BTS I don't believe that will be done, I was just making a generous assumption to see what we could ideally do.

+$4.00 Gasoline. How does it change the Energy game
by designs inwill it put pressure on politicians to approve the keystone pipeline.. should the nation's refineries stop selling as much gasoline as exports.. how does +$4.00 gasoline affect your monthly budget, how do you adjust..

From my post above, 22.3*.25 = 5.575 watts per square foot
1,000,000/5.575 = 179,372 square feet to produce 1,000,000 watts
43,560 square feet in 1 acre
179.372/43,560 = 4 acres
My math with several assumptions roughly matches design’s 3 to 5 acres for a 1MW solar plant. -

Edit: I fixed a screwup.
Oh, so let's say you do that every day. How long is the payoff.
Year 1 $5,000/365 = $13.7/gallon
Year 2 $5,000/730 = $6.8/gallon
Year 3 $5,000/1095 = $4.5/gallon
Year 4 $5,000/1460 = $3.4/gallon
Year 5 $5,000/1825 = $2.7/gallon
Year 6 $5,000/2190 = $2.2/gallon
Year 7 $5,000/2555 = $1.9/gallon
Year 8 $5,000/2920 = $1.7/gallon
Year 9 $5,000/3285 = $1.5/gallon
Year 10 $5,000/3650 = $1.36/gallon
Got to today's gas prices in my area by year 4. That's actually not that bad of a break-even time.

1400 watts per square meter with no atmosphere
1000 watts per square meter with atmosphere and no clouds
1 square meter = 10.76 square feet
1000/10.76 = 93 watts per square foot maximum
According to the article BTS posted, in Arizona, in July, it’s about 240 watts per square meter per 24 hrs.
240/10.76 = 22.3 watts per square foot
Let’s be optimistic and say in a few years our solar panels will hit around the maximum theoretical conversion rate at 85%
22.3*.85 = 18.95 watts per foot per day
Multiply by 24 since the article said it was averaged over the entire 24 hr period
18.95*24 = 455 watt-hrs per day
33,700 watt hours in a gallon of gasoline is the rating the EPA uses.
33,700/455 = 74 square feet.
Right now, I think most panels are more towards 25% conversion rate.
33,700/(22.3*.25*24) = 251 square feet. That seems about right.
14 or 15 of the 3 X 6 panels should do it. And the panels would probably cost in the neighborhood of $5,000. And of course, that’s Arizona, in July. Might take a few more panels for the rest of us. And that’s only 1 gallon equivalent, so your commute would need to be very short each day. -

Higher energy prices suck for the consumer in the short term. But they are actually GOOD for the US in the mid-long term. Entering the oil/gas industry last year, one thing I've discovered is the whole peak oil thing is misleading. "Recoverable" oil reserves typically mean what is economically recoverable. There is a tremendous amound of liquid petroleum that wasn't economically recoverable at $2.00/gallon, but is at $4.00/gallon. I read an article the last couple of days (think it was on Yahoo) that mentioned that US oil production was to peak in the early 2020's, but we surpassed that peak this year. Now it's expected our peak will be much higher, and we may be oil independent in the next 15-20 years based on increased oil production.
There is no lack of oil, or other fossil fuels. There is enough to sustain our projected energy needs for hundreds and even thousands of years. But drilling wells can cost 15-20 million dollars and then hundreds of thousands of dollars in remedial work per year. So whether it is economically viable depends on the price of oil.
We will never run out of oil, coal, or natural gas in the forseeable future. Just as the predictions in the 1950's that we would run out shortly were wrong, so are any predictions now. At some point, green energy will be cheaper to produce, and companies will pursue that instead. The higher the prices go, the greener our energy will get, as that technology becomes economically profitable.
So if you're an environmentalist, be thankful for higher oil prices!

Anyone else suffer from sleep paralysis?
by Razziel inoldflame's post got me thinking about it.
i've never asked other people about how common it is, but it's pretty scary.. basically your body is asleep and paralyzed, but your mind is awake.
sometimes you get a feeling of dread, othertimes of euphoria.

And yeah, as I said in Oldflame's post, I originally thought it was demons too.

I did notice this virtually always happens when I sleep on my back. I've started going to sleep on my side or stomach and don't experience this as much. When I do have it, it's when I've rolled back onto my back during the night. I've wondered if it's an issue with bloodflow to the brain, but I don't know. All I know is it is terrifying when it happens.

What really makes it scary is that even if you can't control your eyes, if your eyelids are slightly open you can see the room, and see the hallucinations. Makes it seem so real.

Oldflame's post got me thinking about it. I've never asked other people about how common it is, but it's pretty scary.
Basically your body is asleep and paralyzed, but your mind is awake. Sometimes you get a feeling of dread, othertimes of euphoria. Sometimes you hallucinate, and there are people or horrible creatures in the bedroom with you, and you can have conversations with them. I almost always get a loud buzzing sensation in my ears/neck that occurs right before my mind "wakes" up with me paralyzed.
From Wikipedia: Many perceptions associated with sleep paralysis (visceral buzzing, loud sounds, excited mental state, [ 22 ] presences, and the paralysis itself) also constitute a common phase in the early progression of episodes referred to as out of body experiences. [ 23 ] Mental focus varies between the two conditions; paralysis sufferers tend to fixate on reestablishing operation of the body, whereas subjects of out-of-body episodes are more occupied by perceived non-equivalence with the body.
I am one of the ones that fixated on reestablishing control of my body, even when I had terrible visions of supernatural creatures, and early on I found out even though I couldn't move myself, I could control my breathing. So I started breathing as fast I could, and within a couple of minutes, my body woke up from the increased oxygen.
Anybody else ever suffer from this?

This is actually a fear I have, and reminds me of an episode of Tales From the Crypt. Not all people lose consciousness immediately after they are "dead". I believe there are some examples such as the French Revolution, of people getting their head chopped off and still responding to people calling their name for a couple of minutes. Physiology is different in everyone, and I fear many people may go on to experience some form of consciousness and physical pain many hours after they have "died", even if in some hallucigenic state.
Personally, I occasionally have problems with sleep paralysis. My mind is aware, but my body is paralyzed in the normal sleep cycle. This is a scary phenomenon. Hallucinations happen frequently. People are in my bedroom who aren't really there. Sometimes they talk to me. I almost always get a feeling of either dread or euphoria. But it's not real. When I was a JW I thought it was demons attacking me. Now I know better. Thankfully I discovered a trick to get myself out of that state very quickly and cause my body to wake up.
