Question: How, exactly, does philosophy underpin science?
by bohm ini have seen the statement in the title thrown around a few times (bts, i think looking at you), and i thought i would throw out the question and see what happened.
i properly need to a few definitions: science will here be defined as both physics and mathematics which in turn is defined as: .
physics: stuff that happends in a laboratorie and stuff written about what happened or is expected to happend in nature.

I'll have a bash. To me philosophy is "the thinking" that underpins science and mathematics. Whereas what often happens is that science and mathematics can be constrained by the state and its purposes. Philosophy can free science and mathematics to deal with open ended problems rather than with stuff committed to a particular purpose.
but I'm not a philospher just sometimes an armchair one and tend to muddy the waters

My "Cult", "Exclusive Group", Etc.
by AGuest inmay you all have peace!.
some years ago posters on a predecessor site to jwn put forth the allegation that i was starting my own church.
very recently, allegations have been made that i am forming a cult/trying to pull together an exclusive group.

aguest, you explain what I mean in your opening post. What you seem to be describing there is that you partake of the phenomenon of Christ - this phenomenon is much more than us. Jesus also partook of this - and he says so in the gospels

imo, aguest, you have moved way beyond the Christ of the gospels and he did say this would happen didn't he. I think anyone here who may be following you will also move beyond you. so no worries.

My Family
by alice.in.wonderland into those that have accused me of insensitivity about abuse:.
my father and his brother and sisters were raised by a man who became rich in the 1950s.
he owned a construction company during a housing boom in a metropolitan area.

Alice thanks for sharing your story. I can empathize with you over your father's position in your family and your complicated relationship with him. So hugs to you.
When you first joined I found your posts so very difficult to understand and simply gave up, leaving it to others, who seemed to understand what you were saying, to enter discussions with you. But your thread here clarifies your take on the WTS enormously. And whats more I think you have changed a lot as you point out on page 4, post 854- I can understand you more at any rate

Let's settle this for once and for all...... is atheism a belief, a non-belief or an anti-belief?
by Quillsky inmy opinion is that atheism is not a belief.
it is a belief in no belief..

Interesting Terry,
Yeah, there is a rather delicious heretical "bad boy" air about the label "Atheist", I have to admit.
I don't want to come over all 'Taoist' but due to the recent discussions I've been pondering what the various 'camps' of Theist, Agnostic and Atheist bring to life, because it seems that despite our personal preferences and beliefs, or lack thereof, they all end up serving their purpose in the "machinery" of life, so to speak.
What I think Atheism brings is 'heat' and Atheism is the agency which opposes and 'rubs up against' Theism, the resulting friction causing 'heat', energy, passion. Theism and Atheism are the partners in that heat generating 'Tango' and the heat probably fuels change, motion, possibly more rapidly than would otherwise occur.
Agnosticism may be more realistic or truthful, but it's not a very potent agency for change or movement and while that isn't 'right' or 'wrong', life doesn't seem to much care for 'truth", it just seems to want to move, and therefore agencies of motion appear, antagonistic opposites leading to explosive combustion out which movement and new combinations continually arise.
Abstract ramblings. LOL.
you'll enjoy it here essan - abstract ramblings and all. we have many explosive combustions on JWN which makes a change from JWdom. Like animals (this is not a cuss btw) we form alliances/ packs have our "fights", generating more energy and change, keeping things lively. Alliances dissolve. Then another fight comes along giving rise to new alliances. Then there is much sniffing around each other to determine whose side you are on - a little snarling and snapping - sparks and flashes - cuts and thrusts - warriors most of us - lol. I'm sure everyone goes away with something even its its more likely to be a bruise. Not many sheep here I'm afraid - wolves, goats and hyenas -
I think Taoism recognizes this if I'm not mistaken - being that the yin and the yan tuck in closely together - explosive forces together with strong but gentle forces -tango-ing and moving along continually

great thread. well argued essan. my favourite line
It strikes me that making claims that newborns are atheists is a symptom of the atheists zeal to convert the world - now they are conducting forced 'infant baptisms' LOL.

To the Household of God, Israel, and those who go with...
by AGuest in... may you all have peace!.
there's been such a lot of "ruckus" on the board lately (well, not a lot in comparison to the entire board, but a lot for some of us - lololol!
) that i wanted to give you all something that might help you feel a little "lighter"... and remind you of who you are.

shelby I can see that you live your experience. But at the same time why do others need to be seen as bad, dark, etc and in such loaded language? Let us live our experience whatever that may be - dark, disorderly whatever.
As for Skepticism - it is just that, skepticism. Why does it have to do with right or wrong?

shelby, you know that its all about you. You have your own unque style of writng. Your own particular epithets - all different from Jesus Christ too. I have no problem with you or your particular style of spirituality. You have found a way that suits you but each person needs to test their own emotional makeup to see whether or not a particular path is for them. I think an important aspect is to address medical issues that may be affecting one.
Regarding the the experience in your opening post - all we are doing here is registering skepticism in our different ways. often people hanging around macdonalds may be selling drugs - this is true in my area; they may be professional beggars - also true in my area. For example an individual will come begging and another person steals your bag while you are busy with the person begging.

To new Christians on JWN
by brotherdan ini wanted to make a few comments to those of you that have recently begun to question or have already left the wt and made their way onto this site.
this site is a great resource to learn how others are coping with leaving the organization and moving on into a fulfilling life.. i wanted to write this post because i think reading something like this would've been helpful to me to understand where a lot of people that comment on this site are coming from.
you are going to hear from a wide range of people that have moved on to a diverse range of beliefs.

when I was first leaving I read the gospel of Thomas and found it quite uplifting.
At the moment I only read the bible at the few meetings I attend but follow along using my KIT. However there are other sacred texts in addition to the bible and I quite enjoy looking to see why people found them divine and how they used them as escape routes from oppressive conditions
