Watchtower Hate Speech and Intimidation Might be a Violation of US Federal Law

the united states is more lenient than most countries when it comes to hate speech and allowing organised religions to have their way, even when they hurt others.

however, there are limits.

i found a federal law that seems strangely relevant to recent watchtower articles that labels former members as "mentally diseased" and discuss the "slaughter of apostates".

Personally... I think there is a line somewhere between 'speaking out against those that are offensive' and 'having a vendetta'.

The WT said something offensive... Those who were offended spoke up, and were clearly heard. It is good that some folks brought this to the attention of national news orgs., and that they picked up the story and brought it to public light. No-doubt there were curious people out there who found the hurtful teachings of the WT shocking, and perhaps some isolated exJW's could feel a little less alone in a post-JW life.

I'm content to leave it at that. The world has bigger problems. Knowledge is the first defense, and I'd rather serve it one sip at a time and be heard, than shout so loudly and frequently that people tune us out. Let this settle into people's minds, and lurk in Internet search results. I think trying to escalate this further and further - in some vain hope to 'punish' the WT or GB... just makes ex-JW's look petty and vindictive. It isn't realistic, and it won't be productive. Like others have pointed out - there are free-speech laws, and realistically little more can come from this.

I don't think we don't need to destroy the organization. We can leave that to the GB. They are the ones that have to answer to their gradual accumulation of lies, errors, and cover-ups. A little patience goes a long way, and as others have said - a sucker is born every minute. We can't help the sucker - but we can help the wiser.

I think, for the sake of people, we should focus on keeping our own house clean: Maintaining a welcoming, honest community for those who want to break free... Providing a truthful, accurate, non-hateful accounting of the real-world JW mentality and lifestyle... etc.

Personally, I think we could clean our own house a little better before getting too ambitious.

New To Wine - Looking for Suggestions

usually, in the evenings i like to relax, watch a movie or a comple tv shows, and sip on some vodka.. lately, however, i've gotten into reading again - and vodka just isn't the right drink.

the characters in the books are often read of drinking this wine or that - which has given me a bit of a craving for a good red wine.

something relaxing, and easy enough that it doesn't get you buzzed after a few sips (inhibiting my ability to read, etc.).

I'm not in California, actually.. I'm in Colorado. I have grown grapes here, and they do grow wonderfully. I'll try a few local wines - and if they don't hit it, I'll expand from there.

Now the really hard question: Which cheese will go best with that wine...

Go on some vineyard/winery tours if you have them in your area.

Hmm. I've toured some vineyards in northern CA.. but now that I think about it - I do know of a place a few miles west of hear that specializes only in local wines.

I should take a trip over there - I think they might even ofter free tasting for some of it.

Hi everyone,

Usually, in the evenings I like to relax, watch a movie or a comple TV shows, and sip on some vodka.

Lately, however, I've gotten into reading again - and vodka just isn't the right drink. The characters in the books are often read of drinking this wine or that - which has given me a bit of a craving for a good red wine. Something relaxing, and easy enough that it doesn't get you buzzed after a few sips (inhibiting my ability to read, etc.)

I've read a few sites with suggestions - but frankly itis a bit overwhelming, and just not specific enough to really guide me as to where to begin. I went to the liquor store - there are so many bottles to choose from, who knows what you are getting?

Any suggestions for someone new to wine? (I'm looking for something light, preferably red, and I have a bit of sweet tooth.)

in orange county, california, it is illegal to hold a religious meeting in your home.. this is what chuck and stephanie fromm, of san juan capistrano, discovered when they were fined $300 earlier this month for holding a bible study class on their property.. officialdom in the county said the couple were singled out because it is considered illegal to hold a regular gathering of more than three people on private property.

officials stated that the fromms require a license to hold meetings in their home.. san juan capistrano authorities claim home bible study is not allowed because it is a church, and churches require a conditional use permit (cup) in residential areas.. the fromms face additional fines of $500 per meeting for any further religious gatherings in their home, according to the pacific justice institute.. the citys action is a brazen violation of the first amendment, which guarantees free worship without government intervention.. pji and the fromms plan to appeal a decision made by the city to uphold the fine and restriction to the california superior court in orange county, according to kcoy 12 news, a fox affiliate.. ironically, the city of san juan capistrano was founded as a mission in the late 1700s by catholic priest junipero serra.

i've studied with like 30 diff denominations.

i really feel jw is best for me.

i think it's the 144,000 part & the once a year get together when they pass around the sacrament that bothers me most.

My JW wife left me. She comitted adultry - but in the Watchtower religion - I was the evil person.

Do you know why?

Because:

I do not believe that a an once lived that had long hair that magically made him strong.

I do not believe that a man was swallowed by a fish, and lived for days in the oxygen-devoid stomach of a fish. For 3 days.

I do not believe that a man once built a wooden boat twice the size of the titanic... and that all life on earth was kept alive in that boat for 1 year and 11 days by 8 people.

I do not believe a few old self-elected guys in New York City speak the indisputable will of god.

Good luck with the watchtower. You'll either figure it out, or you won't. God, prayer - they can not do anything. They never do. Faith can not move mountains. Never could, never will.

Man, can and has moved mountains, via science and technology. It's not perfect - but it is real.

Today ALL of the kids have access to computers and internet and it is impossible to for any parent to completely supervise the use. School, library, bedrooms---and if not there, on a tiny handheld computer on the school bus.

They can only hope to intill a phobia.

That is the unfortunately reality. When backed into a corner, leaders always behave the same - rather than appologizing for their wrong actions - they lash out against those who call them out in their failures and mis-deeds.

They can't counter or deny the accusations. They said the generation of 1914 would by 'no means pass away'. Plain and simple - they were wrong, they were not 'led by holy spirit', 'inspired', or 'god's channel of communication' - they were just speaking the opinions of men. They refuse to humbly admit their mistake - and they lash out against those who notice their hypocracy.
