How old were you when you got baptised???
by digderidoo in.
i was 15, quite old compared to some.. a friends child has just got baptised at 13.....to think that she knows what she wants for the rest of her life at that age seems ludicrous.. so, who here got baptised at the youngest age?.

It was my 12th year, but I was still 11 1/2 and it was in 1959. And now I regret that I did it so young. I hadn't even entered puberty yet!

How long do you think being a JW will affect you?
by Adam ini haven't been on this board for a while.
i've been on a conservative ezboard trying to see if we can't do something about political issues.
i've also got a new job, had to get the car fixed, been best man in a wedding, and watched the two towers on vhs.

I was raised to be a JW as well. My mom and dad were Catholic. My dad never became a JW, but was a non-practicing Catholic. And my childhood was in the '50's which left my teenage years and young adult life to be lived in the '60. I have seen lots and lots of changes, people coming and going. etc. I do think having values based on the Bible is a good thing--but I also had guilt probably because of my parents being raised Catholic. So there was a double whammy with me.
I have come to learn most recently though that life can throw you a curve ball right out of the blue, especially when your mind is on something completely different, and can throw you for a loop. I am experiencing that right now, and hopefully I can share this later. Life happens...and sometimes there is nothing we can do about it.

I've heard all about you!
by SM62 ini have heard about this forum from someone, but i won't say who as i don't want to expose them.
i am in the process of evaluating my life as a jw.
it has been a pretty sad life - without a real feeling of 'belonging'.

Hi Terri!
I am a member of this board although a lot people here don't know me. I had stepped away for a while (maybe about a year and a half) because I felt some people were being a little to "feral" and I just didn't want to deal with it; but I don't see them anymore posting here maybe because they have moved on. Please don't be afraid to post your views.
The group that is here now seems like a great group of people. I have been lurking...... and maybe I'll participate a little more regularly.

I guess it is a pretty shrewd move...and the GB won't ever go to prision like in the days of Rutherford--they just step out of the picture and let the other guys go to prison, if it ever comes to that.

This is just another series of articles of many over the past few years which a problem is presented (first article); some facts are mentioned and the seriousness of the problem (second article) and the solution--God's kingdom. (third article)
This is a formula they have been using for any problem that the world is experiencing now.

Oh and Victorian Sky just reminded me of another woman in the Bible who was not a good example of being a "christian woman" and submissive to her husband--namely Queen Vashti.
First of all, King Ahasuerus was not an Israelite--he ruled from India to Ethiopia--he was not a worshipper of Jehovah and neither was Vashti.
Second of all, in that male-dominated society, would any woman have wanted to be paraded in front of all the people and princes, even though beautiful? Well maybe a vain woman would have, but I get the feeling Vashti was shy or just was getting tired of being paraded about (do any of you think this was the first time he tried this???) and so she refused to show up. I say "you gooooo girl!" She stood up for herself, finally. Maybe she was the first feminist although I am not! (read the account: Esther 1:1-21 - 2:1-4) Seems like all Ahasuerus wanted was to be with beautiful women. Was that a good example of how a "christan man" should be????
Thirdly, the nerve of the society (a few years ago) to have used this account in a Bible-reading assignment on the Ministry School to show how women should act--using examples of people who didn't worship Jehovah to do it!
And what really got my goat at the local level, was that the school overseer assigned this reading to a teen-ager, unbaptized, who couldn't care less whether he gave a talk or not--and for him to stand up there and in his conclusion, state how "christian women" should conduct themselves, and that Vashti was a bad example --boy I was just fuming. It was like counsel--I guess it was counsel...I just couldn't believe the school overseer didn't have enough "discernment" to give this talk to at least a person who was baptized! What was he thinking???

I just heard this one by a "visiting speaker" a few weeks ago on Sunday:
Women need to be in subjection to their husbands! There are too many marriages dissolving in the organization.

I have a question about the assemblies.
by twolips in.
when i was young (er) the society said the army came to the assemblies to observe how they fed the flock.. my question is, even though the asemblies were much more grander then now, with the food distribution ending and all, feeding thousands of people.
now they bring their own lunches.......i regress...does anyone remember how the military was in awe of us?.

Mispah,
I remember those days well. I also remember a rumor that Nat King Cole was at the International Convention in 1958 distrubuting the trays. I was there--I wonder if he really was.

This is an excellent thread! I agree with all of you and find myself sort of bored at the meetings sometimes. It's all the same old thing over and over again. Maybe we don't need these meetings, esp. the mid-week meeting so much, although I do enjoy the school, perhaps the service meeting should only be once a month.
The society keeps stressing that the only way we can be strong is "field service, study, prayer, and meetings." I've heard it so much it's like a mantra. Many fellow witnesses believe that study means study for the meetings. However that is not the case at all. And lately I've noticed they've been emphasizing reading the Bible daily, so maybe they see this problem as well.
Funny thing though, they might be sabotaging themselves by suggesting more reading of teh Bible, because when I read the Bible, I find things that say what they say, and not the spin the society puts on it. I have found all kinds of treasures in the scriptures, which have helped me to shape my mind not in accord with the society's thinking all the time. I wonder how many other witnesses feel this same way?
