If your parents were jews or muslims would you respect there right to living by their faith, has familiarity bred contempt in many of the cases I read about?

I would absolutely respect their beliefs.

However, I would absolutely expect similar respect in return.

There's an element coming through, as you'd expect with a Jehovah's Witness, that their beliefs, opinion, consciences are to be respected as the only ones that matter.

Yes, it's my father's right to exercise his belief, conscience and opinion that he did not wish to babysit for my wife and I so that we good go to a concert where the theme was offering praise and honour to Christ.

However, for JWs - as embodied by our local JW Reniaa - it's not acceptable for a non-JW to exercise their beliefs, opinion, conscience. So, if I were to forbid my parents to ever take any of my 3 children to a meeting in a Kingdom Hall (as I have done), that's deemed not acceptable by JWs and should lead to some sort of reciprocal action, such as not babysitting for us when we wish to attend Praise Gathering (did I mention how good and uplifting it was? My 9 year old son is walking on air this morning).

I'm no expert, but that sounds like cause and effect.

You see, Jehovah's Witnesses love cause and effect;

If you don't go out in the door-to-door ministry to a sufficient time quota, you don't get to be a mic handler
If you don't say the right things to the CoBE often enough, you won't be recommend for appointment
If you choose to leave the teachings of the Governing Body, you're cut off from your JW family and friends

However, I believe that JWs should be aware that these principles will be flipped and pointed back at them;

If you choose to shun your family members it's unlikely they'll be drawn to return to the Kingdom Hall
If you choose to shun your sister in front of your daughter, your daughter will likely struggle to understand the "love" that's spoken of so often in the Kingdom Hall
If you put your Watch Tower conscience before spending time with your grandchildren, it's unlikely you'll be asked to babysit very often

Have you made any restrictions on your parents have you told them they are not allowed to take your kids to meetings while babysitting?

This is hilarious. You need to remember, Reniaa, my children are my children, they aren't my parent's. Therefore it's within my rights to prohibit my children being taken places I do not regard as being safe.

Aren't meetings of Jehovah's Witnesses safe?

I'd suggest that any place where children are exposed to sexually explicit talks, graphic descriptions of violent slaughters and the promotion of imperfect men to the role of mediator is not a safe place.

But that's my opinion and it's my right as the father of my children to institute certain restrictions upon those who act as their guardian in my absence.

RENIAA Would you feel alright about this if the situation was reversed? What if your parents refused to babysit your kids because you were asked to a Jehovahs Witness social event, purely because they don't agree with JWs and what they teach?

Good question. I can't speak for Reniaa, but I know JWs who would view it as religious persecution.

grandparents have to realize also what goes around for the comes around.

This is an excellent point. I've tried to get my parents to see this, that what they reap, they will sow. If they are continually disrespectful to me, the father of their grandchildren, there will come a time when my children will lose respect to for them.

For example, we didn't hide from our oldest son that it was his JW grandmother who didn't want us at the wedding reception yesterday. Why should we keep this from him or let him think somehow we - or worse, he - was to blame?

I think the JWs need to realise their actions come with consequencies. As we have been told often, you knew what to expect when you left...

During my brief time attending a church (Holy Trinity Brompton, Knightsbridge), the music was just incredible - it made me very emotional and was a real credit to the people involved - I remember being bowled over by the professionalism of it. Sounds like you'll have a good time PP. If we were around I'd babysit for you!!!

Hark at you! HTB! No ordinary wee church for sweat pea, eh?

Yeah, the music is usually pretty good in church. Quite against who I once was, I now play the guitar in the praise band at our church. As Iknowall, Ninja and Hobo Ken can attest to, this isn't completely the opposite of what JWs would expect of me.

I enjoy the sound of praising God through music. It's sort of been hardwired into us, I think, and is never fulfilled with any of the Kingdom Songs.

Thanks for the offer of babysitting, btw, we may take you up on that sometime!
