New World Translation, is it the best bible translation?
by littlebuddy inmy jw elder friend said to me that the nwt is the best translation of the bible and that scholars have said as much.
is this true and is it the best?
are there scholars who disagree?.

I don't think it is a red herring to go to the translators, because I think they are important to scriptures and words in the Bible. They are pertinent to the scriptures, to the wording of them. To get a complete understanding of the Bible, I think it is essential to know who the translators were and just how well they understood Hebrew and Greek. I think it is something we can't get away from - - just who were the translators. Just my two cents again. :-) It's not avoidance or evasiveness, it's "wanting to make sure of all things". For the sake of complete accuracy.

Folks, can people agree to disagree without name calling, rudeness, and unkindness. These things are not productive, and they are hurtful, besides. I feel frustrated trying to make sense to Reniaa, but I am sure she is a fine person! Personally, I think you're all fine people. Name calling - - whew - - that accomplishes nothing, except bad feelings. To me, being diplomatic is essential in communicating here, or anywhere. Just a few thoughts.

I just can't help getting the feeling that the WTBTS is backing itself into a corner, and it disturbs me that I still have family who are Jehovah's Witnesses, that there are any JWs at all. These people are all being misled, and that's terrible! Fred Franz was asked in a Scottish courtroom if he could translate a scripture in Genesis into Hebrew, which he wasn't able to do. I think the early translators knew Hebrew and Greek, so they knew what they were doing when they translated the Bible. Fred Franz and the other four men who interpreted the Bible with him just didn't have the language skills the earliest translators had. Renaia, I know I can't change the way you think or how you feel. But, the others of us here, as well as myself, at least most of us, just don't think the NWT is a truly accurate translation of the Bible. I'm sorry if I press your funny button with my replies, because it surely isn't a funny issue. Five men who didn't have Greek (except for Fred Franz, and he was limited) or Hebrew language skills gave you your Bible, and the more I learn about it the more twisted, inaccurate, and inconsistent it seems. Maybe it's futile trying to help you understand where others and I are coming from, but I just have to get my 'two cents' in. Oh, well.

My life ... and how JWD came to be - Part 5
by Simon inmy life ... and how jwd came to be - part 1. my life ... and how jwd came to be - part 2. my life ... and how jwd came to be - part 3. my life ... and how jwd came to be - part 4. i swear, i thought it was only a couple of years at most since i wrote part 4 of "my life and how jwd came to be".
i re-read it after someone posted to it and brought it back on active topics and it was kind of prophetic in a way ... well, i had the 5 years part right if nothing else:.
it would be nice to visit the site (or whatever one is around then) in 5 years time to let people know how we're doing and find only a few of the same people still around.

After more than 20 years of being out of the JWs, it is still hard sometimes, because I have family members in the cult. I disassociated myself all those years ago, and my sister still holds it against me, saying that I turned my back on God and on her, etc. etc. etc. I hate it when she gets started on me, because it is so hard to argue with Jehovah's Witnesses. I am so glad for this site and for others like Silentlambs. I didn't have a clue about the pedophilia issue until years after I left the religion. Also, I have no problem with blood transfusions. I like to give blood. Every person's blood is checked out carefully when it is given. I am sorry if I am going off on tangents here. It is just that I am so glad to be out of the cult! Occasionally I can still feel the debris from the WTBTS in my system. It's kind of a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. So glad, so glad to be out. Thanks for your site, Simon! Please keep up the good, excellent work!

No, no, and then again, no! The New World Translation isn't even actually a 'translation' it's a sectarian paraphrase. How could it be an actual translation when none of the five men who did the translating are Bible scholars in Hebrew and Greek??? Only Fred Franz knew any Greek, because he took two years of it at the University of Cincinatti. After his second year of college he dropped out. How good could his Greek have been after only two years of it in college? None of the other four men knew any Greek, and none of the five men, inluding Fred Franz, knew any Hebrew. And people are supposed to believe the New World Translation is the best translation? Oh, puh-leeze. Personally, I don't want to touch it with a ten yard pole! And, I'm so mad about all the poor people in the so-called "rank and file" who are misled by the NWT!

How Would You Prove That Abstaining From Blood Is Not Prohibiting Transfusions?
by minimus inlast night my grandson got a blood transfusion.
it occured to me how stupid the belief is that to "abstain from blood" refers to a transfusion.
how would you reason with someone to show that abstaining from blood would not refer to accepting a blood transfusion?.

TD, I appreciated your comments. They make so much sense and are so logical. Twice now I have donated blood, and I feel so good doing it, like I am really doing something to help people. I am not offering my blood for them to eat. Yuck, gross. When I give blood I am assured by the people taking it that all the blood given is thoroughly checked out to make sure that it is safe. The idea that maybe I can help save someone's life with my blood thrills me. Life is sacred, and blood is life, and therefore sacred, so what could be a more beautiful thing to do than to share it with someone so that they can live, so that their life can be saved? I have a cousin who was a "blue baby" when she was born and had to have a complete transfusion to save her. I am so glad she had that transfusion! Nobody 'fed' it to her, so it's not as if she injested it by mouth. Ugh. She was given it intravenously, and it saved her life. It did not go through her digestive system, so she most definitely was not given blood to 'eat'. That is not how blood transfusions work. The reasoning that Jehovah's Witnesses are taught by the WTBTS is so totally illogical and senseless. The so-called 'Governing Body' of Jehovah's Witnesses are personally responsible for the deaths of so many, many people. They do not understand blood transfusions at all - - it is not eating blood! Where are their heads? If only they could successfully be reasoned with! I don't want any of the Jehovah's Witnesses to die needlessly when there is the possibility their lives could be saved by blood transfusions! It is so frustrating!

Witnesses "Policing" People...Is It True?
by CrimsonBleu inmy sister told me once she likes to "police" people, that it was sort of a game she liked to play.
she is true to her word, she does just that.
always seeking the negative, rarely acknowledging positive...anything.. is this common among witnesses?

I have heard this cult being described as a "big brother is watching you" kind of 'religion'. I think it is so true. It's terrible that people in that cult keep an eye out on each other! You'd think they were CIA agents or something. It's awful; it's disgusting. If only innocent people knew what they are getting into in this nasty organization before they get hooked in and conditioned themselves to 'police' others in the cult. Nobody has the right to do that.

JW Defenders- Is WTS Right to Insist You Stay Away From these Websites?
by OnTheWayOut ini read these threads and there are a few that bend over backwards to say why wts is correct on this issue or that issue.. they act like typical jw's that refuse to acknowledge points that may show that wts is not following the scriptures or that wts goes beyond the scriptures in a way that is not supported by others.. the point could be the blood issue or shunning or whether 1799 or 1914 was the start (or finish?
) of the last days or whether there is a faithful and discreet slave class or not.
i don't want to harp on each point.

Spike, I am glad you are posting here, and I hope it is helping you. I know someone whose son has Asperger's Syndrome, although he may have autism, I don't know. So his disorder may be worse than yours. He's very functional, and it sounds as if you are possibly even more functional. It's okay to have disorders and/or mental illnesses. They are not who you are. If Mary's book could help you, I hope you will let her send it to you. You deserve self-respect and your dignity. Hang in there, and please keep posting. Take care. Everyone take care. "Whatever you do, babies, be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
