Human DNA exttremley flawed?
by bboyneko ini was reading today some dna information...someone said that human dna has over 4,000 flaws in it, and how can this be if evolution is survival of the fittest.
it does pose an interesting question.
if god created us, why so many flaws in our dna, and if we evolved, same question.. what is so strange about human dna is that, unlike any other member of the animal kingdom, it contains 4,000 flaws, some of which are responsible for a range of genetic diseases.

Where did that quote come from, Dan? It doesn't fit with what I know about biology. I'd bet you found it on a creationist web site.
Basically, the errors in DNA are what evolution is all about. Every time there's a copying error there's a small chance that it will be an improvement. If it is, then it usually propagates rapidly through a species; if not, then it usually dies out fairly quickly, for reasons that should be obvious.
Most, if not all, genetic diseases are recessive meaning that even if you're a carrier, chances are you won't have the disease. However, if you mate with another carrier there's a one in four chance that any child you have wil have the disease (a one in two chance that they'll be a carrier, and a one in four chance that they'll be completely clear.) That's probably one of the reasons there's such a taboo against incest, because it increases the likelihood of such diseases occurring. Some genetic diseases can have positive effects in carrier form, such as the sickle cell anemia gene, which protects against malaria.--

If the guess is not fully correct, there are smaller prizes for correctly guessing each of what I have defined to be the important components of the picture.
One guess per person please. Answers can be in picture format or a detailed text description. All will be revealed and prizes (if any) awarded some time after 8am my time on Monday. I think that's 3am board time. In the event of a tie, I may choose to split the money or give the prize to the first person with the correct answer. I know it's not exactly 100% scientifically foolproof, but I think it might be fairly interesting.--

No, no, no, no. Scientists talk about the "mitochondial Eve" and also has a "Adam" figure (I can't remember exactly which genetic component he is named after),
That's "Y-chromosome Adam", less useful than "mitochondrial Eve" because the Y-chromosome doesn't contain much genetic material.
These are widely misunderstood concepts largely due to the use of the names Adam and Eve. Basically, the evidence coming from these studies shows that our most recent female ancestor on the purely maternal line lived about 150,000 to 250,000 years ago. Our most recent male ancestor on the purely paternal line lived, I think more recently, but I'd have to check that. The important thing is that these people were nothing like the mythical Adam and Eve, they were nothing special at the time, it's only in retrospect that their roles become significant.
The fact that they existed is indisputable; the studies just went some way to determining when and where.
Incidentally, for them to have lived only 6,000 years would require a rate of evolution at least 25 times faster than that currently accepted by scientists.
Not sure of any books that deal in depth with the subject. River Out of Eden by Richard Dawkins has a chapter on the subject though--

for some strange reason, i decided not to eat for a day, then when i found my thinking clearer and my emotions mellower, i fasted for another two days.
so after the third day, i was walking down our street and i saw the houses burning after me, i felt this was an affirmation that marriage was decay and destruction, or wasteage.

It certainly explains the majority of experiences, and is difficult to rule out in any cases, unless the visions make some sort of testable, non-trivial prediction and that they do so more often than can be explained by chance.

Basically, if you've experienced them, you know they're real. If you haven't, their nonsense. As the other postings on this thread show.
Of course they're real. And they're usually caused by such questionable activities as not eating for three days, or taking hallucinogens, or by something else that upsets the chemical balance of the brain.
