For born ins- what tipped you off it was wrong
by teela(2) inat a young age i remember watching tv and commenting why is the red cross always helping people and we don't.
the second big one is if the witnesses only started up in 1890 - 1900 did jehovah not have anyone else doing the preaching work?.
as a child i don't think we think about theological problems so what tipped you off?

A number of things, some of which I'm still discovering, led me to leave after almost 40 years of being a born-in. Specifically, though, I'd have to say cultish, mind-control tactics such as:
1) Discouragement of higher education and looking into non-JW literature, including studying Biblical Greek and Hebrew.
2) Disfellowshipping, especially by family members.
- If I were to move back with my mom, she could talk to me about anything except spiritual matters, because "being disfellowshipped does not sever the family ties, normal day-to-day family activities and dealings may continue." However, once I move out, all contact is stopped except for "rare, necessary family matters." How has moving down the street changed my status as her son?

The increasing number of the anointed. Comments, anyone?
by dgp ini'm very much enjoying "the orwellian world of jehovah's witnesses", by heather and gary botting.
now, this excerpt comes very much to the point of this thread, i believe:.
page 145: "still, in 1975 the society clearly feared a continuation of the upward trend in memorial partakers, and in an article entitled "annointing to a heavenly hope - how is it manifest?

Possible-san, thanks for posting that.

When did the new watchtower setup take effect?
by EndofMysteries ini forgot, and doing some comparisions on things, i know this was probably talked about much so the date is probably fresh in someones mind.

RubaDub,
I remember back around the '94 era when an older brother from Brooklyn visited our hall. He gave the public talk, during which he alluded to the Setup. Since he seemed to stray from the outline quite a bit, most everyone considered him one of those quaint old-timers with a few loose marbles.
In retrospect, he was giving us all an insider's glimpse of the Setup situation, but it took some time and the Internet to bring all the details to light.

I'm so sorry for you (((Bumble Bee))) I wish I could offer you a real hug. I hope you find comfort in recalling happy memories with her.

I agree, she's gorgeous.
I would like to think that she has a good sense of humor, too. Anyone who can laugh at herself is beautiful in my eyes; I wonder if she's seen this

$29,000.00 Tip Given - Notre Dame says, 'Oops... give it back!'
by jeanniebeanz innotre dame sues caterer mistakenly given $29g gratuitythursday, september 17, 2009. the university of notre dame has a new tip for a catering employee they mistakenly gave a $29,000 gratuity check: give it back.. a lawsuit filed by the indiana university claims sara gaspar used the accidental check to pay bills and buy a new car, myfox chicago reported.. notre dame claims the check, which was supposed to be for $29.87, not $29,387, was issued on april 17 and alleges caterer gaspar never notified university officials about the blunder.. gaspar claims when messages she left regarding the check went unreturned, she assumed the amount wasn't a mistake.
she also said her supervisors told her the check was legitimate and they would pass on her messages to the human resources department, myfox chicago reported.. "i guess because it was there and i was in a bad situation, i went out and spent it," gaspar told the south bend tribune.
"i was so excited ... i thought, i could pay some of these bills.".

The amount of the check should have been written both in numerals and in words and they shoould be the same.
Good point, Only Me. Years ago, when I worked at an S&L, if there was a discrepancy between the numerical and written amounts on a check, our policy was to go by the written portion.
the bank did not apologize or admit any mistake.
Sacolton, yours is at least the third experience that has mentioned this. I guess some banks feel that the old saying should be changed to "The customer is never right (so no need for apologies.)"

Does marriage work
by wouldacouldashoulda inhi posters.
in the uk 50% of marriages fail.
maybe around half of those who stay married are not really that happy.. .

If both partners are willing to work at it, and are both willing to compromise when necessary, then I say yes, monogamy works and is wonderfully satisfying.
[I said monogamy, instead of marriage, to recognize the fact that a legally recognized marriage is not available for the majority of gay folks in the world.]

Oct. 15th WT - WT Society Manipulation " Find True Friends Only in JW land"
by flipper inwell- you knew this was coming next after the article of how to be jesus friend.
so the wt society was setting it's members up to seek friends only in the ranks of jehovah's witnesses.
basically in this article " maintaining friendships in a loveless world " - even from the title you get the impression the wt is showing that the world is loveless- but the jehovah's witnesses are not.
-
Steve_C
Worldly friends do not 'leave'. The wt keeps the new convert so damn busy they have no time for anything much less keeping up a friendship. When they do meet up again with old friends their sense of humor has been wiped away, they have become sanctimonious judgemental zealots who look their noses down upon everybody else, of course they won't have many friends anymore! Preaching at people is not a relationship.
Thank you Carla; you hit the nail on the head!

A few years ago I discovered a deposit that was made to my checking account, but I hadn't made it. It was a direct deposit for $800+. Since it was an odd amount, like $879.34, I figured it was someone's payroll check. I immediately contacted the bank, who said they'd take care of it. A month later the funds were still in my account. I contacted the bank once again, and they assured me it would be taken care of.
After the second month, I decided to transfer the money to my savings because I didn't want to accidentally spend any of it (but it wasn't like I couldn't have used it). I guess at the same time the bank finally decided to correct the error, because almost immediately after the transfer I received a terse phone call from the bank. They almost seemed threatening when they informed me that I would have to return the funds. I explained that they could find the money in my savings. I received neither a thanks nor even a softer tone.
I had previously worked in a savings & loan, so I know that I probably saved someone's job by not spending the money; two months is way too long not to resolve an electronic transfer issue. I can only imagine what the person who was really entitled to the funds was going through.
Anyway, my opinion is that that this woman considered this a 'blessing', but deep down inside knew that she wasn't entitled to the money.
