He is a POS.
He was the boss. He created a toxic work environment. And it was Sexual Harrassment.
Like Polanski, many of you are sitting back, saying "Big deal. He's funny. It isn't my business."
What if it happened to your daughter or wife? What if your daughter or wife thought that her job depended upon having sex with the boss to keep her job or get a promotion? (As happens every f-ing day)
NOW, who no doubt agrees with all of Letterman's opinions, has put up a statement which pretty much sums up *my* position:
The Latest Letterman Controversy Raises Workplace Issues for Women
Statement of NOW President Terry O'Neill
October 6, 2009
Recent developments in the David Letterman extortion controversy have raised serious issues about the abuse of power leading to an inappropriate, if not hostile, workplace environment for women and employees. In the case of Letterman, he is a multi-million dollar host of one of the most popular late-night shows; in that role, he wields the ultimate authority as to who gets hired, who gets fired, who gets raises, who advances, and who does entry-level tasks among the Late Show employees. As "the boss," he is responsible for setting the tone for his entire workplace -- and he did that with sex. In any work environment, this places all employees -- including employees who happen to be women -- in an awkward, confusing and demoralizing situation.
Most women can attest to the fact that many workplaces are plagued with inappropriate behavior by men in power. The latest Letterman controversy sheds new light on the widespread objectification of women in the workplace.
We recently received a call from a man in Rockford, Ill., who wanted to get advice from NOW about what to tell his 16 year-old daughter who was confused by reports on the latest Letterman controversy. The father raised his daughter to be a feminist. He raised her to stand up for herself. He raised her not be objectified as a sexual object. She admits she is confused because the messages she sees on television and news reports appear to make it okay to objectify women as long as the man in power is famous. He can crack a few jokes and publicly apologize for his mistakes. It is this kind of hypocrisy that perpetuates the image of men in power preying on women, while many look the other way.
Every woman -- and every man -- deserves to work in a place where all employees are respected for their talents and skills. The National Organization for Women calls on CBS to recognize that Letterman's behavior creates a toxic environment and to take action immediately to rectify this situation. With just two women on CBS' Board of Directors, we're not holding our breath.

And, just because he was not *married* to Regina Lasko does not make what he did any less despicable. He was screwing every gal at work apparently. He was involved with her (Regina) for over 20 years. He has a child with her. While he had that child with her was when he was f-ing around with the gal that started this blackmailing attempt. So, he screwed around on the woman who was going to be his wife and is the mother of his son.
I guess the question Whopee can ask is "When is cheating, cheating? I mean, they weren't married so it's cool. No biggie." Like rape. It wasn't rape rape.
I hope he has a good explanation for his son someday.
I guess everyone who is dating someone would be cool if their partner/significant other started screwing the boss. Especially if it brought on a promotion.
Nice.

I was just thinking this morning about going to a concert with a bunch of JWs as a teen. They were all elders kids. They brought in something in a plastic jug (you could back then) and everyone was chugging from it. My friend was falling down drunk as was her 14 year-old brother.
Her older brother and sister-in-law were tanked (He was an MS) and another couple were puking all over the place. I was semi-sober. Which is how I remember any of this.
We saw Marshall Tucker band. We were all wearing cowboy hats and, boots, bandanas, etc. Recall this is the suburbs of Chicago.
No one heard a word about it from the Elders. This was the about the fourth time I saw them all falling down drunk, so this was not a one time occurance. Their dad, the Elder, was renowned for his Scotch collection.

AK-Jeff, you did such a noble and kind act by adopting your daughter and trying to give her a better life. You and your wife love her and have done what parents across the world do--the best you can.
I admire all you have done for your daughter and especially for your grand-children. They are so lucky to have you. I am really sorry the JWs treated you so poorly. I live in an area where biracial couples are common, so I haven't seen that type of prejudice. I am sure it goes on. Which is worse coming from them-God's channel.

OTWO, thanks. You are correct on all points. I am emotional on it. I love the city so much and want to see it recognized. At the same time Gregor is correct, as you are, with the patronage and corruption. Taxes are so high already, it is crazy. I go in to visit and see stuff and go back to the 'Burbs to buy it.

I give up. Almost.
What does any city in the US have other than a costal city?
Chicago is on a coast. The lake coast. Lake Michigan is pretty big. You can boat, swim, surf, etc.
As for what is there to do? What is there to do beyond downtown NYC? Beyond Atlanta? Beyond Madrid? Beyond Tokoyo?
That is the point. There are all kinds of things to do. There are all kinds of things to experience that bring the American experience home.
Plus, you can go to a taping of Oprah. They don't have that in Rio!
I'll fill in for Mayor Daley:

Chicago is the third largest city in the US. The metro area has over 10 million people. Chicago is very similar to New York.
We are on the shore of Lake Michigan and the city has the tallest buildings in the US. You may have heard of some of them? The Sears Tower? (Now Willis) John Hancock buildings? We have a public zoo that is on the lake shore--Lincoln Park Zoo. Navy Pier. The Planitarium, Field Museum, Art Institute--I could go on, but, there is so much to see and do just in the downtown area, one week would not be enough.
Chicago has Chinatown, Greektown, Koreatown, Rush Street area for major partying, the Magnificant Mile for shopping, State Street for all kinds of stuff. Water Tower for shopping, eating, and more.
The Olympics were to be held all within 10 minutes of the lake shore. The land was already purchased by the city and was an old hospital site. Which would have been the main site. The other sites would have been park district sites. The city has lots of parks and pools, etc.
As for unions and patronage, that is the Chicago way now. That would not change. But, people who are now unemployed and on welfare would at least be working and earning a living rather than sitting on their butts. The contractors and their politician buddies would still be lining their pockets. Just like now. Snow removal comes to mind.

Many Chicagoans cared because it would have put Chicago on the international map as a destination for more tourism. Right now we get US tourism. International tourism would be fantastic. Similar to LA and New York. We get some because of the airport and the buildings, however, having the Olympics would really give the city visibility.
Other than visibility as being the most corrupt city in the most corrupt state.
And tourism brings in dollars. Dollars mean jobs.
