bttt bcause the site SAFF is quirky enough to warrant bringing to the top .
but if any are reading it please appproach critically as I have to say I definitely don't agree with some of the views expressed there.
we have been discussing child murders/murderesses (and alleged connections with satanism/occult) in our literature class.
i was amazed to see this expose of reachout trust come up in the discussion.

mad Sweeney,
I don't know whether to be glad or dismayed that courts in other countries seem to be as backwards and lacking in sense as those here in the USA. |
this is the position I often find myself in regarding our court system.
well we now have a new prime minister and new coalition government forming and I wonder if there will be changes to how much power the police have. Although I did not vote conserative (centre right) I do agree with them that the police have too much power at the moment and this needs changing.
I think we will have more freedom of speech and less surveillance. The labour government (centre left) was, I have to admit, becoming quite authoritarian.

Here is a quote form the site that had me spilling my coffee
In Scotland a man was prosecuted for flying a 'Nazi Flag' outside his home. His neighbour was Jewish and complained. In court it turned out that the man was a Bulgarian immigrant and was flying the Bulgarian State Flag (which contains an Imperial Eagle) on his National Day! Instead of criticising the police for bringing the case to court in the first place the judge threw it out with a warning to the Bulgarian that he should have taken into account the sensitivities of his Jewish neighbour before putting out the flag! |

New Stars In The Satan-Scare FirmamentThe two new Star speakers are Jacqui Dillon and Ellen Lacter.Literature from the Bowlby Centre states: 'Jacqui Dillon is a survivor of organised ritual abuse, torture and mind control.' Dillon heads up the Manchester Hearing Voices Network, a group of people whose common denominator seems to be that they have at one time or another been diagnosed as schizophrenic and who are dissatisfied with the orthodox treatment of the illness. Auditory Illusions are a common schizophrenic phenomenon which most psychiatrists fear the patient must live with but these people have formed a self-help network to help other sufferers to cope with the disturbing nature of voices in the head. Uniquely amongst this network Jacquie Dillon seems to be insisting that the voices people hear in their heads are those of Satanists who abuse them as children and who now have access to the victim's thoughts in some unspecified way. Be sure to understand this because the idea of a separate personality overtaking and controlling a person's mind is the theological definition of possession of the body by devils. However Dillon is not a psychiatrist and she is not a psychotherapist. We want to know why the Bowlby Centre are allowing an unqualified person to attempt to persuade listeners to redefine the standard psychological definition of schizophrenia? Although this is not the place for an in-depth debate about the definition of schizophrenia it is important to ensure the reader understands the crux of schizophrenia as depicted in the medical textbooks and that is: 'The subject ceases to experience his mental processes and his will as under his own control; he may insist that thoughts are being put into his mind or removed from it by some alien force, or suspect that he is being hypnotized. He hears voices telling him what to do , commenting on or repeating his thoughts, discussing him between themselves or threatening to kill him. ' Oxford Companion Of The Mind. pp697 The Satan Hunters are on very dangerous ground trying to redefine schizoprhenia as a symptom of Satanic Mind Control. It is the same mediaeval mind-set that caused epiplectics to be forcibly exorcised to rid them of devils. Think that couldn't happen again? Then you are wrong; recently a teenage epileptic was beaten to death in an exorcism ceremony designed to cure him! |
this week i finally finished college.
feels great to finally be completed.. i have to say that the process has been therapeutic.
a year and a half ago when i started to go back i still defined myself in terms of my experience as a jw.. that is all gone now.
congratulations Drew. What a great feeling it must be to have finished your college course.
I'm working very very hard as I have 2 major exams coming up and I really need to pass them in order to get to the next level. I attend sunday meetings now and then; and always get a subtle comment in during the Watchtower - usually about holy spirit or Jesus Christ with some greek from the KIT. I will always have affection for ordinary JWs and will always be amazed at their strong faith and disciplined lives but knowing at the same time I could never be like that ever.
There is nothing like family, and like you, I intend to stay close to mine.
best wishes to you and your family

my goodness - they are going to extremes over there
i think you guys might find this interesting.
please feel free to disagree.
an idea running through plato's thought and plato's socrates is that "nobody does wrong intentionally".

An idea running through Plato's thought and Plato's Socrates is that "nobody does wrong intentionally". And that therefore knowledge is virtue and wrongdoing results from ignorance.
This is similar and different at the same time to what Jesus said - that wickedness comes from the heart - Matthew 15:18-19 NWT "For out of the heart come wicked reasoning...these are the things defiling a man"
I'm not clear about Jesus' reasoning here. Is he saying as James said that sin is only sin when desire has given birth to sin (Jas1:14&15). Or is it as the WTS says, that there is sinful desire.
if one 'googles' the phrase, you get 167,000,000 hits!.
'bing' it, and you get 129,000,000 hits.. here is a sampling of opinion from just the first page of google hits.. 1] douglas groothuis, ph.d., teaches philosophy at denver seminary.
here is his 'take' on truth: http://www.leaderu.com/theology/groothuis-truth.html.
good question Jeff "what is truth" but I think it would need to be met by more question "who is asking?", "who is being asked?" and "what is the reason?"
For example if a judge or lawyer is questioning a witness then of course he wants the plain facts as they happened, in order to arrive at the truth.
If we asked a poet or an artist or a religious person these questions they would point to their inspiration and their deeds/work. Others may agree that they have caught "truth" in their deeds/work but different peoples perceptions and appreciations will vary. So in this case very often general consensus establishes" truth" and we have different groups with thier truth. However individuals may have their own truth which they live by too
If science or mathematics was examining truth then of course they would deal only with what can be verified, observed or reproduced by experiment etc.
i'm quite interested in this subject at the moment.
i was reading that in some cultures when the stories, myths and traditions began to be written down the stories etc underwent transformations as they were now accessible for critique and for moral judgements to be added.. i'd like to hear your thoughts leo and anyone else who has anything to share/discuss.

justhuman you said
There are many traditions that came out from Mesopotamia and adopted by the Israelites, since the founder of the Jewish Nation is from that region.
We have a lot of commons between the first 5 Books in the Bible, starting from the Creation, the Gilgamesh Myth-Noahs flood, along with many other common things they have...
yes the persians had a huge impact on ancient Greeks and I agree that this happened with the Jewish nation too. Many Greek thinkers came form Ionia on the coast of Asia minor. This spot saw a lot interaction and negotiation between east and west.

thanks Leo - just what I was looking for. I do have a vague memory of reading the thread 7 months ago. So this rang a bell when I read in my course books that when the traditional oral stories began to be written down people then tried to make sense of them and they underwent changes. A sort of interal critique began to manifest itself in the stories. So ancient writings (particulary those that want to be seen as whole but are by different authors) do have these tensions running through them. I think this is part of the beauty of the Bible and if we engage with this aspect it can be very rewarding and faith building too.
