Would've been cooler if it was the "I Had a Dream" speech or the "Gettysburg Address"..

Wow. That's a great read. I'll pass it along to all my conservative, religious friends.

How do you handle JW encounters?
by Girlie inso this past saturday, i stopped over at my parents' home to take care of some business.
as my brother dropped me off in front of the house, lo and behold, the witnesses from my previous congregation were parked right in front of my parents' home.
damn..... they were in a car group working a frequent rv who lives next door to my folks.

Fortunately because I moved out of state after I left the religion, I no longer have chance encounters with them. Since the move they regularly leave tracks on the door, but I haven't had the chance to ever speak with one.
Back home I would run across Witnesses and most would be cordial, they ask about my folks. I don't recall ever being completely, obviously shunned or anything.

Let me tell you, it is awesome for my creativity, it helps me in my work, it helps me get good ideas.
I write. I brainstorm. I look for subtle interconnections, parallels. I try to build compelling, entertaining, stories.
It makes me more productive.
Some people have similar effects with LSD.

Well, I told my mom today that I haven't been to a meeting in 5 months plus I need some advise for next Saturday
by doublelife inme and my mom made plans to see each other today so this morning she called me and said she was already in my area and wanted to know where to meet up.
i told her that i wasn't ready yet so to come to my apartment first.
i said that me and my husband are still in our pjs and she gasped and ask, "you didn't go to the meeting today?

So how can I not meet with him now?
I would do as wobble suggested. Ask one question and only give little resistance. Then drop it and enjoy the visit as uncle and niece.
I know you are thinking right now that we are going overboard, but I can speak from experience. If your mother is willing to tattle on your husband, then she might just do the same to try to "help" you. My family and I used to be super close and now the only contact I have is the occasional phone call every few months to make sure I am still breathing.

"Parasitic" is a stronger word than I would use, but I tend to agree with moshe. So I'll repeat:
[...] we will find out just how productive they are, how safe of the drivers they are, how good of a job your pot smoking doctors and dentists do, how law abiding the pot smoking citizens are, etc. [...] they don't pull the same equal load in society as non-pot smokers, but they like to enjoy the same benefits and get high, too.
That being said, if cigs and alcohol are legal then marijuana should be as well. I do not believe it is more dangerous. Also, it's criminalization was based on racism not because of it's side effects.

Actually.. I'm not. I'm a square. Would you like to hear my argument against marijuana use other than for medicinal purposes?

Understanding JW Recruiting Concepts Can Help Others To Leave
by AllTimeJeff inunderstanding jw recruiting concepts can help others to leave.
when i first left jehovah's witnesses (jw's), i was somewhat amused at the sheer amount of anti jw websites out there.
while websites like freeminds.org and jwfacts.com are great, (non hysterical sites that stress fact and presentation over emotional responses), there are at least 5 times as many other sites that act as if you should treat a jw at your door like you would a spreader of the ebola virus.. i don't disagree with the fact that jw's are somewhat dangerous and usually go for the low hanging fruit.

ATJ-
Very, very good post.
subliminal pics in Watchtowers? Satan worship at Bethel? Get real....) in an effort to get current members to quit, it makes me laugh
Hysterics don't work. Reasoned facts do. Innuendo's and sensationalism doesn't work.
I've always thought this... but it can be fun.
For the most part I am assuming that you were addressing your comments about new recruits. Because re:
Real life stories chronicling the mistreatment, neglect, incompetence, and sometimes criminal neglect (where pedophiles are concerned) are enough to loosen the mind, so that honest hearted JW's will feel they have permission to defy the GB, and research JW's on their own.
I don't feel the above statement is true of most die hard JWs. "Real life stories" from apostates are seen as lies. For long timers I do think you have to attack the dogma.
