I can't answer for all "Christians" but the JW version kind of creates an impotent version of Almighty God who is thwarted by the Devil (at least temporarily) and has his tied throughout the millennia. (I'd like to end wickedness but I can't because the Devil pulled a fast one on me.) I agree that the WT seems logical, but it is difficult to square with the Bible. It elevates the character of Satan and dilutes the sovereignty of God. In Scripture, God's sovereignty is beyond question and his Name does not to be sanctified or vindicated. The so-called "Universal Court Case" is something Rutherford, himself a lawyer dreamed up.

Why dont more Christians invoke a JW-style Satan argument when debating why God allows suffering?
by Half a Person ini have just been watched the first part of a sort-of theist vs atheist debate on youtube featuring christopher hitchens.. what struck me is that in all of these types of debates that ive seen, the christians, when faced with the question why does god allow suffering, never really provide any sort of satisfying answer.
its usually something along the lines of:.
our question shouldnt be what is *god* doing, but, rather, we should ask ourselves: what am *i* doing?

That sounds like the Bailey's all right. We had a sister here who took "sister" Bailey shopping on each visit. Wonder what her credit card bills looked like.

If you pray, do you say 'Jehovah'...?
by wantstoleave injust wondering of those that pray and who have left the organisation, do you still address god as jehovah?.
i think i'm currently in that awkward stage where i'm neither in or out, yet don't feel i should even address, or have the right, to talk to god (jehovah) until i decide where i sit.
so i'm wondering if it's hypocritical to pray and use his name.

I address Almighty God as Father instead of by any personal name.
(This actually got me in trouble at the Kingdom Hall since certain ones considered it "apostate" not to say "Jehovah" in prayer -- go figure.)

November 15 2009 Watchtower (Study Edition) - Treasure Your Place in the Congregation...
by CrazyBlonde inthought this one was quite creepy - the article to be studied january 11-17 "treasure your place in the congregation", page 13 para 5 reads (italics mine):.
"the spirit that now operates in the sons of disobedience" is so widespread that it is like the air we breathe.

As a reminder "channel" is not a Biblical term and is more commonly found in connection with occult and spiritualistic mediums.

I bet this opens up for more talmudic clarifications and regulations like their other rules ...
What constitutes an "embrace"? (Did the hand linger on the wife's back?) If I can discreetly hold hands with my wife, can our entire family hold hands during a prayer? What about those who are engaged?
... but more to the point -- where is ANY of this of this in SCRIPTURE?!

What do you think about this quote from the 2003 District Convention talk "Beware of the Voice of Strangers"?
by LUKEWARM in[23:23] so friends, hypothetically, and i repeat, hypothetically, even if an angel were to come down here and land on this platform, today, at this moment, and to present something to us that didn't fit into the pattern of truth, what should we be ready to do?
we should be ready to say, " hold on there, that doesn't fit into the pattern, and i am not going to listen to it!
" yes, even if it were one of jehovah's angels.. .

As a sidepoint - I'm quite familiar with the talk. The watchtower article of the same name was used as the basis for the Presiding Overseer's extended, special "local needs" talk on the night I was DF'd on apostasy charges.

It seems like they are building on what Paul writes at Gal 1:8
"But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed."
The problem with the Watchtower interpretation is that over the course of their history they themselves have regulary changed their own pattern of Good News. By this token any time there is a new light, the JW should reject the WT as a the "voice of a stranger", since it changes the pattern of Good News that they have been preaching.

Here is one time I wasn't a squealer ...
We out in service with an elderly sister. Me and my buddy were sitting the backseat of her car when we noticed something of interest poking out from under her seat. When she went to the door with the other sister in the group we took a look and discovered some books on growing marijauna as well as a bag of pot. Needless to say we were shocked but we thought it was more funny than anything else and didn't rat her out.
