My wife and I am befriended with a couple we know from one of our past congregations.
He used to be a MS and pioneer but has resigned to personal and health reasons. He is also out of work and of course not content with his situation.
She has had some problems overcoming smoking which she restarted some months ago but now quit gain.
He has not attended meetings in months, she does it whenever she can (which is not often). Both have a rather naive belief in Jehovah and somehow in the borg.
Both now and somehow respect my current view. They still are having contact with us and we visit each other as often as we can, there is some physical distance.
At our last visit, I showed him the German report on child abuse in the borg on VCR.
Today, 2hrs ago, she told my wife on the phone that she begs me not to bring her husband down again(right word?) because he was rather depressed after our last visit because of the report. She also confessed her (overcome) smoking habit to an elder and now regularly attends the meetings.
She says she will talk to me about it the next time.
Well, I hate it not to speak about those things. That is what I had to do at the KH - remain silent and smile. And I hate it that she tries to speak in behalf of her husband. I feel now after overcoming her smoking habit (which we were silent about) she has this Holier Than Thou attidtude.
Any ideas what to tell me when she wants to speak with me?

I posted your letter to the German XZJ-Infolink-board. This is a reply that came from a female XJW that used to attend an English congregation in Germany:
Looks like they hate their old ones. My "mother" told me, my grandma was disfellowshipped, which she wasn't. Just as if she needed an excuse not to care for her. She even complained when the city of Cologne sent her a letter saying that grandma had applied for Sozialhilfe, and they were looking for the family to care for her in first place.
And my great-grandma hat 6 strokes, only after the last one she was doing real bad. But my "mother" told me constantly that she couldn't speak anymore, nor eat by herself nor wash herself aso. Which wasn't true at all. When I found out that this all hadn't been true, it was a few months before her death. I could only visit her 2 more times... It was a shock seeing this woman who had babysitted us so many times when we were little and "mother" wanted to go in field service, sitting helplessly in her arm chair, not able to even speak more than 2 words... And after 8 long years she recognized me! :-((((
What's so bad about old ones? They were good enough to serve the Borg their whole life long, but when they've grown old noone cares for them anymore...
BTW, I'm still trying to find my grandpa... I'll send a letter with 10 EUR to the city where he used to live in order to find out where he moved...
-

Mar 3/03 Book Study - Intellectual dishonesty, or outright lie?
by artful inhowever, while reading through the wts book study information for the week of march 3/2003, i came across a historical claim regarding the wts and its announcing of 1914 as the year of christs' presence in kingly power.
answer (according to the information given in paragraph 14): jehovah has become king since christ's kingly presence began in 1914. the cry that god (via christ) had become king in 1914 has been announced to mankind by the watch tower society since 1919.
*** the watchtower, march 1, 1923, p. 67 ***.

Well, I think back then they made a distinction between the 'presence' and 'becoming king'.
They first believed Jesus was present from 1874 and would set up his kingdom on earth in 1914, after 40 years. When nothing happened in 1914 they explained it to be invisible to. Because both now was invisible it was convenient to put the two events together to 1914.
Even the "Last Days" had another beginning: 1799. Even this was put to 1914.
So, the Isaiah-book is technically correct, but it is manipulative rubbish. -

Thanks for your help, Matty.
BTW, Raab has strange ideas but he seems rather intelligent to me which makes his victims look dumber. He is also a successful song producer.
He has a daily show at 10:15 p.m. which is quite popular among the young people.
I wonder if he dares to come to a DC or if it is to controversial. Could also be a problem because it is in the summer months when the show could be on vacation.
At least he has a feature in his show called "Raab in Gefahr" ("Raab in Danger").
I am looking forward to this years DC. -

I found out that he has a board where you can make suggestions for his show.
Well, I was little vicious and thought: "Well, a District Convention would be a good place to go." and posted it to his board:

WTS TRIVIA: What was Watchtower's 1st reference to a "Jehovah's Witness"?
by Gamaliel insomeone asked simon recently if the name jehovah's witness was copyrighted (referring to part of this forum's name) and it reminded me of a note i had taken while reading old publications at bethel about a quarter-century ago.
here's the trivia question.. what (or when, or where) was the society's first specific reference in print to a "jehovah's witness?
for extra credit, answer any one of the following: which president of the society made the reference?
-
GermanXJW
Hmm, could be Russell referring to The Pyramid of Gizeh as "Jehovah's Witness".
The text is Isaiah 19:19.
