SHOULD THE HAITIANS BE ALLOWED TO STAY?
by Mary inas most of you probably know, there were 200 refugees from haiti that made it to us soil earlier today.
however, it seems that these people will most likely be forced to go back to haiti.
i was stunned.

I don't often get in on these discussions..maybe if I ever actually introduce myself, you'll understand better why....
But I have to comment on the general ignorance displayed in this thread.
Firstly, though, my answer to the question: NO, send them back. Yes, there are legal ways to seek your fortune in the US.
Next, the shallow understanding of history and world events displayed on this board is (pathetic) just like that displayed by the average person on the street or my place of business. Welcome to America. US/British/French meddling in everyone else's business is a major factor in the pitiful state of affairs found in most Third World nations. To fully understand how our nearest international neighbors: Haiti and Cuba, Guatemala, Nicaragua, etc, could continue to be Third World countries as we continue to enjoy relative luxury, you would have to understand (deeply, thoroughly) why areas like Trenton, Cincinnati, Detroit, DC, Compton, etc (ad nauseum) continue to muck their way through all the problems caused by the economics of greed.
Back to the question of legal immigration, the US government holds a lottery every year for 50,000 immigrant visas. Compared to the millions who apply for entry every year, this is a small number. What is interesting, though, is that we do this to deliberately attract skilled labor from all regions of the earth. Yep, the US still needs people who will work. Check it out: http://travel.state.gov/DV2004.html
To anyone ignorant enough to believe that immigrants take anybody else's job or sit around on welfare, ok well I don't have much to say to you...
Later.

Well, sorry to be so vague. I was trying to protect the 'innocents' by not mentioning exactly where in the NE...nowhere near the sniper's range.
This is a congregation that was split in two in approx 1972 due to the growth pre-1975. All of us kids at the time would sit or stand in the back.
Then in the mid-80's a smaller congo nearby was disbanded and the servants and publishers redistributed to three or four surrounding congos; this was due to the seasonal nature of the local population and by extension attendance at the hall (ok...beach community). In 1987, the new (rather wasteful, gaudy) hall was built to accommodate the two 'sister' congos.
The congregation in question has very few left. When I last visited, there might have been 15-18 people in attendance out of a peak of about 120 pub's and lots of kids. I know that many moved away (some faded away?) due to the fierce browbeating of a couple of the elders.
Now, they can't get any one in service, and they tend to blame it all on 'materialism'... So they have all the book studies meet at the hall. The only other suggestion that came up so far on the thread that may have a real bearing on this situation, is that they really want to keep an eye on the 'waverers' --bc along with good jobs and 'materialism' usually comes a good home pc and the internet!

Has anyone else heard of this? And what could be the reason? I'm assuming they are trying to reinforce the arrangements for Field Service.

Have there been any posts about the annual meeting yet? Or is it this weekend? I thought they always have it on 10/7 for some (mystical? traditional?) reason.
My sister usually forwards the notes, but not to me directly anymore....

Translation: of course!

Yup...4 years of biting my tongue as incompetent janitors and pin-stripers made foolish mistakes and f**ked up other people's lives.
I never did develop the taste for butt-kissing!
In one small Kentucky congregation, there was a bumbling dolt, a confessed masturbator that loved to shake hands (yecch!), a child molestor, a drunken misogynist, and an adulterer all on the same elder body...nobody respected any one else!
In a larger city congregation, there were lying slumlords and all kind of sleazy businessmen, but, Hey, they were all loyal 'theocrats' so whatever....
If the average Witness got a good look at the ridiculous politics that goes on behind the scenes, they would have to question their allegiance to the Watchtower idol.
