When we went to Nevada in the 60's for a DC I seem to recall my parents deciding to stay at a hotel instead of a "rooming work" hotel...

Does anyone remebr the "Rooming Work"
by exwhyzee inwhen a convention was to be held in your city and it was believed there weren't enough hotel rooms available or at least affordable ones, the witnesses living in that city were asked to go out into the territory and ask people if they had a room or rooms someone attending the convention could use.
you could report your time doing this as part of your ministry.
i could never bring myself (14 or 15) to do this....it just seemed too weird for a kid to go to a house and ask the householder for a room but many kids in the hall did this.

Oh, our hands are tied, Jesus didn't tell us to tell the police when crimes are committed in our church!

God, Gays & Evangelicals
by alice.in.wonderland inwhile participating on this website (one of the only three places i've discussed religion online) i asked a question:.
i've observed quite a few posts and comments here about religious intolerance toward gay men and women (i'm quoting), the terror and murder of homosexuals instigated by christians.
the religion i was raised in was in agreement with the bible based view that alternative lifestyles are immoral but they never instigated any hateful rhetoric toward gay men or women.

If I'm so intelligent how did I get drawn in to it all?
by Lozhasleft ini consider myself an intelligent woman...maybe not strong on the 'common sense' front, but academically i've done pretty well...so...how on earth did i not see through it all when i was studying in the beginning???.
i remember worrying about their 'sales pitching' styles and their arrogance of believing they had the 'truth' ...but still i got involved and became totally immersed in it all.
i feel like i sacrificied our whole family to them, who now shun me.. yesterday, my new son in law, he's a lawyer, asked me how i could have believed it wasnt a cult (topical word this week here) he said he didnt understand how i could have been persuaded to believe it all and trust them with so much and for so many years...... i feel ashamed of myself that i did and that i brought all this upon our family...anyone else relate?.

These decisions are rarely made at an intellectual level. The pitch is made to our gut-level dears of inadaquacy, and the scared kid part of us often responds.
Some of us get better and move on.

Paul was NOT gay, nor is their any indication that he was.
Not to be rude, you know I appreciate you PS - but really is there any indication that he was straight? Isn't it more accurate that the source is entirely mute on the subject and we get to inject our own biases onto him? Sure we can play the odds and say he was likely "straight" (as if we can apply our modern cultural definitions so broadly), but we can also interpret his body of work and say he was a Stoic aesthete who rejected sexuality from a philosophical point. Indeed, he said much more against straight sex and raising a family than qualified anti-gay statements.
Band on the Run is a stylistic triumph! Even Ram, as uneven as it may be, should be considered a highwater mark. But the magic of Paul in the group is transcendant. I hold him in high esteem, though, for captaining his own destiny and gladly eat up most of his output.

Can Jehovah's Witnesses accept blood transfusions in emergencies? WikiAnswers
by ThomasCovenant inwiki answers has the following answer.
only if the blood has been broken down into smaller parts that we call fractions.. firstly the 'faithful and discreet' slave are the 10 or so men in brooklyn that make up our organization's governing body.
these men, the 'faithful and discreet slave' class, tell us not to give or receive whole blood or four main parts of blood, based on their understanding of acts 15 and therefore we are obeying jesus' direct commands as explained in the following quote,.

Oh...it's abstain from blood except when it's pieces of blood...

I was 9. I "chose" to do it because it was expected that I would do it at some point, so what was the difference whether it was now or later? It never occured to me that I didn't have to - of course I had to.
Got through the pre-baptism questions fine. But, to tell the truth, I was shocked and perplexed at what I was told I was committing myself to at the ceremony itself - I thought I was committing myself to God, but the speaker at the assembly said something about committing myself to the organization? In my little, confined, young mind, I only committed myself to God.

What causes the authority complex the WTS has? Or even common JWs? What drives the need to control others?
by miseryloveselders inhttp://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/194364/1/witnesses-cant-take-the-heat.
in the thread above, several posters made the point that if xjws could walk away from the religion without losing their family and close friends, then they wouldn't even bother worrying about the wts afterwards.
they would simply move on in life.

Fear causes the complex. The sense of control gives the illusion of security.
There are two personalities in the world: those that have to control everything in order to feel secure, and those that are already secure in themselves regardless of what's going on in the outside world. Sometimes this difference is defined as "scarcity" and "abundance".
