The Bible - is it really the GOOD Book - if so why?
by cantleave inafterall , it condones murder, genocide, infanticide and a plethora of other nasty things.
it is contradictory and unscientific.. hell; lets be honest it's hard to read and harder to understand.. so why is it called the good book?.
discuss!.

If I wrote a book endorsing genocide, rape, xenophobia, slavery, and child murder, but interspersed a few trite "love is good" sayings throughout, I wonder if I'd be hailed as a divine messenger of love or just a deluded psychopath?

Pika_Chu, to be fair, people who say they were athiests at the time have had "religious experiences" that converted them.
However, anyone who assumes that such an experience must be caused by an invisible being communicating to them rather than simply a vivid hallucenation or waking dream is not a big fan of Ockham's razor.

They love to bring up the dog returning to its vomit in reference to anyone who joins another church... I think that joining forces with Babylon the Great is probably worse.

Interesting website.
"The Christian definition of evil is anything done by one of God's spirit beings (humans or angels) against Him (or His created beings). As such, God is never responsible for evil - only His created spirit beings."
As seen above, religion gives us a way to rationalize ignoring our own moral compass. When "God's" definitions of "good" and "evil" are used, entirely new standards are created for good and bad. Suddenly, rape and genocide may not be evil anymore, but good or even necessary.
As for me, Raptor Jesus is my shepherd, since he went extinct for my sins.

If "God" is trying to talk to me and I'm just not hearing him, isn't it equally possible that Lur of the planet Omicron Persei 8 is also trying to contact me and I'm just refusing to hear him?
And if I believe either of those things, I'd think a psychological problem is much more likely than either of them being true.

What say you Christians ???
by wobble init seems to me that most, if not all christians are really hung up on sin and redemption from sin and how naturally evil we all are.. my question, and observation is this : i had nothing to do with whatever you say adam and eve did wrong, i have always, throughout my life, treated whoever i came into contact with compassion, respect and love.. i have lived by the golden rule.. not many people, hand on heart, can say that, i can.. so, is your god going to judge me for the "sin" of some mythical forebears of mine ?
is he going to say that , because i did not believe in him, i willl be judged adversely, even though i lived by the precepts he is supposed to support ?.
all i can say is, if your god is like that, i refuse to worship or acknowledge him.. and i certainly do not want to get to know him.

Ah yes, and the REASON for Adamic sin is particularly delicious... HE WANTED TO THINK FOR HIMSELF. As the Watchtower is so fond of reminding us, INDEPENDENT THINKING is our great foe. The alternative, of course, is DEPENDENT THINKING.
Since we cannot rely on our own imperfect brains to effectively analyze information and come to correct conclusions, we need to take the word of a greater source... which just happens to be written by other men! Because, you know, they don't suffer from your same defective brain condition.
The mysticism of religion always has been and is still just a way for people to control other people by getting them to voluntarily abdicate their responsibility to think.

I agree with Lime. The concept of inherent SIN is nothing more than a way to make you you always OWE A DEBT YOU CAN NEVER REPAY, BUT WILL BE PUNISHED FOR NOT MAKING PAYMENTS ON.
Religion has always been a marvelous tool for clever and power-hungry men to control masses of ignorant people, but the introduction of Adamic sin was a brilliant innovation enhancing its effectiveness greatly.

Sex at 14?
by headisspinning inhello all.... some of you have been following our story from the beginning - and even those of you who haven't should be able to relate to my quandary.... last week my 14 year old son told me he no longer wants to be a jw.
we laboured over telling his jw dad all week.
well, on friday night he finally came clean.. but in a bizarre and unexpected twist, after having sex with his girlfriend for the very first time - in his father's home that very afternoon.

I think showing them pictures of genital warts should cure them of the desire to have sex for a least a few months. Repeat as necessary.

There is definitely a link between teen sex and other detrimental behaviors...
http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=38544
Of course even if there were no studies on the subject it's intuitive that a lack of self-control is not likely to exhibit itself in only one isolated type of behavior.
Tec, thanks for sharing your experience. Everyone has a unique story and most of them don't fit the norm (whatever that is) perfectly.
For all I know there are lots of 14-year-olds who have sex regularly and keep their grades up, never do drugs, and never experience any adverse complications from their (fully mature and informed ) choice.
Oh, what would I do to stop my child? Sorry I can't tell you specifically, but that would wholly depend on the unique child and the specifics. I can't really postulate exactly how I would now handle a relationship with my hypothetical 14-year-old son, but I do know he'd have 14 years of dealing with me behind him.
