One of the Watch Tower Conglomerate's businesses is banking. This corporation is extremely wealthy. They also own a very large insurance company division.

announcement at service meeting
by heathen ini actually went to the service meeting last night and low and behold the announcement was about the wtbts not charging interest on the loans on kingdom halls anymore but they still had to pay back the principle balance , i never knew they charged interest but think that it was a very dishonest thing for them to do to begin with .
you have to borrow money to pay for a building that the wtbts owns?
to charge interest is a very worldly practice since it was against mosaic law to do so and clearly jesus would never have asked anything of the sort .

The only thing that's missing is a casket and another flower stand.

EMPTY KINGDOM HALL
by thebigdebate ini have heard from my father (who is an elder about 50 years old) that there is a great seperating work going on within the org.
he said that almost all of the people my age 25 to 35 have quit going to our hall (about 20 people).
i have not been to a meeting in about 1 year.

The Watch Tower did it to themselves. They made it so unfun, so hard to be a Witnesses, that a lot of people are saying "No thanks!".
It's kind of hard to expect people to be attracted, to want to do volunteer work, for an error prone company where the job is socially unpopular, personally not fun, and financially expensive. Where's the payoff?
All the Watch Tower was ever based on was the threat of doom at Armageddon. In the last century they were able to sell the concept that safety from a murdering god was available for sale by doing door to door book sales for a United States based book printing company. I'm not really sure that's gonna work very well in this century.
It's not working in my family. -

Leaving the Organization but not the teachings
by donny inwhen i left the witnesses in 1992 after ten years in the orgainzation, i got as far away from the teachings and mindest as i could.
however some, like my former brother-in-law, also left, but are intent on finding ways to reform the society from within since he believes in the society as being of god, but that it has become misguided and is slowly drifting to "christendom" status.
one of the things he cites as evidence is the wtbts become aligned with the united nations.

It'd be like trying to turn a Model A Ford into a Lexus. It might be possible, but why would ya want to?

Do you hate elders and ex-elders?
by nvrgnbk indo you think they all ended up being elders because they were ambitious and loved to exercise authority over others?.
or do you realize that each elder has his own story and that some became elders under great pressure?.
do you really think that all of the elders enjoyed participating in judicial committees?.

I like practicing elders. Talking to an elder is more fun that playing ping pong . . .similar . . . but more fun.
Some of my best friends are former elders. -

Captives of a Concept
by Mickey mouse inwhat a fantastic book!
i really enjoyed it.
i loved the way don cameron refused to get bogged down with arguing for an alternative scriptural interpretation to the witnesses.

Yup! Well done! It focuses on the core issue, "the authority".
Unfortunately now the "appointment" is in hazy outline in many Witnesses' mind. They don't know the names of the leaders or the history of the claim. The claims and the concepts can't be discussed or challenged because they are a taboo subject for Witnesses.
That's how the Watch Tower protects all their weaknesses . . . make talking about them a sin.

Is Genesis account just a myth?
by AK - Jeff inthere are many stories that make we wonder if anything akin to solid reasoning can prop up the bible's accounts of early life on earth.
but perhaps this scripture is a key:.
"these are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the lord god made the earth and the heavens, and every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the lord god had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

Here's the deal: Where we came from isn't important unless I'm trying to sell a connected myth about where we're going.
Some "true believers" I know are upset that a da Vinci art painting might contain fact, but they fail to appreciate that literature is also as much art as a painting.
My advise: Don't bet the farm, your education, or your life on the art of literature being communication from space aliens. -

My Dad Told Me I'll Never Retire...But I Should Still Have a 401k
by B_Deserter inhe was telling me that by 2020, none of "this" (the weeeerld) is going to be here, but it's still a good idea to have a 401(k) because you can use it for other things, like a down payment on a house or something.
then he started talking about how he never thought he would retire, and now he's faced with it.
i just kind of thought that was funny.

I was told by the Watch Tower Witnesses that the "new world" would be here before I went to high school. I turned 64 this year. It was all a scam. We were set up to labor for free for a book printing business.

Elder calling around
by Am ha·a'ret ini'm a new member as i've not completely left the org yet and being a "good lil jw" would never have looked at a site like this previously!
there is one elder in the cong who calls around every so often to "chat" as i only stopped attending meeting a couple of months ago.
i've spoken to him about certain subjects - eg the un thing and the misuse of quotes - but he has no useful answers for me.
