  Black or hispanic accents are judged negatively. European accents are not. Why is that?

  Because there is no such thing as 'black accents'. Europeans speak like people from Europe, that is an accent. Blacks who were raised in Europe also have a EUROPEAN accent. Not an ebonics accent. Blacks who were born and raised in Africa have an African accent not an ebonics accent. Blacks in France speak with a French accent.

  Ebonics is slang..period. Slang is fine for casual life if someone chooses to use it but if someone cant use proper english on a job interview, in a meeting or formal situation then shame on them and they have no right complaining about being oppressed.

  If your theory is correct then kids should also do drugs, have sex, cheat on tests, drink alcohol ect ect since there is peer pressure to do these things also. If they shouldnt cave in and do these things just to 'fit in', why should they lower themselves to poor language just to 'fit in'?

  Understandably, for kids in school fitting in is very important but there comes a point where they should know that its not THAT important. In these neighborhoods it starts with acting 'dumb' to fit in by talking like an idiot and it ends with robbing someone for the latest $200 shoes to fit in and ending up with a criminal record.

  I've been teased for 'talkin all proper' too but I joke about it and go on being who I am. I was raised in a normal mixed middle class area by black parents but it just so happened that I wasnt around the type of people who spoke in ghetto slang so I didnt pick it up. Its not part of who I am and I wouldnt add it to my speech just to fit the black american profile of who I should be.

  a week before the fest and my little one has come down with mono!

  doc says it can last a week or up to a month.

  i'm keeping my fingers crossed 4 days of r & r is all that he needs to get better and that i dont catch it.

  No Neon..I'm going to jersey first for a couple of days then leaving the little one with family and heading off to DFW for some apostafun. At least I hope so.

  Doc says it can last a week or up to a month. I'm keeping my fingers crossed 4 days of R & R is all that he needs to get better and that I dont catch it. Were supposed to leave for Jersey on Wednesday next week.

  Anyone got any secret home rememdies for mono? Doc says there is nothing to do but treat the fever and not do anything too physical.

  but I end up forcing myself to talk ghetto since I'm the only person talking like a "white guy". I

  this sums up the whole problem in one sentence. people who care more about what their 'homeys' think of them than they care about themselves, their future, their family ect.

  all that matters is being "cool". if being stupid is 'cool' then even smart people will act stupid as your statement implies. all that matters is what other people think.

  what i dont understand is why and how these black people in these areas have convinced themselves that learning and educating themselves linguistically, academically, culturally is 'acting white'. this kind of thinking makes me sick.

  racist people over the decades have tried to convince them that black people are second class humans who are incapable of anything involving intelligence. all blacks can do is play sports. and when people say that speaking proper english is 'sounding white' to me that just means that you have bought into there way of thinking. which is sad.

  i can only hope that i am successful in raising my kid to realize that being highly educated is not optional and if people make fun of him for acting and speaking intelligently, rather than stooping to their level, he will walk right by them with his head held high.....all the way to the bank. They will probably not be intelligent enough to see the irony when he is operating on them in the hospital after they get shot in some gang bang drug deal gone bad.

  Whether or not she was negligent or not doesnt mean it wasnt an accident. The problem is that it was preventable. They make tub seats that prevent the baby from going under the water. I see no reason why a one year old cant be washed in a tub even without the seat. Obviously you cant leave a baby alone even for a minute and unfortunately a LOT of parents have learned that the hard way its, not necessarily common sense to everyone that has a child.

  Would everyone be yelling murder if it was a man taking care of the child at the time? Or would it be simply a sad accident due to negligence.

  Doctors should give a test to each parent before they leave the hospital and administer manditory parenting classes to anyone with a failing grade.

  It is sad though

The first time i exposed myself to apostates, I was imagining matured people, more matured than the JW's. What i got is you people. Very dissappointing.   The Bible clearly defined what an apostate is: loose morals, like dogs returning to their vomit, arrogant and haughty, impatient, cynics, causing divisions, have trouble following authority-all of these qualities, all summed up, i saw here.

  I dont think we are talking about black english v white english. Everyone may drop their speech to a more casual level when they are at home as opposed to in the professional world however I think what Bill Cosby was talking about people who are so uneducated that they do not even know the proper pronounciation of words so as to use them in the world. Its surprising the number of people who use phrases like 'where you at?' 'dat aint mine' ' dem's his kids' ect ect. That is NOT black english or any kind of black dialect. Its simply poor grammar as a result of lack of education or lack of desire.

  That is not to say that there isnt a 'black' version of the english language. As a professional I spend 90 percent of my day speaking to clients on the phone and 90 percent of the time I know when I am speaking with a black person and they know that I am black. I have a very professional phone manner as do they and thus it has nothing to do with poor pronounciation and misuse of words that gives our speech its cultural distinction.

  It is a mistake for people to keep trying year after year to give people who speak poorly an excuse for their lack of education. Ebonics, Black Vanecular English,.....whatever. Its all just laziness. Those people, black, white, hispanic or whatever, would just rather spend their energy complaining rather than opening a book and learning something. They are taught from infancy to sit around and watch tv instead of reading books or to worry about what kind of clothes they have on rather than what kind of grades they make. Their brains are so unused that it becomes hard work to learn the simplest thing.

  I like Bill Cosby and he has a good point. I get quite annoyed when I hear people talking the way that he described in that 'ghetto slang'. Its terrible and just adds to the perception that all black people are uneducated and ignorant. Such is not the case however and what I dont like is that people take the actions of these few uneducated, ignorant people and lump ALL minorities in together as belonging to that class of people.

  There are also a lot of white people who are uneducated and dont know how to speak properly too but that I guess is besides the point that he was trying to make.

  Anyway, maybe coming from a black American idol like Bill the comments will make some of those people stand up and look at how easy it would be to educate themselves and their children.
