i frequently read on this board that somebody has 'been a jw for over 25 years' and then learn that they are in fact 25 years and three days old.. i am very easily confused, in fact i actually got inside a car of similar color to my own recently and spent at least five minutes with a furrowed brow trying to force my car key into its ignition, fortunately, i realised my error before i was arrested.

so, just to humor me, can you all post how long you were/are baptised jw's?.

i don't know that answer entirely so i'll wait and see what happens.

YOYO and Fred are getting such valuable service time here. Its a good thing that Jehovah provided this wonderful forum for peolple like these to enlighten us and show us our errant ways. With the added bonus of padding their service hours for the month, because they are to lazy to go door to door. Dont you have a meeting to study for.

since we have so many right-leaning politically speaking posters, i was wondering what comments they might be willing to offer up on this column i caught this morning.. http://www.observer.com/pages/conason.asp.

i am sure most of those who are quick to criticize anything that even remotely relates to clinton are all whitewater experts by now.

i would enjoy reading what thoughts you may have on the parallels and even how enron makes whitewater look like a trip to the penny candy store.. hoping some conservative can help me feel less screwed by my republican administration,.

Hey Julie,
Republican, Democrat is all the same. Clinton got major contributions from Enron, and was very involved in there overseas projects during his administration. They are all whores of lobbyist and big money. I dont necessarily lean either way, but I am glad Bush is handling this war and not Gore.

Maturity, Cults, and JWs

how cults trap us: the criteria to define cults is fairly well established.

i think "lifton" did the best job.

however, there is one feature that none of the cult expose' literature seems to deal with - maturity.

Interesting post, I never really thought about it in terms of maturity. I personnaly was raised a witness, and cannot speak of it in terms of converting as an adult. I am young man now, and when I decided to leave the organization, I felt like I had a lot of growing up to do. Material goals and education where never big priorities growing up, and it was culture shock realizing what it takes to make it in the real world. It is such a different mind set. That simple realization to me makes it so evident what a cult can do to your outlook on life. Thats why so many people stick with it, they are so emotionally detached from reality, that it seems to hard to let go. I also remember being in awe of elders, COs and DOs, taking there word as Gospel on the most minute details of my life. My father was unbelieving, so I looked to these people as father fiqures. I look back now and realize that these elders were uneducated men for the most part, working menial labor jobs, and yet I looked to there "insight" to lead my life in the right direction.

i just returned home from the hospital.

my sister in law had a mis- carriage today.

it was a very sad day for her and my wifes family.

I just returned home from the hospital. My sister in law had a mis- carriage today. It was a very sad day for her and my wifes family. She was two weeks away from her due date, and two years seperated from a previous mis-carriage. This was, to say the least, an upsetting day. But as if it was not bad enough, the elders showed up. My sister in law is unfortunately a witness, but in her day of need, it did not matter to us. Regardless of our differences, we came to comfort her. And of course the "loving elders" came to comfort her with these loving words. "We certainly will see this baby in paradise." OK harmless enough so far.Then he proceded to say, "With children like they are these days, you never know if they would make it through armageddon." So in essence saying, its a good thing this happened because we know for sure the baby will be in paradise. I wanted to shoot him, right then and there!

Good advice. What annoys me the most, is that "God will provide the answers in his own time" BS. Which to me basically means I have no answers for your qustions, but I am too brainwashed to care what I think. I have certainly tried not to be over zealous, like a new witness is, and I have been slowly plugging away for two years now to no avail. Also everytime something happens in the news, like the terrorist attacks, I get that "end is so close rap that drives me nuts" to the contrary it pushes me in the other direction. It is unreal how the society plays on peoples emotions to raise a scare, to try to boost there numbers.

Quick question. The hardest thing for me is dealing with family that are still witnesses. My family dosent necessarily shun me, but are unwilling to discuss doctrine, or doubts, even though I know they have all had them. I have been very subtle about my approach, but There is no room for discussion with them. I know all of you face this to. What do you do?

Hello all, first time post, long time observer. I have been free from the WTBTS for a couple of years now, and am excited to meet some new people who have been there and done that like I have. The big bad "world" dosent seem so bad anymore. It was hard at first being completely cutt-off from the only people I associated with growing up, but it gets easier everyday. I feel free to do whatever my heart desires, (ie personal goals, career aspirations) without being dictated by a handful of old men in Brooklyn. I was never Disfellowshipped or DA myself, I just slipped through the cracks. But it makes no difference, I am still equally shunned as if I am swine. I have learned so much on the internet, and I am greatful to the people resposible for the abundance of info on forums such as these. Anyway, I look forward to meeting many of you in the future, and making new friends.
