Ok.. At some point you might just ask yourself whether you believe sincerity means anything, or if it's better to live a lie on the off chance that the society is right. If you believe God reads hearts and judges accordingly, is it better to be a good witness and do all the things based on self doubt on the off chance it will save you, or is it better to be honest even if that means you don't know? See even with this belief, God wouldn't go for the person putting on an act right? But if you're honest and sincere that will inevitably lead to the truth - you may not know a lot of things, but atleast you're truthful about that.

Hey Ugg, that wasn't a novel at all. I did find this one paragraph interesting:
each step may sound so small,,,but none the less,,,it IS a step forward....i hope to be a normal whole person some day......i will try my best weather it takes 2 years or 20! i know it is not all the societies fault,,,,,but....the DEEPEST scars are from them...
Who says you're not a whole person now? Sure by some standards (the "normal" one) maybe you're not, but I don't see any reason why someone who might have a nicer life without any of the crap you had to endure is any BETTER than you. Mind you, I've looked into psychology, the wholistic stuff, mind/body approaches and so on, and while appreciating what all of that has to say I say what is whole is simply different for everybody. In fact, those scars just mean you're a deeper individual for it, and some might say that's better than a person who has led a sheltered life. Isn't it true that when you are true to yourself, you can't help but be whole? -

Are you looking for beliefs or truth?
by Pleasuredome inhere's an interesting quote i found on the net about why we need truth rather than beliefs.
belief has nothing to do with truth.
there is danger in belief: it makes you feel that you know the truth.

some months ago, talking with one old friend about the UN affairs, the one who gave me Bible study, said as one of his last arguments: But you talk a lot about seeking the truth, is it so important the truth ? ... my reply, but this isn't the point of being a JW ? ... he didn't reply anything.
Ahhh, but the truth came out didn't it? -

How will you find happiness?
by eyeslice inin the truth, happiness is equated with a stable family life, a hope for the future and working for the cause.. i still believe the same, just may be the cause isnt the same any more.
-
Introspection
Instead of hoping for a projected future which may or may not happen, why don't we just enjoy what we have now? The observation about the cause is a good one, because we do tend to try and figure out what will bring us joy and then try to get that in an effort to secure happiness. But this is the same mind set as hoping for paradise in that you are waiting for a future point in time to be happy, and there is a tendancy to put life on hold and start living only when you've got what you think makes you happy. Instead of clinging to some ideas about what makes us happy, what about simply being open to what life has to offer now? We can become so selective that we never actually live.

So what is it that the believer is trying to secure? Isn't it the sense of self based on belief itself? Of course, the reality is that everything changes, including our minds - so to deny that by changing the content (what you believe in rather than relying on beliefs) really isn't changing a whole lot - that is to say the mindset behind it is still one of sticking to something in a world that constantly changes.
Obviously you will want to go by your best judgement in many situations, but both the belief that you are safe and unsafe are only that, beliefs. If you want the truth it's simply a matter of seeing them as beliefs and nothing more. 'He that seeks to save his soul will lose it' - the continuous cycle of adaptation is ultimately futile, because ultimately, in the bigger picture change is a matter of transformation. You will find no security in that which is only conditional, that of course has to be found in a belief - which is itself dependent on some conditional factor.

Hey Utopian, that's great to hear about your son. Carnosine is expensive, but I've found one place that has it at a pretty cheap price - www.swansonvitamins.com. (notice these are 500mg caps) I'm not that old yet so I figure I have time, but it's something good to know about so I will definitely keep it in mind.

If you don't already, I would suggest start taking a multi vitamin formula. Here is a link to an article on smoking cessation along with nutritional guidelines. It doesn't cost very much, and it's stuff you need for your health anyways. Some extra vitamin C is a good idea, I would recommend having a bottle with the water you'll want to drink in a day and getting some fine buffered vitamin C powder (calcium ascorbate) that dissolves readily in water. This way you can get it little by little throughout the day. This way you're supporting your body as well as working on the psychological aspects.
