  Overlapping gen teaching- Help?

  hi friends,.

  can someone please help explain to me the overlapping generations teaching?

  i have not been able to grasp this one or what it even applies to?

  In my opinion WT has benefited from what's known as cognitive disfluency (i.e. The harder you have to think to understand a concept or idea, the more it sticks to you).

  So concepts as the times of gentiles, 2,520 years, and from there 1914, the generation, etc. take so much to understand and assimilate, they end up sticking you; by the time you 'master it' and are able to explain it to others, it becomes deeply ingrained, no matter how little sense it really makes.

  At the same time, and by the same token, changing the 'Generation' understanding so many times in such a brief period becomes an attack, an undermining of a core belief of many. In other words, they spent 70+ decades instilling in us the 1914 generation teaching, and now they are taking it away. This is not sitting well with many JWs.

  Add to that how stupid and arbitrary the 'overlapping generation' teaching is...

  Why would there be 'overlapping' generation in the extended (or second) fulfillment of the prophecy, when that was not the case in the initial fulfillment.

  I mean, when Jesus said "THIS generation shall not pass...", well, 37 years later the prophecy was fulfilled; within the time frame of 'this' generation'. Simple and clean.

  Could it be, let's say, there is no second fulfillment?

  Read it yesterday. I find it funny they think a campaign inviting people to weekend meetings will result in a significant increase in attendance. Enough -they think- to merit using only the most capable speakers during that month.

  Implied it is that the rest of the year we are left with terrible, boring talks full of nonsense and derision for 'worldly' people.

  If lucky, maybe some active non-attending JWs will show up for a meeting or two.

  Also underlying is how worried they are about low attendance.

  Elders & Ex Elders

  i have a question.....if two jw have sex and only one of them goes to the eldurrs and confesses.....do they both get busted?

  or does the boe need a confession from both people.?

  if one of em denies it happened will that person still get df'd?.

  Rule is: Confession or two witnesses.

  Since he's not confessing, and there's only one witness (the accuser), he's off the hook.

  I know of several cases where this has happened. And in many instances I'm damn sure the denier actually did it.

  So there you have a very bad mix of a highly punitive system and flawed 'evidence'

  Walking a thin line - Resigning Elder

  warning of a long boring post ahead.

  i feel like i need to vent my story out, as i feel quite helpless at the moment.. i'm 31 year old, married, father of toddler with another one on the way, due later this month.

  i've been serving as elder for about 4 years now in a south florida congregation.

  so i guess baptism is no longer the "mark for survival".. as a matter of fact, that key aspect of the 'old light' is not even acknowledged in this article.. they are just publishing new understanding without even bothering to explain the full extent of the change, hoping nobody will remember how it was... and they may be right about that..

  i have been reading comments on jvn, huffington, san jose mercury, nbc, and other sources.

  From rank & file perspective: They are not familiar with society's policy whatsoever. Most publishers don't know about procedures. You guys, here on this site, know much more. So, all they see is a judge ruled against the 'organization' and of course their take is that it was unfair, a move by Satan, and that the org shall be vindicated down the road. That's what they've been taught, that's what it's easier to think.

  Elders are a different story. Many don't have a clue. Just yesterday I was commenting the case with a fellow elder (long time serving) and at one point he even asked me "what are society's instructions right now for molestation cases".

  So the vast majority of JW’s will think what they’ve been trained to think: Satan controls the whole world, and it’s against us. We are always right and we will prevail in the end.

  However, a small yet growing group keeps questioning –among other things- the instruction regarding not informing the authorities and the ‘two-witness’ rule.

  your elders and ministerial servants are just men, not prophets, not appointed by holy spirit, they are human beings like you.. you attribute or impute some quality to us that does not exist, we are not any close to god than you are.

  the training we received did not prepare us for the kinds of situations we were thrown into.

  We don't. Elders (or any other human) do not have special spiritual powers. An elder -at best- is a man with some perspective, a bit of insight. A friend, if you will, that will listen to you and give you advise to the best of his abilities.

  Before you jump to tell me most elders are not like that, and do believe they have spiritual super-powers, and god-given authoritiy to rule on other people's lifes, I already know that. You are right. And the minute an elder starts to think like that, he is lost for the people he's supossed to be serving and becomes just another 'company man'.

  That critizising elders is going against the HS, is bull crap. If that was true, everybody would be guilty of the unforgivable sin.
