we all probably know already that jws don't celebrate christmas, labeling it a pagan holiday and telling its whole sordid history to anyone who'll listen.
however, i found out that wedding rings are pagan in origin.
the jws know it but they include the exchange of rings during the wedding ceremony, explaining that rings are exchanged as an outward symbol to everyone that this couple is married, thus justifying the pagan origin of the whole thing.
Zenpunk, there is a difference between wedding rings and Christmas. Almost everything about Christmas is a lie. If one celebrates a lie is it Christian? If you wear a wedding ring are there any lies invoved.
This is a topic I've been discussing privately since I think it is hypocritical for atheists to celebrate religious holidays.

i know for englishmans missus, her ladyship, her bunch of flowers would include freshias.
please give me some advice on the appropriate action i should take if i met you for the first time.
I love wild flowers and spring flowers (irises, tulips, daisies). As for roses, I love pink tea roses.

it seems that the society has always been concerned with materialism.
at meetings and assemblies, the faithful have been admonished to watch out for the sin of materialism.
if you missed a meeting, could it be because you were being materialistic?
JWs always view others as materialistic but never themselves. It's always someone else's family that's materialistic and not their own family. They are good at pointing the finger at everyone else but themselves.

the elders wife that really pisses me off, is the one that would boastfully announce that jehovah had provided her husband with a part-time teaching job, emphasising that his employment was "on the line" each year....but thanks to jehovah,(in other words) we are so fucking loyal and do many hours in field service and things that nobody could possibly know about ( but i'm letting you know indirectly) so my husband has an income to assist us in our pioneer service!

personally, i do not believe god ever has or ever will exist.
i have my reasons -- i guess i could be considered an agnostic, rather than an athiest.
i was curious to see what the larger part of the former borg community believed, now looking from the outside in, rather than the opposite.
It's interesting how mostly females still have some belief in a spiritual person of some kind. Perhaps it is emotional rather than intellectual to believe in something greater than ourselves but it makes sense to me right now.

i wonder how much of an impact this will have on the blood policy in ireland, if any at all?
the article does not say the woman was a jw or what faith she practiced.. any medical professional's see any reason for a jw to deny the use of retroviral drugs?
I'm not disputing whether this article and the woman's issue is her religiosity. I was recalling my own experiences with HIV/AIDS clients. I've seen levels of denial that are astounding. One client, I worked with, refused to believe that he was infected. He often stated "it must be the vitamin I've been taking lately." Ignorance and denial combined can be dangerous as you can see from this article. I don't believe it is exclusively a dub problem but is common in among those with a limited education. There are many communities that are ignorant of medical options.

the watchtower society has not been content with giving "biblical" reasons for prohibiting blood transfusions.
articles and publications dealing with this question are just as concerned with emphasizing the dangers of blood transfusions and the advantages of some alternatives to blood transfusions.
