More importantly, what you need is a Legal Counsel who will take on your case for a payment after the trial, appeals and conclusion.
But therein lies the major problem in Canada and with your case unlike the USA. One is usually toast if the plantiff doesn't have the upfront legal costs - which usually run into hundreds of thousands of legal dollars - for disclosure, motions, trials, research, hearings, leave to appeals and appeals. And unfortuately in Canada there are few lawyers who are willing to work upfront for free in a case to be paid at the end.
Fighting in the Courts in Canada is a struggle that usually bankrupts a person and thus, there are not as many suits in Canada as there are down in the United States. In a sick kinda way, the court system in canada is for the rich or for a cause that somebody with some money can support.
My best recommendation to you .... if you have not already done so .... is send a portfolio of the case around to some of the legal firms in Alberta to see if anyone will pick up the case up front for free with payment at the end if you win. Of course you will have to analyze the new lawyer to see if they are up to the job since this is one case that should not be lost and this case is complex to say the least. No doubt you will need a firm that not only has a good trial/research Counsel but also has Counsel that knows the ins and outs of the Appeal Court system - which is a speciality all on to itself.
I wish I could wave my magic stick and help out Lawrence. But that is the best advice I can offer right now.

plasma exchange in my grandson
by starfirern` into liberal elder: my 10yr grandson has guillan-barre' syndrome and is in icu on a ventilator and the doctors want to do a plasma exhange on him to help the disease to be treated and for him to get well.
it is similar to dialysis and would not require a transfusion.
it is the only way to treat this horrible disease and make him well(hopefully) and to lessen any possible long term effects as this is his 3rd bout in 7 yrs.

I believe what the judge tossed were the majority of claims against the parties, he didn't toss the big money claims though. The big money claims were the ones being sought on behalf of his daughter's estate. The majority of the money is still being pursued, but on fewer total claims.
The way the article reads one could be misled into thinking that the dollar amount being sought is now insignificant. That is not the case. They initially filed claims for everything under the sun (to see what would stick?) and the judge threw out most of them.
I believe Lawrence's counsel will be appealing according to the Calgary paper. I also think in the same article that Lawrence's counsel has to first show the Lawyers acted wrongly and then they are entitled to go after the WTS.
As I said in a previous thread, I still say there is an arguement to be made of the teaching of the belief. I truly think they are insincere about their belief since they are not abstaining from blood.
The Court has not released the decision on the Internet yet. It should be along this week or next and we can all read what the Judge had to say.
They are going to be appealing this one to the cows come home.

It's too bad Counsel did not argue about how sincere the Religion is in its blood doctrine.Anyone who says they abstain from blood yet allows for 100 percent of blood to be taken in should be tested on whether they actually believe in their doctrine honestly and in good faith. If they are insincere in their belief, then they have no protection under article 2(a) of the Charter. Another example would be lookin at the allowance for taking in white blood cells but also saying they are banned. I could go on and on.
Its not about whether the faith is true or not. It's about whether, based on the evidence, they actually believe in what they are teaching.

For those interested in reading the 1990 Malette decision that His Honour discusses please travel to this web link:
http://medlawsociety.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/malettevshulman.htm
I think if we had Kerry's article and AJWRB.org in 1990, I wonder if the Malette decision would have had a different outcome since we actually know JWs do not abstain from blood.
