1914 again
by inbetween inthere are a lot of thread s and arguments around the 587/607 issue, it can be a bit confusing, and for those of us still in, like me, to help others, it would not be a topic i would choose first.
it was something i found out, after i awakened, before i simply brushed it aside, as something like worldly chronology against biblical chronology.
imho to be ready for this issue, you have to be awake first, unless you are a real history buff... anyway, there may be another take on this matter:.

TOH - so true, what you say, its really easier to be ignorant.
btw, interesting connection between the poor prophet, and the warning in Galatians 1:8
and then think about the advice: Follow the FDS, no matter what !!!! This makes me really upset....
anyway, back to 1914: Will be interesting , if it still will be highlighted that much, when 100 year anniversary comes, or will it be replaced ? maybe great tribulation already started invisibly ? or something like that ? Time will tell....its only 4 more years to go...

TOH: the example of Balaam is a bit different. Jehovah turned a curse into a blessing, but with your argument, he would just move the curse around to fit his prophecy.
That might be fine but there are a few problems:
1) It would jehovah at least give an important part in one of the worst things that happen to mankind. This does not hamonize with james 1, where is says, nothing bad can come from God .
2) What if Satan says, well I know you are waiting for the big trouble, but I am not going to do anything, so your follower will have no sign for the kingdom being here, nobody will listen to them, and much more people will burn at Harmagedon (thats what he wants right ?) wham, this way Satan can cause a dilemma: Either God has to start the trouble , or the prophecy fails...

lets say, JW are right, the kingdom was erected in heaven in 1914. What was the proof for it ? The only proof, witnesses have, is the composite sign in Matthew 24, Luke 21, Mark 13...the explanation in connection with Revelation 12: Satan was thrown down from heaven, and caused trouble for humans, starting WW1 and all followoing developments, deseases (spanish Flu), etc...
So think about it: The only "proof" besides the wacky chronology, for the last days are signs, which are caused by the devil...hmmm....
So the fulfillment of divine prophecies were depending on Satan. So satan, surely at least as smart as Miller/Russel/ modern JW, must have been able to calculate his time of being thrown out from heaven. Since he didnt want to spoil the game, he just waits until that year, and then goes ahead, since he knows now he has a short time (he didnt realize this 1913 or earlier for some reason, maybe he lost his calendar ?) and he starts WW1 and all the bad things, that signify the last days. He apparently was happy to fulfill exactly the prophecy.
If the big issue is really beween Gods woshipper (JW, or Bibel students at this time) and the Devil, then one could at least expect from the Devil to start the troubles earlier or later than 1914, just to make sure, the prophecy fails...
Actually thinking about it, Revelation 12 refutes the idea of being able to calculate the begin of the Messianic reign, since only when the Devil is thrown out, he knows, he has a short time. This only works, if it really surprised him....
just some ideas.....

I found myself defending Jw's against this unscrupulous Christian!!
by AK - Jeff ini detest the religion of jehovah's witnesses.
deeply.
anyone who has followed my posting here for the past 6 years can attest to that!.

AK jeff: I remember, years ago, I peeked into an apostate book in a library around here, noticed lot of lies and half-truths, it just reinforced my conviction about those who leave the truth, are all like Judas Iscariot...
Many years later, I read some pages of Crisis of Conscience, what a different story...the best way to help those inside (if we eandeavour to do so) is even by pointing out WT qoutes and perhaps facts from "neutral" sources, like Wikipedia. Or simply use logical reasoning.
regarding KH library: Most policies I know of, also in our congo, if you wish to read something there, nobody will bother you, however, if you want to take it hoem, you have to contact the school overseer ( he is responsible for the library). Its just for the purpose of keeping it orderly, no elder will deny the request for studying even older literature.

A rough estimate of how many are still in for family or loved ones?
by dgp ini'm sure it's impossible to know for sure but, in people's opinions, what would be a rough estimate of how many people are still in because of fear of losing loved ones?.

yes, count me too, family and friends, all my social network are JW.
I was a good witness, so i choose my friends only in the org...
However, would not care soo much about friends, but I cant do this to my family, it would most certainly "kill" my mother as well,
So while my conscience bothers me now, for not speaking up, it would bother me more for the damage I would do to my family, its really a loose/loose situation...

About "apostate" websites
by Sojourn injust throwing some thoughts out there, from what i've noticed, and interested to see what you all think: agreeing and opposing opinions are welcomed!.
i feel that the "apostate" sites i've run into have a lot of good information on them that i am thankful to have found.
my eyes would not have been opened without them.

sojourn - I agree, it happend to me some years ago, looking for information, came to this site, and read some headlines, dismissed the whole site as some bitter apostate nonsense,
however, now, I do understand to some degree the anger some people have and the need to express and to vent...

new DVD, all GB members on it
by inbetween inwatched the new dvd last night, and i noticed, that i think all current gb members got a chance to say something on it.. even jaracz was part of it.. somehow it feels, that they try to become more popular lately.. their picture appeared in the book about acts last year, they give talks in big stadions (br.
jackson in vienna and other places), they appear in videos.
it seems like they try to educate the flock about their leaders, since most witnesses dont even know them really.... is this a pr move ?

What is it like to be an elder???
by confliction ini'm not 18 yet, so i've never had the chance to become one (thank god), but what kind of things do you learn as an elder that are... different from being a regular jw or basically someone without "priveleges"?.
.
for example, what stuff do you hear, what books do you get, what kind of things did you see, etc..

"Rich, be glad you are not an elder. Once you become an elder, you can never walk in to the KH and look at people the same way ever. You know who hates who, who has done what to/with whom, you know all the business and gossip of everyone. Ignorance is bliss."
How true this statement is, being an elder actually alienates you from many people. All my close friends are outside of my congo.
From day one of my "privilege", I think there were only a few times, were I thought, I can do something good, mostly its either administartive stuff, or judging of people, based on their field service reports or meeting attendance....thats at least what we do at elder meetings....
Some in the congregation view you as kind of chieftain, others observe you and your family closely, to spot some flaws, and then we have the CO-visits and elder schools, were sometimes you are treated in a very condescending way.
Additionally to elder book, we get letters from the branch, that are only for elders. Often deal with some details on judicial things, for example, how much pornographie, before someone looses privileges or get dfd, how much contact can a serving brother have with dfd relatives, etc...
Most elders I know do not seem to be happy in their "privilege"...

Did you ever go through a period of obsession with all things WT related upon your awakening?
by miseryloveselders inwhen i was a firm believer that the wts was god's chosen organization, i didn't really research too much.
never gave much thought to other opinions.
if the insight book said so, than it was factual.

miseryloveselders - so true, I am often thinking about JW doctrine, checking this site almost daily, but the hardest stuff is sitting during meetings.
At least when I have a part, I try to make it as little cultish as possible, concentrating on the example of jesus and on undeserved kindness, rather than stessing the nearness of the end or the importance of works (do more -songs)
Worst are the mid-week meetings, so incredibly boring, yesterday was even a re-run of KM from last year, it seems they really run out of ideas, its always the same....
