Seriously though, I don't disagree with you, but I have a feeling that the only thing that
kind of articulate acidity accomplishes it to make us feel happily vented. Scorn, though
perhaps justified, often only serves to cement a believer's fundamentalism.

I am sympathetic to that argument, which is why I reserve my scorn only for the most ignorant and closed minded of fundamentalists, with whom reasoning seems not to be an option. I have no sympathy for someone that in another thread called for atheists to be eradicated from universities "like the Nazi's". Ever since then whenever I see Perry's avatar I can't help but imagine him in clerical robes in the middle ages, pompously sentencing Galileo to house arrest for his godless science. He seems to be of that ilk.

On the other hand, I have had many some lively discussions with others that are clearly devout, such as Burn, yet are also intelligent and reasonable people. In those instances, I have done my best to keep the acidity to a minimum. Besides, sometimes a little venting is necessary .

Honestly, with your admitted (and painfully obvious) lack of even basic scientific knowledge, I wonder about your arrogance in arguing vehemently about something you know virtually nothing about. It seems the only one that thinks you are making any sort of point is you yourself. Honestly, you should be embarrased to be advancing these arguments from ignorance, and if you understood the subjects you are speaking of, you would be.

Wow! This thread just won't die! I just want to make a small point about the "random" aspect of evolution; that is: mutations are random, natural selction is not. Natural selection is the mechanism by which advantageous mutations are passed on and disadvantageous ones are not, from amongst all of the random mutations that occur. This is a large part of what Darwin discovered.

I actually wasn't posting this for your benefit, as you are quite clearly an idiot, and I don't expect you to understand anything about the subjects I'm discussing. I was actually addressing the more rational creationists, the ones able to understand a coherent argument. However, I never said random events never occur, in fact they occur billions, if not trillions or more, times a day.

Auldsoul, I realize this is a fact you are unfamiliar with, so perhaps you missed this from my original post:

The odds against two creatures having the same ERV insertion pattern just by chance is so high as to make it impossible: one in ten to the hundredth power.

Even if two seperate species are susceptible to the same ERV, since the insertion points are random, and the mutations the ERVs go through are random, the odds against even one being identicle simply by chance is a higher number than the number of grains of sand on the Earth. The odds of multiple identicle insertion points, of identicle ERVs, with identicle mutations, simply occuring randomly, is a number so high that it is beyond human comprehension. No one would suggest such a random event based solely on the evidence.

Auldsoul - "What ERV do the hippo and the whale share in common?" I don't believe either genome has been sequenced yet. However, when they are, there is every reason to believe they will follow the same pattern of every other creature that has been sequenced, and will have several in common. I'm not sure I understand your point. Are you saying that you concede that human and chimps share a common ancestor, but you absolutely draw the line at whales and hippos?
