Convince me
by Liza ini am highly considering becoming a jehovah's witness.
i have been raised in the congregration, but left it when i was a child because my mom left too, but we still retatined the core belifs including the ressurection and the blasphemous pagan influence on mainstream churches.
my mom has recently returned to the congregation, and it has helped her a lot.

Holidays
by BR25 ini am a former jw, but i still believe what they do about the holidays?
i have already talked about origins and all that stuff so i wanted to ask something without bringing up scriptual or historical backgrounds for a change.. my question is (whatever your beliefs may be) what % of people who celebrate christmas, if you took the presents out of christmas would still acknowledge christmas as much as they do now?
note: as much.

I beleive no matter what religion you are from including jws it is disrespectful to celebrate things that dont have a great beginning. But men have their opinions and if thats what they think thats what it is. I am sorta of a hypocrit on this subject though. I have celebrated it the last few years, and yeah it is a blast, but in the back of my mind I know it is disrespectful no matter what religion you are from. I know there is many arguments against jws on here, but no matter the arguments, and how fun something is you gotta know its meaning.
Its just alot of subjects on here dont make any sense. Like people responded to this topic and said that they dont care about how these things started they will celebrate it anyway. doesnt make much sense, and also these same people are looking up how some of jws beliefs started, and then everyone supports it. Whats the difference.
Also, I know the kids enjoy holidays, but how can you not take the beginnging of christmas and especially halloween into consideration. Do us humans not get tested, or from what people tell me you pray to be saved and everything is automatically ok.
Why didnt a wise christian along the way change the day of celebration if it is something that it is to praise jesus. Why because people accept it as it is, and you cant prove a man wrong. To me no matter what religion you support it seems like most of the celebrations are a slap in the face and not praising. Sure men think nothing wrong of it because it brings families together, and everyone has a good time, but what do you think god thinks of it when it is celebrated from bad rituals and false gods. Why not another day????

arthur, i like how you put your last paragraph. I beleive what the jws do. You said only jesus knows who the other sheep are, but so many christians I talk to say they already know their fate because they felt jesus come through them, so good point.

Memorial 'Holiday"?
by onlycurious inif the dub's don't believe in celebrating holidays, what makes the memorial different?.
-
BR25
The memorial, the passing of the bread and wine is mentioned in the bible that is why it is acknowledged. It is not something that started with pagean customs, symbols or whatever, but it has scriptual backing that is what makes it different.

First of all I am new on here and I was just brousing through alot of the comments that is why I said that alot of the stuff about holidays, birthdays, and so forth. I dont celebrate holidays mainly because of how they origined and who they originated from. Everybody digs up info on jw's and everyone supports, but as soon as someone sticks up for the jws on something that it is a good argument it gets shot down. I guess I can understand why people celebrate the holidays in general, because they think it is because of something good, and alot of people mean good by it, but if you dont celebrate and you have good reasons why (origins, customs, and so forth) it should be ok. Bye the way we do have a memorial for jesus we just dont celebrate easter. No biggy!!
Alot of people on here do got good opinions, but so do some of the jw backers on here, but every time a jw says something and backs it up all anyone wants to do is poke fun.
I can pick apart other religions and their beliefs just as easy as other people do with jws. I guess athiests is the way to go.(sarcasm).

Hey I havent been going to the hall for about 6 years and I feel the same way you do, but I would find out for myself. I still believe in what the jw's believe.
people on here try to make valid arguments for example. The watchtower comes from something bad, but the they support holidays. That is very hypocritical and you know. When people tell you to the read the stories on here read them all, some are very stupid. Like all the easter conversations. How more pagean can you get. These are the same people who let the kids go trick or treating, because it is for the kids. Geese while dont you just throw the bible on the ground.
people on here also give alot of examples of jws on here, but just remember that there are bad people in every religion including jws so dont take these examples to heart.
The 3 main arguments on here are birthdays, blood, and holidays and I am sure you know why we dont do these things. Remember god offers you everlasting life, this life maybe offers 75. When listening to peoples opinions on the things remember they are just man made opinions, not scriptually or historically backed.
My info to you is ask yourself how your life has changed since you left and that should give you the answer.

"Watchtower" is a term from witchcraft NOT Scripture
by FuzzyPaul inhas anyone else ever noticed that there is no watchtower in scripture as part of any particular teaching but there is prominent use of watchtower in dungeons and dragons type games and forms of witchcraft including spells involving watchtower?
see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/watchtower_%28magic%29.
and msn search for watchtower alone & with magic spell or occult or witchcraft.. ct russell was a 33rd degree freemason ( illuminati) nutcase who read books by guys that measured the lengths of the halls in pyramids to foretell the future by.

Its about the giving. . .
by JWdaughter ini saw this on newsday.com today.
this is an excerpt of a former jws take on holidays and their experience with learning to celebrate the.
i am sharing what i think is the gist of the essay: .

and what does everyone else offer? Wonderful man made holidays from pagean rituals. I would rather be a zombie. The bible offers a longer life than the 75 yrs most people live now. No matter what your religion is, you should take origins into consideration. So jws dont celebrate holidays? Big deal. there is nothing great about how most holidays began, and there is no scriptual backing so what is the big deal. If it werent for presents 98% of people who claim to be true christians, wouldnt acknowledge as much either, especially the kids.

Our Neighbours are learning!
by fullofdoubtnow inwe live in a block of 6 flats, with communal security doors at the front and back.
apart from between 7am and 10am every day, when the trades entrance button will open the front security door, no one can get in here unless they have a fob to open the security doors with, or unless one of the residents lets them in.. the jws were just at the front security door, obviously getting their hour in after the morning meeting.
they don't ring our bell, they know better, so they were ringing the other bells.

I am a former JW and I just joined this site. I dont really understand everyones opinions on here like this topic. Not everyone agrees with jws, but that doesnt mean there has to be a lack of disrespect. Everyone is poking fun of what the neighbor guy said using foul language so how religious does that make you? If you are athiest I guess it dont matter but if your are from a religion you shouldnt be disrespectful. I havent been to the hall in about 6 years are so, but even so noone elses beliefs really make a whole lot of sense either. I have been reading comments on here for a while, and few people on here really give informative comebacks on here. Most of it is made up sarcastic stuff that has no significant backing. Sorta like holidays
