I know what you mean. I always remember the stories of a JW being held in a room while their father or mother was in the next room being beaten and tortured. They were made to listen to the beating in order to weaken their faith. That always terrified me!! If my mother or father were being beaten, there is NOTHING I wouldn't do to make it stop!!

encouraging JW "nighmare" stories
by lancelink inrecently i was thinking back over the years, and thought about the horrible stories the watchtower published hoping that.
the rank and file would be encouraged, or think of ways to improve their own life.. instead of a heartwarming, or upbuilding story, it was something found in the ultimate gloom story.. the worst i can remember was back in the early 1980's, my oldest son was just born, and in some magazine / book there was a story about a. sister who was being persecuted.. she also had just given birth, and the persons who were doing the persecuting had the mother locked, or tied up and had the baby lay right outside of her reach.. all she had to do was renounce her faith, and the baby would be returned to her.. i don't remember how the story ended, but that just scared the s**t out of my wife and i. no way could i put a religion above the life of my child in that situation.. but i do remember the moral of the story was for us to "build up our spirituality" because things like this will happen soon.. good grief, this was 25 years ago, and it really made a mark on me for years.
yet i always knew that religion would be #2 in a situation like that.. and for years i felt unworthy because i did not have the correct mindset crafted by the wt society regarding this type of situation.. anyone else have a personal experience like this ?

I want to do volunteer work - this is classic
by heybaby init has always bothered my how witnesses are discouraged from doing volunteer work because "preaching to them about the truth is the best thing we can do!
" ok, yeah, whatever.
it's true that the bible talks about preaching as being important for christians, but that's far from being the only thing that christians are encouraged to do for their fellow humans.

sir82: I've heard that one a million times. It makes me sick also!!
I'd really like to do something for a women's shelter or a shelter for abused kids. I can relate to that. My hard-core JW father saw nothing wrong with beating the SHIT out of us, then getting on the stage to give a nice spiritual talk at the TMS. Lovely isn't it?!

It's true that the Bible talks about preaching as being important for Christians, but that's FAR from being the only thing that Christians are encouraged to do for their fellow humans. Doesn't the Bible say that "the form of worship that is clean and undefiled" is to "look after orphans and widows in their tribulation"? Yes it does! I always get the same old answer when I mention volunteering: "they can't solve the world's problems, only Jehovah can." Ok, so here's my beef with that. NOBODY is talking about solving the problems of the entire world; I'm just talking about doing what is within my power to help those that I can. It's like saying to someone with the flu "these pills won't cure the flu, they'll just ease the symptoms, so it's not worth taking them." That's freakin' ridiculous!! The flu will get cured in it's own time, but nobody would rightly object to getting a bit of relief while you're waiting for it to happen!! Am I right?! It's just so frustrating. There was a sign in a shop near my house that was asking for clothes to be donated to a shelter for victims of domestic abuse. I went home and told my husband that I wanted to get some clothes together, and he got this look on his face as if I'd told him I wanted to start smoking crack. He was shocked and against it!! Then it was that whole crap about "not solving the world's problems." ANYWAY, that having been said, I really want to look up volunteer opportunities in my local area. Any ideas, thoughts, etc etc?

I completely agree!! My husband and I married when I was 18 and he was 21. He's a great guy and we've made it work, but most of our success has come more recently as I've stopped attending meetings and finally starting acting like a normal person - not a Witness robot!! Good luck!!

So anyway, all previous attempts to speak with my husband about my doubts have ended up in a HUGE fight, with him asserting that somehow I'm not in my right mind. But last week, I delicately brought it up again, and surprisingly his reaction wasn't all that bad. He actually listened!! Could there be hope??? -

About time to "Batten Down the Hatches"
by AK - Jeff inmy wife has been out of work now for over a year.
she is tail-ending her unemployment very soon.. our county is experiencing close to the worse rates of unemployment in the country right now [ elkart, indiana - obama's economic poster child ] is just 50 miles away.
our county has a rate nearly equal to theirs.

I know this sounds goofy, but maybe she can start selling Avon or something. Just trying to help. I'm looking for work also. Thank goodness my husband has a pretty good paying job, but still, it's tough!!! Good luck!!
