Ha - how many times did I hear from the platform about "spare the rod and spoil the child"?
i was reading some of danny haszards web site last night.
i haven't been able to find out what happened to the parents of laree slack.
her parents larry and constance slack, jw's, beat their 12 yr old daughter with a 5 foot 1 inch thick electric cable.
unclear whether Slack was abiding by some religious mandate.

a few weeks back, in the midst of the haiti tragedy, much discussion took place in cyberland about the tolerance [or indeed the insistence on] suffering by a loving god.
the furor over haiti has settled a bit [as unfortunately most tragedy is wont to do far too quickly in the human mind], but this persistent matter continues to chew at my subconscience.
today i came across this:.
PSac: You again make me increase my respect for you.
While we may have different ideas on some things, you always present yourself with integrity and charm.
Cheers!
theism in its various forms has been since the beginning subjected to psychological analysis and treated as a phenomenon of the human mind.
perhaps it is time to turn the lens and examine the psychological reasons for atheism as well.
this approach should be especially inoffensive to many atheists/materialists since in their worldview, all phenomena are reducible to natural causes.
Freud is offensive to anyone who has never been dreaming of having sex with his mother or killing his father.
Ah, I hear Jim Morrison...
newayz...it's an interesting notion, but presupposes atheism = "strong atheism", or a positive assertion in the non-existence of God (it seems to not take aim at what I think of as agnosticism, or "weak atheism" - "I don't know if God exists" - perhaps that is intentional). And, to that limited constellation, it's a practical response.
Belief - any belief - is an artifact that has a reason for existing; any belief, from a psychological standpoint, is open to examination, often serves a developmental purpose, and should be discarded when its purpose has run its course and it starts to inhibit growth.
Another difficulty is that the author doesn't seem to define his "God", though of course it isn't hard to see where he's coming from - it just limits his argument to the asserted nonexistence of a particular view of God.
I wonder if these limitations reflect a controlling personality or a superficial one? That's a joke, son...
However, the lack of a belief (i.e., weak atheism) shouldn't demand a rationale. Sometimes I don't have to have an opinion.
In closing, one might take the next step (from a psychological point of view): which beliefs are holding back the individual from growth and satisfaction? Because, frankly, any belief is fine if it isn't causing intrapersonal difficulties.

Forget it - I mistook you for someone able to actually think clearly.
I hope that's over, AKJ!
Srsly, logic is not the issue. It's the premises. Logic is useless with flawed premises.
To present a God that is omniscent, omnipotent and caring, you have to introduce some qualified definitions and presume facts not in evidence.
a recurrent theme thrust forward by many theists is that morality is unattainable without belief in god.
the idea seems to pervade that thinking, that without god-restraint, fear of lost eternity, man would run seriously amok, freely plundering, murdering, and bringing general havoc upon the innocent.
might there be some logical points to counter such thinking.
Yes, it is immoral to displace your own responsibility and accountability onto "God".
Put on your big person pants and lay claim to your own ideas and beliefs as *your own*.
The moment you shirk your own responsibilities by giving credit to God or blaming Satan, you become an empty shell, a puppet, a parrot.
i'm listening to the "six screens of the watchtower" broadcast from october 25, 2008 [yeah, i know, i'm waaay behind...], discussing pedophilia... that broadcast caused me to look up the current status of 'pedophilia notification' in the u.s.a..... rebel8 posted a link sometime back that gave locations of pedophiles in one's (u.s.a.) neighborhood... that portion of the link is, unfortunately, not working right now.... i decided to check out my [old] site, http://www.nsopw.gov/core/offendersearchcriteria.aspx to see if it still functioned the same way.... again, unfortunately, that site is also no longer giving out maps of one's area.... but, as pointed out in rebel8's posted link, pedophiles tend to move around.
this was also mentioned in the six screens broadcast by a lady named "lilly".... the new versions of both sites simply allow one to input the name of someone suspected to be a pedophile... not as effective, imo, but perhaps the cost of updating the maps due to pedophiles' high mobility became prohibitive.. so, here's my suggestion... using the 'name' search function, check out every name in .
your congregation, starting with the elders!!!.
^ Er...no, it seems too reasonable, actually!
And I can certainly see the WTS taking the issue to the courts - a reliving of their heyday, eh?
my personal view on the nature of the soul and the afterlife are almost diametrically opposed to those of the wt.
below is my jw's friend justification for the wt belief that the dead are extinct and conscious of nothing.
please comment on the strength of the explanation he gives:.
Short answer:
Luke 16:22-23 (King James Version)
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

convicted pedophile implanted with a 'chip'
Can you imagine the black market for surgical procedures to remove or alter the chips?
Can you imagine the cost of administering and monitoring the implants?
This will work when everyone has a single-source identifying chip (what some fundies will call The Mark Of The Beast) with data hosted on a server that lists your credit, job, criminal histories...and then we'll still have black market and government ops people monkeying with the data (and the chips).
I'm seeing the headlines on lost laptops and illegal aliens with stolen chips as we speak...
check all adults having contact with your child
That's really the only answer, as incomplete a protection it may be...and even then you have elders and others that will keep things quiet (you won't know their true histories), and you'll have molesters that look completely normal.
Not that I'm against chipping 'em!
i just remembered when i was a kid and we would go to the assembly, it was fun because we got to buy new clothes and put extra effort into looking good.
when we would get there you could save your seats and even save some for your friends, then go off looking for them.. i used to love our circuit assembly because of the food.
it was at the assembly hall and there was a big kitchen, some of my favourite brothers worked in that kitchen, sometimes i was allowed to go in and help.
My dad built props and acted in a few dramas in Southern California in the 60's. The rehearsals and seeing the production of sound synchronization and building public address systems (my dad built PAs for assemblies and Halls) - that was interesting.
We travelled to Las Vegas when a couple blocks from downtown was still just dust. The trip out was an interesting drive, the stay was nights of agony in a fold-up bed in a room that reeked of cigarettes, days of sheer boredom.
I guess it was the International at San Francisco's Candelstick Park that was particularly memorable for the searing sun, the biting wind, the days in the bleachers, the jackovs that stole our seats that one day, the incessant droning of speaker after speaker telling us how great we were and how evil everyone else was...the only thing of interest I recall on that one was the glossy printed program and the repeated echoes from the insanely designed sound (which my dad did not contribute to).
After the International, the circuit and even district assemblies we attended throughout the 70's were poor reflections. Then the rules on food got tightened up - manna would have been infinitely superior.
The highlight of my assembly career: seeing The Ten Commandments in a specially rented theater in the mid-60's in LA. That was cool.
