i'm fuming now!!!
anewme:
first of all I have to complete almost 1600 hours of study along with case studies plus 600 hours of in salon experience to get my diploma. So to say that i get little education for the amount of responsibility i have is a stupid assumption on your part.
yesterday i massaged a woman who had just had a minor operation on her arm to remove a mole.
i had to ask her if the mole was benign or malignant? if she had any other moles on her body? if these had been checked as well? since she told me it was all fine and SIGNED it in her consultation form i was able to give her a treatment OR ELSE i would ask for a written consent form from her doctor. AND THAT IS JUST ONE OF MY CLIENTS. I have to do the whole bloody thing over again for each client i have.
i hold a diploma as a beautician and i'm constantly having to ask if people are on medically prescribed exfoliants, if they have nut allergies, if they suffer from diabetes, epilepsy, or urinary system disorders, if they have metal pins and plates, cancer, etc. For each ailment there is a detailed course of action to be taken. and it's not innate for you to know these things you must go to school for it!
second:
you obviously know little about the profession since you don't even know what the licensing requirements are outside your own little part of the world.
you liked to refer to chiropractors....guess what?? In italy no chiropractor is legally recognized it is still seen as a quack profession. In france only doctors can do aromatherapy, not massage therapists or beauticians.
the people who have little respect for ANY decent profession are people with little minds and little life experience.
if you were so secure about yourself you wouldn't feel necessary to denigrate a profession that as you can see some of the posters here have and take pride in.
and third these statements have tainted the whole purpose of the thread which carla has explained meant to say how do JWs reconcile being a massage therapist and the popularity it has gained in the JW community with their puritan beliefs.
If anewme IS a witness...i guess he/she is a good indicator of what their thinking may be.

jw Massage therapist
by carla inwhat is the deal with this?
it seems i hear more and more about some jw woman who is a massage therapist.
i can't think of a more unseemly occupation for a jw woman that is legal.

where was your Kingdom Hall JH? afghanistan?? lol
carla i understand your question and while it's not a dfing 'offense' the therapists in the KH where i went to were not frowned upon since they mostly did it to work part time and pioneer but they weren't a prime example either.
when i announced i wanted to be a massage therapist they said " and massage fat hairy men?"
yes that's exactly why i'm going into it.
even if they don't df you, i'm sure they've counseled people on the 'dangers' of that type of work and it certainly adds wind to the gossip mill. -

another thing...
you don't have to be a saint to refrain from crossing the line with clients. it would be unethical. most professions have a code of ethics and so do massage therapists.
massage is an essential part of many culture's daily life such as india, madagascar and pacific islanders.
it's not an integral part of european or american culture and has been sexualized by the media and therefore most people's perceptions are warped by this flawed representation.
as massage therapists you see so many bodies that it becomes normal to you. isn't it the same for chiropractors, doctors, surgeons, etc?
clients who want extras are either mistaken about what you do offer or just creeps who get excited by the idea of being in a room alone with someone and getting them to do something they didn't want to do.
If therapists engage in such acts they either do it for the money or for their own illicit gratification.
you don't have to be a massage therapist to have plenty of opportunities to do something ethically wrong.
what about the scenario where a Big manager asks the new young secretary to come into his office for a "friendly chat"?
so does that make it difficult for a person to become CEO because "think of all the temptation with secretaries walking around all day long in short skirts"
if you care about your profession and about your own integrity, your family, etc..there is no reason why your work should stumble you.
temptation will arise in all aspects of life. they usually come when you least expect it and where you least expect it.
If you go into the massage profession with the wrong motives then it will probably happen not because of the profession but because of your mindset.
ok enough.
sorry i do care about the profession and i just wanted to make a point although a bit lengthy. but i do understand how most people view it and i didn't want to lay blame or go on the defensive. -

he wants PICS IN THE MAGS because what people do in this or that congregation doesn't show the thought of the society on the subject.
Even if they do write an article where they say it's ok, pictures in the magazine have a stronger impact and to this date he has seen none. that's why he wants them. right??
alex i've seen one once in the awake but they're very rare. -

i don't know why people are feeling so insulted by this thread.
by little schooling i don't think the poster meant to diminish the commitment that it takes to take on a massage diploma. JWs don't like four year colleges so anything like an associates degree or less is a good alternative for them.
i'm a massage therapist and i'm not offended by any of the comments here although it is true that some people still have this concept in their mind for some reason that therapists also offer sexual services. What massage therapist do you go to?? if he or she offers sexual services and advertizes them as well(i know they don't come right out and say it but you can understand by the language used) then you probably aren't going to someone who is not qualified and could even harm you.
As therapists we have to learn anatomy and physiology extensively, diseases and disorders, precautions to massge and contraindications.
it's as respectable a profession as any other and really helps people.
there's always people at the hall who are going to have to say something regardless of what you do.i found the best way to survive there was to just NOT SAY ANYTHING about ANYTHING about your life. JWs are so sexually repressed they see sex everywhere. -

Did You Ever Think The Demons Were Bothering You?
by minimus inwhen i was younger i used to have terrible convulsions and hear "voices".
my mom was convinced that it must be "the demons".
the congregation prayed over me and eventually i went to a doctor that was able to figure out why i was so sickly and presto: everyone's prayers were answered..

i had a few dreams that really scared the crap out of me. it was always a demon trying to suck out my soul. the brothers asked if i had anything that might invite demons. i reluctantly said i had the davinci code and angels and demons by Dan Brown and there was a statue of a little angel that was my landlord's in the room i was renting.
they looked at me like i was crazy.
i told them i'd give them away to someone.
they said no you would invite demons in their house.
i told them i'd throw them out.
they said no someone may stumble upon them and take them home.
they said the best thing to do was burn them....
WTF???? where? was i supposed to do a sacrificial chant and dance as well?
i threw them away and by god i didn't have the dream for a long time. then they came back. now having a clearer mind to analyze that recurring dream i understand that it only meant i felt someone was trying to take over my life and i was losing control.......demons or the WTS??
when i started freeing my mind from the JW the dream would come still and i wouldn't be scared of the demon anymore. he was just a part of my life but didn't frighten me anymore even when he approached me to suck my soul.
not spooky because i repeat : it had nothing to do with demons. -

Would Anyone Ever Be Able To Tell That You Were Once A Witness?
by minimus inare there still some of those jw qualities than rear its ugly head once in a while??

people were surprised i was a JW.they thought i was too normal....
for all you guys that got that a lot did the people in the cong ever tell you "when worldly people think you're like them then you have to consider if you act like a christian in your everyday life"
they always told me it was something wrong that i was doing i.e. accepting people for who they were and listening without judging???
i lived my life thinking if i want people to be tolerant towards me as a jw then i must show the same tolerance.
one thing i still can't get rid of of the JWs:
i can't wear a skirt above the knee!! i still can't do it! how odd! the only time i wore a skirt was when a boyfriend bought me one and i only wore it with him and kept tugging at it....it was only a few centimeters above the knee. nothing major.
can i just say MINIMUS i think you put out some of the best posts on this forum.
cheers. -
