here is a controversial article that I am still digesting - but I was particulalry interested in the misunderstandings between what western feminists wanted for muslim women and what muslim women desired for themselves whilst they fight for their rights. This article inspired my comment on page 3 of this thread about keeping aware of those who are fighting for change from within in their own way.

demonizing Islam seems to be one of the rites of passage for xjws during the early part of their exit. I also remember trawling the internet when I first started question to worldviews and came accross much fundementalist propaganda against Islam and for a time believed some of it and was shocked and disgusted. It was tempting to see Islam as the new satan and put such things far away from me.
Also when we compare christianity and how it was 250 (& plus) years ago with how Islam is today we are forgetting one huge thing. Christianity gave way to secularization and nationalism (plus fundamental religion of course). Under nationalism violence is given a civilized cloak but it is the the same violence as that practiced by whichever religion you would like to name at any time. Violence predates man. Assuming a righteous stance regarding your own country's violence and condemning another group's violence smacks of major hypocrisy and ignorance.
Does this mean we shouldn't condemn violent acts and atrocities? Of course we should but we also need to be attentive to the violence and atrocities committed by our own countries before we point the finger. At the same keeping attentive to the fight going on within a country or a religion for change.

Children and fairy tale monsters
by jgnat ini was sorting through my favorite quotes tonight, and this one floated to the top:.
"fairy tales don't teach children that monsters exist.
children already know that monsters exist.

nice points jgnat
I have 2 small grandchildren and was wondering if it would too grown up to ask them if they can think of different endings to stories? I haven't tried this yet but will perhaps when they are older.
epics are great too.

designs, have you read part 3?
While I have focused on cults, these identifying marks can be applied to many abusive sects and movements within Christianity. Many of these abusive groups within Christianity can be identified by a strict authoritarian leadership concept. Basically, the leadership is very resistant to any correction that comes from members that they consider to be on a spiritual level that is lower than their self-perceived level of spirituality. Further, if the Bible is used in the correction, the leader will respond with the movement’s tradition, as if that movement has the authority to rewrite Holy Spirit inspired Scripture! One of the many identifying marks of a Christian is that one does not think to highly of himself (Rom. 12:3). I am writing this series is to shed light on these sorts of abusive leaders in the hopes that those under these sorts of leaders will be made aware of the techniques these sorts of leaders utilize to keep people under their abusiveness. In addition, I pray that any church leaders, who recognize the use of any or all of these mind control techniques, would recognize the error of their ways and repent before God and men of manipulating people in order to gain power of them. -
