Progressive Rock Music?

i place a question mark on the thread title as i have never read a definition of this genre of rock music that seemed to fit the bill.

what is generally agreed is that it is a european musical phenomena that began in the late 60's and peaked in popularity in the early 70's though it has always had an audience and one which seems to be growing in popularity again.. my own definition is one that suggests: 'music in which the musicians can move from jazz to rock to pop to classical and back again with equal ease'.

i am sure that simplifies things.

Here are a couple more.

It is no secret that the brain behind Cream was Jack Bruce, an incredibly inspiring musician and songwriter. Here he is singing 'Smiles And Grins'. John Marshall on drums (from Soft machine).

Focus were a band worthy of a reckoning. The only thing that could mar the musical virtuosity of its founders Jan Ackerman and Thijis Van Leer was personality conflicts, and it did. They fought like cornered rats in a cathouse. I remember being in Amsterdam is the early 70's and decided to catch their gig. I was having a drink beforehand in a bar near the venue when the band came in minus Ackerman who had walked out on the band an hour before the show. Van Leer had a welt on his head, left as a 'goodbye' by Ackerman. Philp Catherine was with them and they were standing around the jukebox, he with guitar strapped on, feeding the juke box and listening to 'Round Goes The Gossip' again and again...lol. This was his practice session. I knew Philip a little and got a backstage pass, his legs were visibly shaking as he stumbled on stage. Ackerman is a tough act to follow at the best of times.

Yes, Real One made mention of this in an earlier post. I asked a question of both himself and Perry as to whether they also accept this Catholic Priest to be correct in embracing evolution. A long silence has ensued, which is typical of the partisan away Fundamentalist loonies approach the matter of what is true and what is not.

I have read some very amusing 'explanations' by Creationists as to why humans get 'goosebumps'. Perhaps you can enlighten us with your piercing logic as to why this happens.

Yes, it is ironic that the Priest who claims to have proved by mathematics, at least circumstantially, that God exists also believes in evolution. Are you and Perry also willing to acknowledge his belief in evolution, or is he half-demonized?

I find myself simultaneously having to defend evolution from nutjobs on one end of the spectrum, and demonstrate its failed application while simultaneouly and verbosely asserting its inherent benigness to idiots on the other!

Burn, I applaud your attempts to reigh in your fellow Christian, Perry Parrot, though your chances of success are minimal. However, you should check your posts more carefully before you hit enter as you have just on the past three pages made six logical fallacy errors and insulted science by your lack of knowledge of the fundamental laws of thermodynamics. I know you will not accept this, I do not expect you to. I just wanted to put this on the record for future use. ;)

Procol Harum - Shine On Brightly

Now, there is band to have pity on. Though I remember sneering at them for their 'poppiness' in my more austere years ;), I have to say they were a very underrated band. 'Salty Dog' is an excellent album.

I enjoy soft machine too. What about Wishbone Ash ? They were a bit folky

Yes, I remember them well. I was very good friends with all the Powell family, but lost track with them over the years. Argus was a worthy album, though I could never really get into them. When Upton and Turner were looking for a guitarist, two answered the ad, Andy and Ted Turner. They could not choose between the two so they took them both on hence the line-up. It has to be a very daunting proposition for a guitarist to be vying for space onstage, but they managed it well.

Most of the Soft Machine, Caravan, Gong, Egg, Kevin Ayers, Bob Wyatt, Camel etc all matriculated from the same University - Canterbury and most shared the same music teachers.

Here is Alan Holdsworth with the Soft Machine in the early 70's playing a track from the 'Bundles' album. I think you might enjoy it, the solo is at the end so please be pateint. ;)
