It does make you wonder why they do not simply ban high school as well as college. After all, since it is "high" school, isn't it "higher education" also?

The Future of the Watchtower Society and the Internet
by DT init seems that the watchtower society was very ill prepared for the advent of the internet.
perhaps, some of the governing body thought the end would come before it became a big problem.
now it is a big problem and is only going to get worse.

I wonder if the WTBTS will eventually have to give in to allowing the JW's to free use of the Internet. In the end, the Internet is the 21st century Guttenburg Press. As usual the GB is behaving as angry bishops shouting against technological advance as satanic and threatening.
It strikes me that the heyday of the JW's was between 1945-1975. They seem to want to return to a time in which people could not communicate so easily. I see that many of the older GB members are still stuck in the mid-20th century. They cannot break loose of that time period.
The future is against them UNLESS they embrace change both internal and external. Otherwise, the slow but certain extinction is coming.

Approaching the Attorney General of New York?
by nomoreguilt indo you suppose, that if there were a concerted effort by enough people, that the ag of new york state could compel the wtbts to divulge the names of all the child molesters that are in their files??.
do you think that enough pressure could be placed on the society in order to diminish their stature with the state?
imagine the impact that just the suggestion of such a move would make on brooklyn....... my thoughts......any others????.

I don't think that this might work. Andrew Cuomo is the AG of New York. I believe he is Catholic as is his father, former Governor Mario Cuomo. Think about how this might play out:
1) The AG announces an investigation of JW's specifically with regard to concealing the database.
2) The JW's respond in two ways. They sue the AG's office for violation of 1st Amendment rights (selective prosecution of a religious organization). They also begin a public information campaign to align themselves with other religious bodies to demand that the government not interfere with the internal working of religious groups. (In other words, they begin to portray themselves as victims rather than willing co-conspirators of child abuse.)
3) Catholic groups and others in NY begin to pressure this AG to drop the investigation. AG's poll numbers begin to drop.
4) The AG drops the investigation. JW's win a "moral" victory for religious rights and strengthen their hand against further disclosure.
Just a thought.

What is the WTs latest stand on education/college?
by cyber-sista inmy jw niece quit college a short time ago and didn't finish her degree, which she seems very excited about and took on a menial job, which she doesn't too happy about, according to my father.
my father (not a jw) is wondering what happened and if it is possibly something "the church" is now promoting.
when my daughter went to a 2 year college i had some negative comments from those in the congo.

What is interesting is that the WTBTS has paid for several Bethelites to go to college. The WTBTS has paid for several lawyers in Canada (Shane Brady, Glen Howe) to go to law school according to a Canadian secular weekly magazine. There are internet rumors that a child of a Governing Body member has gone to Columbia law school. There are alot of confirmed stories that the WTBTS has paid for Bethelites to get degrees in all sorts of fields.
Think about it: They discourage higher education among the rank and file, but they use the donations of the rank and file to pay for college for the upper echelon of the WTBTS. I am not sure what to call this practice but I would not call it consistent.

I am attaching a link that the Pew Foundation did on American religions. http://religions.pewforum.org/reports
Among the findings are:
-That the JWs are among the least educated groups among American religions. Nearly 1/3 have less than a high school diploma and only 9% have a college degree or more.
-That JWs are among the poorest groups of all American religions, which is a strong correlation with the low education stats.
-That JWs have the lowest retention rates among all American religions, meaning that only 37% of people born as JWs continue to be JWs as adults.
I think that the WTBTS is aware of all of this. They have to drive out the bright people in order to maintain control of the old, the weak and the less able.
I also think that the retention rate is a sign that young people are beginning to resist the heavy handed declarations from the WTBTS. This worries them since the entire notion of "organization" requires blind and unquestioning obedience. People with brains engage in "independent thinking" and that is a great danger to the WTBTS. Totalitarianism (religious or otherwise) outlaws thoughts as well as actions. You can only learn what you are allowed to learn. You cannot question the guidance of the dear leaders unless you are willing to face the threat of social "death" through shunnng.
Tell your relative to head back to school and take the hits from the JWs. When she is done with her education, the JWs will suddenly befriend her because she will have the kind of expertise they need. She will be better paid, better educated and more satisfied with her life.

It is a shame that there is probably some kind of religious exemption written into the law (or decided through case law) but the over-40 group would normally be protected under the ADEA and the disabled group would be protected under the ADA. I wish someone would file an employment discrimination claim to test the waters.

About that April 2008 Kool-Aid
by WTWizard ini read the kool-aid scan of april 2008, and sure enough the first article is about "valueless things".
i thought they were going to all but ban entertainment.
what they did do was tell people that relaxation and fun have their place, but compared it to dessert.

Just read paragraghs 9 and 10 of the scan about college. Not a total ban but a strongly worded discouragement. They actually say that college can induce young people with "harmful propaganda." Too funny!

Alarming statement in today's study article in WT...
by Mickey mouse inparagraph 15: "as we get nearer to the outbreak of the great tribulation, we may well receive some detailed instructions.
our safe journey through those troublesome days will depend on our keeping in step with other loyal servants of jehovah.
" this in the context of a wt discussing the israelites' exodus from egypt and how jehovah had them into a position where there seemed "no way out".

I think that many of them are far too cynical to "off themselves" i.e. the Heaven's Gate cult.
It may be that the paragraph was referencing some of the doctrinal and organizational changes rumored to be in the pipeline shortly. If some of the elders lose favored positions due to these changes, there would be some resentment. This might just be a shot across the bow.
Then again, I have been fooled before.
