shame ,on them .
Rebel , I would be proud to be associated with an organization like that.Kudos to you.
The reality is organizations like this need money to finance their operations and for so many truly charitable organizations to raise money for their cause takes a bit of ingenuity to compete .
However the proof is in the pudding as to what they achieve for the community.
edit to add : I just googled Shriners and found their is a chapter here in Victoria since 2009

it's easy to think of exjws as being a single amorphous group but the more i think about it, the more i believe that there are two distinct sub-groups and wonder if you agree.. there are those who believe and those who don't.
i know that seems obvious but let's break it down a bit more.
there are those who don't and never believed and some who are looking for a religion to match their beliefs.. i used to think this split would be between born-ins and converts but of course it's possible for born-ins to be believers although i suspect that many, like with other faiths, do so simply because they have never experienced anything else or made a conscious choice.
I was a convert aged 19 and up until that point not a religious person. As a young child my parents made us kids go to Sunday school , though they were not religious themselves.
At about 11 or 12 years old I rebelled and refused to go anymore , and I remember that was the last time my father ever used the strap on me.
I think those years instilled in me a sub-conscience mystery about the Bible that lay dormant in me for many years.
As a young person at school I never joined the Cadets or the Boy Scout movement because I didn`t want anybody telling me what to do or when to do it.
I relished my freedom to do what I wanted to do when I felt like it. I started smoking when I was thirteen and drinking when I was sixteen , and by the time I was 19, I was wondering what life was all about , the futility of it all .
At that time a workmate opened up to me about the JW`s and for the next 33 years I was a Watchtower Slave.
For somebody who couldnt be told by anybody what to do, then joins a cult who dictates his whole lifestyle.?
Go figure

my eyes for ttatt opened in 1995 with the generation change and the wt magazine stated "some witness thought that the generation started in 1914".
since 1997, with internet at low speed, i followed h2o hourglass, www.xjw.com and later on www.jehovahs-witness.net.. did a bachelor and post bachelor since then.. now, nearly completed with fading, i feel it's time to go on with my life and do some other things, spending more time with my wife abd children instead of thinking about jw topics in my head.
goal is being a better person and less grumpy at 45.... everything what could be said is already said.
I`ll miss you Gorby , I always enjoyed your posts.
I always thought of the K.G.B. when I saw your Avatar LOL
Take care cobber ,

i found out this morning that my brother died last night, he was also an ex jw, 73 years old and died of heart disease and kidney failure.
it was not totally unexpected, as he had been in poor health, but it's a blow, especially as i just lost another brother two years ago.
there were six of us, now only four.
So sorry for your loss Lisa Rose
