  Evolution of a congregation 1978- 2018

  our whole congregation was excited as we stood in front of our brand new kh and smiled for the photographer from the local newspaper.. for years we had been travelling 30 mins each way to attend the meetings and now, after a big effort of donations and hard work we finally had our own kh in our own town.

  in the picture, there were 45 smiling faces of all ages, from the newborn to the old brother that had turned 100 and everyone in between.

  the year was 1978.. the congregation grew and shrank over the years, probably hitting its peak during the 80's and 90's, there was even a renovation in the early 90's that the local brothers donated towards, for the benefit of the local town to hear the good news about the imminent arrival of the end.

  The congregation in which I have plenty of stats for goes like this ...

  Started with 75 publishers in 1989.
  

  By 1995 peaked at 89 and then it's been a slow steady decline. By 2003 it was 82

  By 2014 it was 76.

  By 2018 it is now 69.

  22 of these are aged 60 or older ... and 16 of those are over 70.

  were are they now and what position are they in.. lets do a running count.. c.o.b.e was interfering with his daughter,d.f,reinstated died in good standing.. branch oveersear multiple young children d.f,reinstated in good standing.. publisher interfeared with small child in the k.h d.f not sure were he is.. publisher sexually abused 3 relatives no action taken in good standing.. current elder raped his sister years ago little action taken was not an elder at the time.. publisher sexualy abused young girl d.f,reinstater now in good standing.. m.s multiple young girls d.f,died trying to get reinstated.. so thats 7.. karter..

  These perpetrators I knew from my old circuit and knew them to speak to (before I knew about them or afterwards when I felt obligated to) before they moved away or got DF'd.

  1. I became aware of this one when was a teenager aged 16 through 19 who during that time abused younger boys sexually. This was 1980's. He was a pioneer and was DF'd when it came to light but no report was made to the police at the time. It was about 20 years later by one of the (now adult) victims and the police investigated it.

  2. The next one was the high profile (in England) Michael Porter (from Somerset) case in 2007 - he was a late teen through mid twenties pioneer and MS when he perpetrated his acts of child abuse much earlier. Several of his victims were either too young to know what he did to them or too fearful to tell anyone. Eventually a victim, now an adult told him that if he didn't self report to the Police then he (the victim) would. Porter coughed to even the cases where the kids were too young to have remembered and he pleaded guilty. He got a suspended sentence but this was appealed and eventually he got sentenced to 18 months real jail time.

  Porter had already left the area, married, become an elder and a bethelite before being exposed. He was in an English London flagship congregation and was service overseer on a body of elders which included some of the London Branch Committee. He got a public reproof and a District Overseer was sent to placate his home congregation when they wanted to know why he wasn't disfellowshipped.

  I believe he has a child of his own who he is not permitted to have contact with unless supervised by social services! What a mess.

  3. Another one was when I was an elder and we "inherited" a now dead paedo (twisted, self entitled bastard - hooray!) who had done jailtime and been sent to our town by the authorities. They told us that he was a paedo and needed watching. We informed "family heads" of his background; but several older sisters found out through the grapevine and "were incensed" at not being told. One who had been abused as a child DA'd over it.

  So 3 plus others that I knew about in less detail from other JW's.

  set in a jehovah's witness community in england, the film's strength and power lies in its directness.. apostasy depicts the growing rift in a family — a mother and two daughters — who are rigorously devoted to their religion.

  It is a superb, accurate (in portraying north west England and its JW's), moving and even an understanding and empathetic film. Well deserving its 4 and 5 star review ratings by the British mainstream press.

  But along with its empathy it holds back no punches in revealing the understated drudgery-in-service and consequential horror of putting the views of 8 men in New York ahead of what is truly best for yourself and your family.

  I cannot think of a better actress to play the resolute and distressed mother than Siobhan Finneran.

  If the moneychangers in the temple are squabbling over a carbuncle on a backside then it shows what hypocritical bunch of money-grubbers they are.

  Women and Children First Still!

  at a time when women fly combat aircraft, when they are grant equality in education,in employment,in government,in athletics,etc.

  what entitles women to the status of children still?.

  women and children first when it comes to emergency situations.

  Practically speaking - children especially gravitate to their mothers in times of peril. So the women are better at looking after their children and keeping them feeling safe.

  Growing Up Strange (even for a JW)

  i've been meaning to join an online ex-jw community for quite some time, and finally have made the effort to do so.

  i was raised in a small/mid size city in the northeast united states.

  i am currently 27 years old, just about five years fully out of the organization (after about two years of "fading" away).

  Excellent read and high quality writing. Some of what you say chimes with my experience - (one parent - the non jw one of course - sometimes doing the others bidding to gain a peaceful life and my feeling unsupported) yet I am 30 years older than you.

  Banners for London Protest

  hi folks, i’m attending the london protest at the excel convention in august and am making some banners.

  i’m aiming for short but memorable sentences that will stick in jws minds and also make them laugh a little at their own organisation.. my best so far is ‘this is not a protest, it’s an overlapping protest’.

  has anyone got any ideas for more?.
