Maintaining Faith In God As An Ex-JW
by pronomono inas i fade further from the jws, i'm finding it increasingly hard to maintain faith in god.
i've been exploring many alternatives from atheism, agnostic, apathetic, pagan, and satanism (not devil worship, but the promotion of self-indulgence) to name a few.
i'm thoroughly intrigued to learn how those of you who remained christian managed to maintain your faith in god and christ, especially after enduring all the lies that we've been told about them.

I guess whether a person sees atheists as a threat or not depends on the nature of their faith. Atheism is obviously a threat to any belief in god not based on direct objective personal experience (ie most of them) because the objective evidence for god that is available to everyone seems (to me), at best, moot.
I don't see the point of a religious view based solely on a dogged determination to believe it irrespective of proven facts. It sounds more like an emotional attachment.

I don't think knowledge is necessarily seen as arrogant, but the way it's presented certainly can be.

I agree Simon. The question is "why do you believe as you do?". Then there is a basis for discussion. If a person can't explain it then it's more difficult to engage but that's their problem - they can either acknowledge that they can't explain why they believe something or start the journey to understanding their own beliefs and perhaps changing them.
A person may have beliefs based on their own experiences. The difficulty here would be convincing someone else of the validity of those beliefs, who hadn't shared that experience or had a different view of it. That won't be an issue unless they attempt to convince the other person that their beliefs are in some way 'a truth' for everyone.
Perhaps the OP can explain why they hold their beliefs in a way that might lead to discussion. It's less likely to happen if they see the environment as fundamentally antagonistic.

I wonder if part of the problem is that we are all at different stages of thinking about our religious or spiritual beliefs. If I have spent ten or twenty years thinking and studying a particular subject, I would expect to be better informed than someone embarking on the same journey. Things that I now take for granted might be beyond another person's 'boggle threshold' at that point. This puts me in a much stronger position in debate and it may also be more difficult for an opponent to rebut my arguments. This doesn't of course mean my arguments are correct.
I suspect some of the discomfort mentioned on this thread comes from this 'inequality of arms' in discussion. The only counter to this is to invest time and personal study on the subject under discussion. Many of the things we consider true based on our own experiences or feelings turn out not to be true for other people or in their own right. This is an opportunity to learn if we are in the right frame of mind.
On the other hand, mocking a person's beliefs or personal experiences can come across as somewhat high-handed and arrogant, and does look like bullying sometimes to me. If we have run out of patience with a particular poster why not simply ignore them? What is this desire to have the last word all the time for some people? There is after all no dishonour in refusing combat with an unworthy or ill-equipped opponent.
it is possible that some posters continue to press a point beyond that which is kind and maybe the motive is education and the elimination of badly thought -through intellectual positions however it doesn't always look like the motive is so pure.

I'm not sure anyone has 'hijacked' the word 'spirituality'. It has religious as well as non-religious connotations by definition.
