alcoholism a clear and present danger for JWs and XJWs?
by quietlyleaving ini was having an interesting discussion with an xjw recently and we both knew of elders who were alcoholic but who were allowed to keep their privileges because their condition was described as a disease.
the elder i knew was also spotted in a drunken state on a couple of occasions.
he kept his privileges.

finished the essay, sent it off and feel on top of the world with the freedom I now have.
I definitey agree that acolohism creeps up on one and it can be that one only recognises that it is problem when it is much harder to climb out of.
So I use the term alcoholism more loosely to include when one is going into it (for self help purposes). The culture of drinking that Farkel mentioned is a huge factor both within the organisation and outside of it. I know that this was so at Bethel amongst some Bethelites. But of course many at Bethel hardly drank at all.
I guess I'm particularly concerned about those who are in a no man's land both within the organisation and outside of it. And probably "acoholic" elders would also fit into this category. So how does one avoid destroying oneself?
Would having a structure that one has created for oneself help? In the organisation (or any strickly scheduled place for that matter) one has a very limiting structure imposed on one. On the other hand the lack of any structure can send one reaching for the bottle more than one wants. So would a flexible structure one makes for oneself be the answer?
edit: avatar is so me - thanks simon

yes blondie I understand. I certainly do not want to give the impression that child molestation happens a lot amongst Jehovahs witnesses. Regarding your point that family members are ususally the perpertrators. I most definitely agree.
But on the other hand what is it about the family situation that gives rise to this? Aren't aspects of it to do with the fact of closeness, accessibility and power. Could the familylike closeness, accessibilty and power structure that Jehovahs witesses aspire to and achieve contribute to the development of of child abuse amongst them in the same that it does in a literal family?

thank you all for your comments.
yes outlaw - quiters who quit quitting life I'd say
I agree that total abstinence is the way forward if one wants to come out of alcoholism.
But I think the benefits of being alcoholic must be very strong. I wonder what an alcoholic is trying to say about their life, particularly a jw about his/her life and an an xjw about theirs?
IMO a JW suffers from too much restriction and not enough spiritual mindlessness intoxication whereas an xjw would seem to have all the time in the world to find some spiritual mindlessness intoxication. As almightyhomer said wine does have sacred associations. So is it important for xjws to find some spiritual intoxication to avoid the snare of alcoholism?

elders simply don't believe that children are molested at the KH (at least round here they don't). They are adamant about this. But they do admit the possibiltiy of children being molested at book studies. I wonder if this is because more brazen and more frequent molestation has taken place at bookstudies?

Lack of connection to apostolic church
by greendawn inthe jws claim they are the true christian religion even though they only appeared suddenly and very recently.
but what is it that connects them with the early apostolic church so as to make it possible for them to claim they are its successors?.
indeed if we check out their history we see that their immediate predecessors and teachers the adventists were rejected by them as a false religion, they believed in hellfire and the immortality of the soul.

The elder I knew was also spotted in a drunken state on a couple of occasions. He kept his privileges. Whereas if you are not an elder and you have been seen in a drunken state you will face a judicial committee and risk being disfellowshipped.
This conversation also got me thinking about the whys of the tendencies towards alcoholism amongst JWs and XJWS. I'd like to know what you all think?
