I guess I was a really naive witness. I really didn't think any had sex before marriage except those that got DF'ed or reproved beforehand. I did know one couple who later "bragged" that they did everything but sex before marriage. I just can't believe people wouldn't be so guilt ridden that they wouldn't confess. Why stay in the organization with all the rules if you are going to break them and not confess? What is the point? Just leave. But, then that is a little simplistic in light of the shunning.... I just would have felt like if I didn't confess, there would be no way I would survive the big A.
I was publicly reproved before I left the organization. I couldn't handle the guilt. However, my reproof was not over a sexual matter.

sex before marriage in the borg
by heyfea in(i don't know if i posted this already, since i got errors every time i tried) .
do you think that a lot of engaged jws have sex before getting married?
i think so, only a few fall into the guilt trip after they're married, and ultimately confess.

Just a note: Take the State Department travel sheets with a grain of salt. They always scare the crap outta me. The reality is *usually* quite a bit tamer. Imagine reading the city papers of big cities in the US without any knowledge of real life there...I wouldn't step out my door. LOL. Those travel sheets do have good info, but realize their intent...to be very cautious with US citizens.

I agree that it would depend on the area. But, generally, I would say it is pretty safe. (Off the top of my head, I would say avoid Kashmir and be cautious in the state of Bihar.) I spent several months all over India myself, and felt quite safe. I think the US is a particularly dangerous place really (especially our big cities), so compared to that, many other countries are surprisingly safe. As long as he has a good head on his shoulders and takes normal precautions, I think it would be an awesome experience. India is unique and has a lot to offer. He will be a changed man with greatly opened eyes! How exciting!

No Girls Scout Cookies for you!
by independent_tre ineven though, i was raised in a witness home, i never remember hearing that girl scout cookies were a no-no.
and even though i've only been baptized for a few years, i don't remember any specific admonishment of these sweet treats.
but recently at work a jdub coworker made it a point to remind me that jw's do not buy or eat girl scout cookies.

"In my addled memory, Girl/Boy Scouts were alllllllllllllll wrong, so no way would we support them. I never once tasted the delectable "Samoa" until a couple of years ago. Now I know they are from the devil."
This was definitely my experience too. It was one of the rebellious things I did went I stopped going to meetings! I bought thin mints. I, too, now know what all the fuss is about.
It is funny to me that other witnesses didn't have that prohibition. I didn't know any witnesses who ate girl scout cookies, and I surely would have judged them had I known any who did. LOL. I guess I can just chalk it up to the same reasoning that told us Smurfs were evil!

Appendix on DF in New Book released at Convention 2008
by InquiryMan insome scans have been made regarding blood and birthdays in the new book that was released at this year s conventions.
as could be seen from the index of the book, there is an appendix on the topic of disfellowshipping.
this as a topic that definitely concerns quite a few of this board.

Thanks NestleBoy. It looks like things are getting pretty strict again. Really harsh regarding family members living outside of the home, and extending even a "hello" greeting to a DF'ed person.

(My family had no "male" witnesses in it, so I didn't have any direct experience with the various "privileges" available to men. And, I left so long ago, it seems like I forgot quite a bit!) Thanks!

Yep. Because I've gone to college, and none of my witness school friends did. I don't think college inherently makes one smarter, but it certainly encourages you to look more critically at issues. And, for me at least, it did make me smarter than I was. I definitely feel more well rounded.
Also, I'm think I have more street smarts like Casper said (although I was a "born in"). When you are afraid to do so much as a witness (i.e., brothers giving the example of the young woman who wanted to see what having a drink in a bar was like only to be drugged and assaulted), it really closes you off from reality. Obviously! -

Observations about dubs as people...
by Princess Daisy Boo ini was thinking back on some of the people i knew growing up, as well as my own family - many of whom are dubs... tell me what your own experiences are of these kind of people, did you notice a large prevalence of these types of people in the congs you attended:.
1. health nuts: into all sorts of alternative health theories like iridology, reflexology, homeopathy etc?
2. get rich quick folk: always getting involved in this scheme or that, this business or that - especially pyramid type things?.

So, that is a thought. Maybe people who are into homeopathy and/or pyramid schemes are drawn to the witnesses? I was thinking of it the other way around....that witnesses are drawn to it.....Interesting. Makes sense with some of the people I know....
