Neyank, I caught the sarcasm. Just making my point, again, that taking pot-shots at the big, fat backside of the Society is not the same as an attack on it's members. Now that I have finally made an insulting statement, Scooby might actually respond to me. Perhaps he is programmed to ignore pleasantries.

The Plague of Our Era - False Certainty
by jgnat ini found this quote a nice summary of the problem with wt beliefs.. the smart case and religious certainty.
...in some ways, new religious movements are responses to some of the more noxious aspects of modern life.
these sects often seek to compensate for the epidemics of loneliness, environmental degradation and meaninglessness that bedevil so much of our culture.

Gopher, yes, that lovely made-up word menticidal covers it quite nicely. Kindly check your "independent thinking" at the door and leave your brain at home. I also like the WT's very own brain "permafrost" analogy that Blondie so nicely brought up.
SaintSatan, False Certainty would be the best argument for democracy. In a democracy, even a demagogue has opponents that can't be shut up and a limited term of office.

The Smart Case and Religious Certainty
...In some ways, new religious movements are responses to some of the more noxious aspects of modern life. These sects often seek to compensate for the epidemics of loneliness, environmental degradation and meaninglessness that bedevil so much of our culture. In that way, they can be useful safety valves.
But when they get sucked into the plague of our era - false certainty - they become menticidal and leave ruin in their wake. Mitchell's myopic attraction to polygamy - and, worse, his apparent willingness to kidnap children to marry so he could live out his vision - was an example.
So the lesson in the Mitchell affair is the same lesson in any disaster rooted in false and fearful religion: Belief systems that allow no alternative interpretations are almost inevitably calamitous.

*sigh* another JW bites the dust. Truth and Sword are gnashing their teeth, and Stinky and I are bereft of opponents. So sad. And I had come up with such a good topic for the next debate. What do you think of "Is the Pope Really That Bad?"
Hey, Realness! Welcome! A whole new world has opened up, and I hope you hang with us for a while as you discover it.

Another great review, Blondie. I wonder if this is the tone of articles to come, where WTS policy is baldly stated with little explanation or backing. Artful, I am glad you mentioned your post, Should ‘other sheep’ partake? An ‘alien resident’ parallel. It really does make it clear that the WTS has no foundation for a two-tier class system. They made it up.
WT February 15, 2003 "What Does the Lord’s Evening Meal Mean to You?" study for April 6, 2003
If you strongly feel Jehovah’s anointing and have decided for the first time to partake at this year’s Memorial, you are a raving lunatic. This is because the FDS has already prophesied a decline in the anointed year by year, as the day of final judgement inches closer. Based on last year’s numbers, there should be no more than 8,760 anointed left on the planet. If JW’s follow the world mortality rate there should be about 8,681 anointed left, or about 1 in 1,600 people at the Memorial to partake in the Lord’s Evening Meal. Since the average Canadian congregation will only have about 130 people in attendance, we can anticipate that only one person in 11 congregations will partake.
Here are the twelve lunatic reasons that the 8,682nd partaker is mistaken, as listed in paragraphs 12-15. He/she could be;
- presumptuous
- hates planet earth,
- wants anointing just like her friend,
- his anointed friend recruited him,
- hears "voices",
- is clinging to false religious ideas,
- is swayed by wrong views,
- is on medication,
- wants to join her anointed loved ones in Heaven,
- is spiritually ambitious,
- is not humble enough, or is
- puffed up with scriptural knowledge.
The article claims that "So nobody should think that being an anointed Christian gives him wisdom superior to that of those having an earthly hope. Spirit anointing is not indicated by proficiency in answering Scriptural questions, witnessing, or giving Bible talks. Christians with the earthly hope also do well in these respects." It appears the WTS considers Anointed and Other Sheep to be the same except for final destination. Ha! I see I was not the first to notice this little gem! But the promises Jesus gave to his disciples had little to do with location (Earthly or Heavenly).
According to the article, Anointing "depends, not upon the one wishing nor upon the one running, but upon God" (para. 18, quoting Romans). Let’s look at the complete sentence, shall we? This scripture is not about who receives or does not receive Jehovah’s Anointing, but rather, who receives His mercy. If we follow the rest of the chapter, it talks how works (such as prayer, bible reading, meeting attendance, and field service) are futile in obtaining Jehovah’s favour.(Romans 9:31-32) ...so how do we obtain His favour?
that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thine heart that God has raised him from among the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart is believed to righteousness; and with the mouth confession made to salvation. For the scripture says, No one believing on him shall be ashamed. Romans 10: 9-11 Darby
Here is one of my favorite graphs, from www.jwic.com : Total number of memorial partakers (anointed) (shown in pink dots scaled on the left axis) and the number of memorial attendance (shown in blue dots scaled on the right axis). Note virtually unchanged number of memorial partakers (anointed) over the past ten years.

Winter is way too darn long. At least that is my opinion today. It snowed again. Springs are windy, wet, and unpredictable. This time of year, I yearn for green, for any sign of life and growth. Summer days are long and sunny, and it nearly always cools off at night (unlike where JH lives). Fall is beautiful as trees shed their bright coats and batten down for the long winter. I probably like the cool, crisp air of fall the best. Winters are brown or blazingly white. Our winters can get as cold as JH describes. Alberta, Canada here.
